Maybe I Shouldn’t Have Saved That!

Ranked #9,581 in Parenting & Kids, #343,718 overall

We come from a well-blended family which often leads to unique and humorous moments.

First A Brief Family History

About 12 years after my husband and I were married my divorced mother married my widowed father-in-law which instantly made my husband my step-brother, my sister-in-law my step sister and my mother my step-mother-in-law!  I'm not quite my own grandmother - but almost!!!

Setting the Stage

The year of our 25th anniversary, we traveled from Colorado to the Oregon ranch to visit family.  Since our parents lived out in the country, they had a large chest freezer.  Now this freezer was large enough that a 6-foot person could comfortably sleep on the top without feet or head hanging over.  This freezer was HUGE!!!  At this time my mom was barely 5 foot 2 inches and didn't often get to the bottom of this freezer.  Her theory was - a full freezer held in the cold so why empty out anything unless you needed the room for something new!

Because we were visiting lots of family had come to the farm for a reunion.  My sister and her children, my sister-in-law and her family, my husband and children and our parents were all present.

My mother suddenly decided that since it was our 25th anniversary we should have the top of our wedding cake that she had kept in her freezer for just this occasion.  All she had to do was get it out of the freezer and we could all have a piece.

Searching for the Cake

We all gathered in the dining room where the freezer was located and my mom started on her search for the top of our wedding cake.

First, she found the top of my sister's wedding cake - she was married after we were so of course it was closer to the top of the freezer.

Next mom pulled out another cake but wasn't quite sure what it was. When we unwrapped the mystery cake, we discovered it was some of Mom's 25 anniversary cake from her first marriage! Now remember that her new husband and blended family were all gathered around this freezer.

OOPS!

First my mom looked stunned, then she quickly glanced around and realized who all was looking on - for a moment I wondered if she was going to climb into the freezer and just pull the lid down on top of herself - but there wasn't room. Finally she gave a disgusted humph, grabbed the cake out of my hands and took it to the back porch and tossed it out for the sheep and deer to eat!

She eventually recovered and found the top of our wedding cake which quickly became sheep and deer food also.

I often wondered what else lurked in the bottom of that freezer!
