British Cartoonists

There are many British cartoonists, some more famous than others. There are over sixty famous cartoonists from Britain, and many more across the world.

On this page, you will find a list of the most famous British cartoonists and comic book authors. You can find out about them and take the polls to let us know if you've heard about them before.

Comics books were first made in America in 1932, and although they are called "comic books", not all of them are humorous. In fact, the superhero comic books dominate the world of comics books.

Alan Moore

type=textAlan Moore is frequently described as the best comic writer in history.

Born on 18th November 1953, Moore has published many comic books, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell.

Alan Moore began writing in British fanzines in the 1970s, and later earned more popularity by publishing comic strips in magazines.

Alan Moore is also credited for working on the comics books of the well know superheroes Batman and Superman.

Paddy Brennan, James Crighton and Bill Holroyd

type=textPaddy Brennan, James Crighton and Bill Holroyd are the artists of one of Britain's most well loved comic books, The Dandy.

The Dandy was first published in December 1937 and was initially called The Dandy Comic.

The Dandy is, and always has been, published weekly.

The Dandy Annual was first published in 1938 and is a yearly book which is full of Dandy comics.

David Sutherland

type=textDavid Sutherland is a British comic artist who became well known after he designed The Bash Street Kids, Billy the Cat and Dennis the Menace for the Beano comics books.

David Sutherland was born in 1934, and has also designed many other characters for the Beano and the Dandy.

Sutherland has designed many comic and adventure strips, and is in association with DC Thompson and Co.

Mary Tourtel

type=textMary Tourtel (1874-1948) was the creator of the famous and well-loved character, Rupert the Bear.

Mary Tourtel was brought up in an artistic family.

Rupert the Bear was first introduced to the world in 1920 in the English newspaper, The Daily Express. Mary Tourtel had married an editor of the newspaper, Herbert Tourtel.

Rupert the Bear was created because the Daily Express was competing with the Daily Mirror's characters, Teddy Tail and Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Referred to as the Little Lost Bear at first, Rupert was a brown bear until the Daily Express cut inking expenses and made him white instead.

Dudley D. Watkins

Dudley D. Watkins first created the comic, Oor Wullie. Although this is one of the less well known comic books, it is still very much loved.

Oor Wullie originated in Scotland, and means Our Willie in England.

Oor Wullie is published in The Sunday Post and features a boy, William, whose trademarks are spiky hair, dungarees and an upturned bucket which he sits on.

Dudley Watkins has also illustrated some characters in The Dandy and The Beano.

    I used to like the cartoons from the Beano and Dandy comics when I was growing up, and I used to have a really good Rupert annual at one time too. All great cartoonists.
