Life of One of the Foremost Figures in Russian Literature

Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin was a Russian poet, dramatist, novelist. By many he is still considered Russia's greatest poet and the founder of modern Russian literature.

One of the most "literary" homes in Moscow...

One of the most "literary" homes in Moscow was home of Sergey Lvovich Pushkin. Often poets gathered together in this home. In 1798 Sergey Lvovich resigned his commision. He moved from Saint Petersburg to Moscow. Living in Saint Petersburg he married Nadezhda Osipovna Hannibal, the granddaughter of the famous Negro of Peter the Great. Facad of their house in Moscow was garnished with lion's heads, upended torches and stone garlands.
There was something interesting about Pushkin's family. His father was an affable chatterer, but he was useless, empty and idle man. His wife was neither stupid nor ugly, but she had many of peculiarities. She was bad in housekeeping. Her home was always upside down; there was never enough of anything.

The Childhood of Aleksandr...

In that family, on May 26th of 1799, Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin was born. In Pushkin met Great Russian lords and the characters of African saga. He was the last of noble line of the Pushkins. But it was not a special baby. He was a graceless, morose infant. His face was a sallow, soft globe, with thick lips that were too bright a red and glittering, dreaming eyes. His hair, the color of horse chestnuts, grew in tight, curly shavings from brow to nape. The nose, with flaring nostrils, was slightly flattened between well-filled cheeks. Aleksandr never laughed. He never ran. He let his toys drop from his hands. He dragged listlessly from room to room.
This irritated his mother. She did not really like him and always showed much more affection to his older sister Olga, and his younger brother, Lev. In his childhood Aleksandr did not display special talents. He was clumsy, often ill. His mother complained about the way he rubbed his hands together and she punished him by tying his hands behind his back for a whole day. The child more liked to spend time with his grandmother, Maria Alexeyevna, who had come to live with her daughter. He felt himself free from his scolding mother and from the whole world, where was no place for him. Sometimes Aleksandr could spend his time with the old nanny, Arina Rodionovna, she knew so many legends, old songs. Little Pushkin could never tire of listening to her. Aleksandr's nanny was his most generous companion.

First Poem and Beyond...

Many of the famous poets and writers were often coming to Pushkin's house. The eight year old Pushkin was allowed to sit quietly in a corner and listen to conversations of these important  to him people. This experience prepared him for the books of the French eighteenth century he was allowed to devour freely.

Pushkin wrote verse himself when he was eight years old. This included a parody of Voltaire's epic  "Herinade", which told the story of a war dwarves. But his French tutor, M. Rousselot, ridiculed him. Aleksandr was punished for "laziness", and he burned his verse in the stove.

In 1811, when Aleksandr was twelve, his parents decided to send him away to school. He was sent to a lyceum in Tsarskoe Selo near St Petersburg. Aleksandr felt his first real taste of privilege. During the six years in lyceum he did not return home. His parents sometimes visited him at school, usually to scold him for a bad behavior. Whenever Pushkin was telling about his childhood, he always started with the lyceum, as if he did not want to remind himself his earlier memories.

In 1817, Aleksandr graduated from the lyceum. He received the rank of collegiate secretary and an appointment to the Collegium of Foreign Affairs.
