A great lens and collection of the proper quotes so you can properly egghead out at parties.
  • christopherwell Oct 5, 2011 @ 2:10 pm | delete
I love how wide-ranging your list is -- characters from television, film, and print; real-life figures from history, etc. Good lens!
  • stargazer90 Apr 12, 2011 @ 12:51 pm | delete
ha, great lens! I especially liked the Dracula bit a "misquote can sometimes take on a life of its own and continue to haunt the person who never said it, even after death."
  • jgelien Oct 21, 2010 @ 7:14 am | delete
Riveting lens. I enjoyed it very much.

Great lens...5* also congrats on LOTD. I will lensroll it to my "apropos aphorisms" lens...how about "Judy, Judy, Judy" Gary Grant in 40's movie, but he never said that, Tony Curtis imitating him did...uuhhh, does this date me???
  • GonnaFly May 1, 2010 @ 3:03 am | delete
Well there you go... No Beam me up Scotty??? Most interesting.
  • Pastiche Apr 30, 2010 @ 12:30 pm | delete
Fun, fun, fun lens - and I learned about a few misquotes I believed I'd actually heard. Nicely done, and congrats on LOTD.

What a fun list of misquotes! Congrats on your LOTD!
  • bakerwoman Apr 26, 2010 @ 5:46 pm | delete
Now that you have straightened out the misquotes, I will need to think twice and remember the correct quotes or not say them at all. I think the line from Dracula "I want to drink your blood" was often used as a joke or satire but I knew he never said it. SImilarly, a quote like "It's midnight, I need to get a bite" was definitely made up.
Very entertaining lens, fav'ed and lensrolled.
  • modz Apr 26, 2010 @ 2:31 pm | delete

Great lens!! Lots of information. I had heard the one about Captain Kirk, but many of them I had no clue were misquotes. lol!!! Congratulations on your LotD!
  • PeterAlcivar Apr 26, 2010 @ 11:52 am | delete
Great lens overall, but I'm surprised you didn't list "The play's the thing," another quote from Hamlet often taken out of context.
  • Christene Apr 26, 2010 @ 11:52 am | delete
    Blessed by a SquidAngel :)
  • sangeeta Apr 26, 2010 @ 11:40 am | delete
One of the most infotaining lenses ever. Thx
  • prosperity66 Apr 26, 2010 @ 11:38 am | delete
"If they have no bread, let them eat cake!" wasn't indeed said by Marie-Antoinette but by Louis XVth daughter - don't remember which one - who didn't want to hurt people but sincerely thought peasants had cake on their table and shouldn't complain because there was a lack of bread. She was informed that peasants actually didn't even have cake ;)

    Great lens here!
Congratulations on your LOTD, it's well deserved!
    Dom.

    Fun lens! Congrats on LotD!
  • kiwisoutback Apr 8, 2010 @ 1:22 pm | delete
Outstanding lens! I've heard a lot of good things about Ed Wood, by the way. You've set the record straight about alot of these quotes... I have to admit, I thought they were the original quotes, especially that Dracula one.
  • BuckHawk Mar 24, 2010 @ 9:07 am | delete
Great Lens! Just when I needed a pick-me-up, I found this lens. Thanks.
  • garyr_h Mar 11, 2010 @ 7:51 pm | delete
Awesome! It's really funny how these things are handed down. I actually watched Tarzan recently and found it completely weird that he didn't say that.
  • AmitolaZander Feb 13, 2010 @ 1:04 am | delete
Very interesting lens! It was a pleasure to read, brought me back in time.

  • vickis36 Jan 29, 2010 @ 6:15 pm | delete
Thanks for setting us straight,we thought a lot of these were true :-) Great Lens
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Jan 16, 2010 @ 6:59 pm | delete
You blew a hole in a lot of my assumptions. "...let them eat cake!" is a standard. I assumed it was true.
  • HorseAndPony Jan 4, 2010 @ 9:47 am | delete
What a great idea for a lens. I love your Pet Peeves section.

This is a great topic and well researched. It is not something I would ever have thought of and yet it is very interesting. Well done 5* and fave
  • Ramkitten Oct 30, 2009 @ 2:07 am | delete
Captain Kirk NEVER said, "Beam me up, Scotty"? Really??!! Huh. I feel so ... so ... lost. Well, anyhow, what an interesting lens!

  • Margo_Arrowsmith Jun 20, 2009 @ 7:31 am | delete
Great 5 * lens. This is what Squidoo is all about. You did a lot of research and made it entertaining. Good for you I am a fan.

BTW, you could include to quotes attributed to Al Gore. He never said he invented the internet and he never said that Love Story was written about Tipper and him.

I haven't added anything in a long time to Margo' Ultimate Squidoo Library, but this one is going there as I don't want to lose it!

5* for a really good lens.
  • Suzie-Shine Jun 12, 2009 @ 11:08 am | delete
Super fun lens, interesting as to how these wrong quotes come about.

  • California_Dreamin Jun 11, 2009 @ 1:39 am | delete
That's a good one. This is not just a case of a word or two being changed, the whole sense of the quote has been misconstrued. When I hear this one I'm always reminded of Bugs Bunny playing the violin to soothe the Tasmanian Devil and other savage beasts. [in reply to Demaw]
  • Demaw Jun 10, 2009 @ 5:11 pm | delete
How about "music soothes the savage beast" as a misquote of "music has charms to soothe a savage breast " etc. As you pointed out, there are many misquotes out there. 5* lens.
  • FunGifts4All Jun 2, 2009 @ 6:44 pm | delete

  • Jbackus7 May 26, 2009 @ 11:29 am | delete
Not much to say other than WOW!
Some of these misquotes I would have never known were incorrect.
  • Screenwriting4me May 18, 2009 @ 9:55 pm | delete
This killed me. Great lens. All this time I though Dracula did say "I want to drink your blood".
  • 24websurf May 16, 2009 @ 9:36 am | delete
I love this lens. Great info!
  • fanfreluche May 15, 2009 @ 9:56 am | delete
Fun and original lens! Interesting bit on the "beam me up scotty", I didn't even think it could in fact not be a real quote from the serie.
  • RolandTumble May 10, 2009 @ 3:43 pm | delete
    Great lens!

Most people who misuse "I'm opinionated" really aren't misusing it--because they _are_ opinionated, even if it's not what they think they mean....
  • twelfthhouse May 7, 2009 @ 1:03 pm | delete
Wow! Great lens. I really enjoyed it and, oddly, I also first read the title as mosquitos. Hmmm...
  • Susan52 May 4, 2009 @ 11:30 am | delete
Very interesting, enjoyable, lens, nicely done! Interestingly, I first read the title as "Famous Mosquitos" and I couldn't imagine a mosquito being famous, except as the unofficial state bird in several southern states!
  • stargazer00 May 3, 2009 @ 10:51 am | delete
    Very nicely laid out lens.

  • papawu Apr 10, 2009 @ 11:00 am | delete
Just like in Japanese, a simple change in tone and inflection of a word can cause you to misconstrued. Changing an entire word within a sentence can change the entire aspect of the sentence. That's why its best to always listen to what a person is saying. I mean, exsqueeze me would not be the same as excuse me, now would it?.. :)
