Fancy Diapers For All Babies

Fancy diapers are well.... just today's modern cloth diaper - with a VERY nice twist! As a mother who had to deal with leaky cloth diapers, safety pins and rubber pants for her first child and was gradually (over the course of having 5 children), introduced to disposable diapers, I see diapers today that combine the best of both worlds.

Disposable diapers are filling up our landfills at an amazing rate with approximately 3.4 million tons of used diapers added to landfills each year. At this rate, not only will the landfills be much more smelly, they will be full and overflowing in a matter of no time at all!

Can we afford to be doing this to our home?

The Cost Of Fancy Diapers

can you afford NOT to use them?

Fancy diapers (of the cloth type), cost about $6 - $18 each. The average baby will need approximately $600 worth of cloth diapers. However, the same baby in disposable diapers will cost his or her parents an estimated $3000 in diapers. It's also necessary to keep in mind that those same cloth diapers can be used for any brother or sisters that may come along as well - for no additional cost to the parents. However, the disposable diaper family will need to spend another $3000 for each additional child. That's a huge financial difference!

bumGenius Fancy Diapers

and, to me, they ARE fancy diapers!

bumGenius cloth diapers first arrived on the fancy diaper scene in 2006. They "rocked" the market with their one size fits all diaper with stretchy tabs making it extremely adaptable for almost any size baby.

I Love Them. I would have never used disposable one if these fancy diapers had been around back when I was raising my children.

And the COLORS!! Just check out all the colors for just one style!

Pocket Diapers

Pocket Diapers are just what they sound like - diapers with pockets in them for the insertion of the absorbent material of your choice. bumGenius carries an excellent inner liner that is shaped just for their pocket diapers. Or you can separately purchase diaper material to fold and insert - or just get prefolded diapers to use as your "batting". To me, one of the best things about these fancy diapers is that you can add liner stuffing for overnight diapering. THAT'S especially great for toddlers who insist on that extra glass of water (5 times) before they settle down for the night!

Pocket diapers ARE fancy diapers. Look at the fold on the bumGenius Pocket Diaper near the waistline. It's perfect for protecting from "heavy loads".

AIO Fancy Diapers

I had to look that up - it means All In One Diapers

All in one, or AIO, diapers are just that. A Water resistant covering with a permanent, absorbent inner lining. All in one, fancy diapers save time, yes, but a year of washing may make them fade. (The pocket diaper is my personal favorite - can you tell?)

One very nice thing about all in one diapers is that you can put them in your diaper bag, the car glove compartment or even leave a few at Grandma's and with the one-size-fits-all, they are still good to go a year later! bumGenius Organic all-in-one cloth diaper uses a 3x3 snap system - the same as the Pocket Diaper. They are good for babies from 7-35 pounds and I don't see why, if your newborn is a preemie or less than 7 pounds, you couldn't use the newborn liner or the "doubler" liner from the pocket diaper styles.

The Benefits of Cloth Diapers

Less expensive that disposable diapers - as mentioned above, cloth diapers (even fancy cloth diapers) cost about $600 for the first baby in a family, whereas disposable diapers cost about $3000 for EACH baby in a family!

Less harmful to the environment - disposable diapers "eat up" hundreds of thousands of trees every year in their production. In addition, MILLIONS - no BILLIONS of these neatly (sometimes) wrapped bundles of plastic wrapped poop and pee are sitting quietly in our landfills. Not degrading very quickly due to their "nice" plastic packaging - just waiting, for what we are yet to know...

Cloth diapers are better for your baby's skin - they contain none of the potentially harmful chemicals used in the manufacture of disposable diapers.

Fancy Diapers That Are Flushable

Now, there is a brand of cloth diaper that came out in 2007 called the gDiaper. It has a disposable inner lining that is flushable. While these types of diapers may be an option for some, recent reports from plumbers across the country are not very encouraging. I have old plumbing in my house and am not sure if this is the route I would take. However, they are working on any problems so the future may bring good results. Let's keep an eye on them!

One More Fancy Diaper

prefolded diapers

Prefolded diapers are one last solution to the cloth diaper line-up. Prefolded diapers are sometimes called Chinese prefolded diapers are available in either white or unbleached. Now, I'm sure you're asking why I would consider these to be "fancy diapers"? It's relly because of the covers - what used to be called rubber pants or plastic pants. They are just so cute now! And fancy!!

There are literally hundreds of design to be found for prefolded diaper covers. Pictured here are just a few of the fancy diaper covers from babyearth.com
