Once you have chosen your fancy dress costume, the next best bit is to select the accessories. It is so much fun and, if you add some face paint, this will really help you to get into character.

Everyone has their own personal favourite when it comes to a costume and Halloween is the perfect excuse to shed those inhibitions and don all those little extras that enable you to really get into the spirit of the festivities. There are sumptuous extras to choose from so let's take a look at some ideas for the children.

SPOOKY HALLOWEEN CRISPS - You will need a cookie cutter in various spooky Halloween-style shapes, 1 pack of large flour tortillas, some olive oil, salt (optional). Put tortillas on a flat surface and cut out as many shapes as possible. Brush both sides with oil and cook in a preheated oven (gas 4-350F) for approx 2mins each side. Watch carefully so they don't burn. Add touch of salt, sugar or cheese for some extra taste.

SPOOKY SARNIES - Easy-peasy...just make up your children's favourite sandwich and cut out spooky shapes with the cutter.

SPOOKY WITCHES' FINGERS - Mould some dough into long finger shapes, including a knuckle. Almonds make great looking finger nails and you could add green or red food colouring to the dough for effect. For an even spookier look, use food colouring to paint the finger nails. Black would be perfect.
Green and black are perfect colours for Halloween so you could use them to perfection with a little imagination, even in your children's milky drinks. Small chocolate chips and drops make great eyes, too.

BUBBLY HOT WITCHES' CIDER - Start with a gallon of cider, good quality concentrated orange juice (16 ounce), cinnamon stick and a couple of cloves. Just add everything together in a large saucepan and simmer for about 20mins. Transfer to your favourite punch bowl.

FANCY DRESS FOR THE TODDLERS - It doesn't matter what you put your little darlings in as they will receive the inevitable aaaah all night. Cute is strawberry shortcake, baby bee bunting, lady bug tutu, cuddly cub, sugar plum fairy, angel and pretty princess, pumpkin princess and lil mermaid costumes. Cute - but with not so much aaaah - are Batman and Robin, banana baby, buzzy bee, Superman, cute pirate, lily pad frog and lil stinker.

Why not get some face paints, a wig and footwear to really add the finishing touches to your costumes? Getting the correct skin colour is a must, but easy with face paints. Black lips are popular, though, if you want a real splash of colour, then go for very deep red. A must do are the long black fingernails for the girls. Fingerless gloves or the long mesh style are popular, especially if you can find the ones that have the spiders integrated in the pattern. A dab of skin glitter high on the cheekbones adds that touch of sparkle.

WITCHES AND WIZARDS - This theme is great with so many extras available. First you have to have the witch's green skin, making everyone else green with envy wishing they had chosen it. Both the witches' and wizards' hats look super. Depending whether you're doing the Harry Potter-style wizard or the more traditional one will dictate the costume style, just don't forget the striped leggings and pointed slippers for your witch.

Ingredients:

* 200g butter , at room temperature
* 200g golden caster sugar
* 200g self-raising flour
* 4 eggs
* tsp baking powder
* 1 tsp vanilla extract
* 6 tbsp chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

To Decorate: Children will have great fun decorating these at Halloween parties

* 2 packs liquorice Catherine wheels
* 12 tbsp Nutella or other chocolate spread
* liquorice allsorts (the black ones with the white centre)
* tube black writing icing
* 1 length red bootlace

Method

1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4 and line a muffin tin with 12 cases, preferably brown ones. Put the butter, sugar and flour in a mixing bowl. Break the eggs into a smaller bowl, taking care not to get any shell into it, then tip on top of the butter mixture.
2. Add the baking powder and vanilla to the larger bowl, then beat with an electric hand whisk until smooth and creamy. Stir in the chocolate drops or chocolate. Spoon the cake mixture evenly into the cases and bake for 20-25 mins until golden - a cocktail stick pushed into the middle of one of the cakes should come out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
3. To decorate the cakes, unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into lengths with scissors to make dangly legs. Stick 8 into the top of each cake, making small cuts with the tip of a sharp knife so they push in really securely.
4. Spoon the chocolate spread on top and spread lightly within the liquorice legs to make a round spider's body. Now cut the Allsorts to make eyes and the red bootlaces to make mouths, then stick them onto the cakes and dot on the icing to make eyeballs. Will keep for up to 2 days in a cool place.
