Meet Chloe Saunders ...

Back when I first picked up Bitten, book 1 of Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series, little did I know that it would change the way I looked at werewolves and first person narratives. But it did. Imagine my surprise when I started reading The Summoning and found that not only had this new, young adult series been seamlessly integrated into the mythology of the existing series, but it was instantly captivating.

The characters were interesting. The idea was interesting. Every new twist kept me on the edge of my seat.

I finished book 1 and immediately ordered books 2 and 3. While I was waiting (impatiently) for them to arrive, I re-read the first again.

Yes. I did. It was that good. I couldn't get it out of my head.

I still can't.

The Summoning

She sees dead people- and they see her.

The SummoningAfter years of frequent moves following her mother's death, Chloe Saunders's life is finally settling down. She is attending art school, pursuing her dreams of becoming a director, making friends, meeting boys. Her biggest concern is that she's not developing as fast as her friends are. But when puberty does hit, it brings more than hormone surges. Chloe starts seeing ghosts-everywhere, demanding her attention. After she suffers a breakdown, her devoted aunt Lauren gets her into a highly recommended group home.

At first, Lyle House seems a pretty okay place, except for Chloe's small problem of fearing she might be facing a lifetime of mental illness. But as she gradually gets to know the other kids at the home-charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek, obnoxious Tori, and Rae, who has a "thing" for fire-Chloe begins to realize that there is something that binds them all together, and it isn't your usual "problem kid" behaviour. And together they discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home either...

I lifted the match higher. The thing raised its head. A skull stared at me, strips of blackened flesh and dirty encrusted hair hanging from it. Empty eye sockets turned my way. The jaw opened, teeth clacking as it tried to speak, uttering only that horrible, guttural groan.

It took me a while after starting the book to realize that Kelley Armstrong had based it in her Otherworld universe. I was already in serious like with the story and figuring that out just pumped it up to 11. Awesome! Chloe Saunders can see ghosts. Except she doesn't know that. After a screaming fit at her art school gets her sent away to secretive Lyle House, a home for mentally troubled kids, Chloe begins to figure out that the things she sees might not all be in her head.

The Awakening

Her life has changed forever...

The AwakeningIf you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl-someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment-not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control; I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

Now I'm running for my life with three of my supernatural friends-a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch-and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

His snort said the feeling wasn't necessarily mutual. Maybe I should have been a little disappointed, but I was too relieved to care. At this moment, Derek's trademark scowl was better than any smile.

This is billed as a YA book, but it's written so well and it's so engaging that I had a hard time putting it down. Set in the Otherworld universe and picking up directly after the first book, Chloe has to escape the Edison Group and find the other runaways. This happens fairly quickly and the four kids are on the run, trying to either find Simon and Derek's dad or reach someplace where they'll be safe from the people after them. I like that these kids don't have a manual for their powers. It's more than just learning how to control them, they also have to learn their boundaries. Throw in the fact that they've all been genetically altered and it's a whole new ballgame. The rules that apply to normal Supernaturals aren't necessarily the blueprint they're following.

The Reckoning

As far away from normal as it gets.

The ReckoningOnly two weeks ago, life was all too predictable. But that was before I saw my first ghost. Now, along with my supernatural friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, I'm on the run from the Edison Group, which genetically altered us as part of their sinister experiment. We're hiding in a safe house that might not be as safe as it seems. We'll be gone soon anyway, back to rescue those we'd left behind and to take out the Edison Group . . . or so we hope.

I've been WAITING for this book. Like, WHOA! Even with all that buildup it didn't disappoint. Nice. Having found temporary safety with a small contingent of people working against the Edison Group, Chloe and her fellow Supernaturals still have a few things to worry about. For one, their rescuers don't seem to believe that their powers are as strong as they say they are. For another, Derek's werewolf blood puts him in danger from those that think he's too dangerous. Chloe has to use her ability to see the dead to try and sort through all the lies and half-truths they're being told. Overall, it was a downright fun book. I hope we see these guys again (whether in the continuation of this series or popping up in the non-YA Otherworld series) because it still feels like there's more story to tell here.

In case you couldn't tell, I loved the series. Loved it.

The Deleted Scenes

... with spoilers for the series.

Grand prize winner for a contest Kelley Armstrong ran. Very funny, but don't watch it until you've read the entire series.

The Gathering

Book 1 of the Darkness Rising series

The GatheringMaya lives in a small medical-research town on Vancouver Island. How small? You can't find it on the map. It has less than two-hundred people, and her school has only sixty-eight students - for every grade from kindergarten to twelve. Now, strange things are happening in this claustrophobic town, and Maya's determined to get to the bottom of them. First, the captain of the swim team drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. A year later, mountain lions start appearing around Maya's home, and they won't go away. Her best friend, Daniel, starts getting negative vibes from certain people and things. It doesn't help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret - and he's interested in one special part of Maya's anatomy: Her paw-print birthmark.

Have I ever mentioned that I'm a huge Kelley Armstrong fan? Totally true, guys. Totally. When I first heard she was putting out a young adult series I was like .... "But will it be as good as Elena and Clay's shenanigans?" Of course, being a good little fangirl I bought The Darkest Powers series and LOVED IT. Seriously, it blew me away. I was completely enamoured of every part of it. It was disturbing how crazed I got about it. So when this series was announced I honestly didn't think it could live up to Chloe and the gang.

You know what? I was wrong. Kelley Armstrong has managed to take the mythology she established with her Women of the Otherworld series and which she expanded with The Darkest Powers series and give it a whole new spin. I am completely in awe of her writing skills.

Maya is sassy and confident. She's a leader without having a diva ego. She's strong and steady and, yeah, maybe she's a little hard on herself but when it's pointed out to her she takes steps to temper that side of her personality. Daniel is the perfect best friend. He's there when she needs him. He's willing to stand up for her and she's willing to let him. Rafe is a bit of a complication in their relationship. Although I don't necessarily see a romantic bent in Daniel's feelings for Maya, he doesn't want to see her hurt and he does see the very real possibility that Rafe could hurt her with his carelessness.

And the mythology here? I'm in love with it. I would marry it and have its babies if that wasn't weird and creepy. I don't want to say too much because learning the bits and pieces as Maya does draws you in and holds you captive, but I really think it's fantastic how the mythology is growing with every book and series.

Gorgeous writing, gorgeous characters. The only downside to this book is that I have to wait how long for the next installment?!?!

Meeting Kelley Armstrong...

I was incredibly fortunate to get to catch Kelley Armstrong when she swung by the Bay Area for the release of The Gathering. On top of getting that book signed, she quite graciously signed the stack of books I brought in from her Women of the Otherworld series (an adult urban fantasy series that forms the backbone of the mythology in her young adult series).

The book itself is amazing and Kelley is one sweet, fantastic, lovely lady.

The Calling (Darkness rising #2) cover reveal

Scheduled for release in April 2012, the cover for The Calling has been revealed by Kelley Armstrong.

Synopsis
Maya Delaney's paw-print birthmark is the sign of what she truly is-a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly anyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it's only a matter of time before she's able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now, Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home.
