It just might consume you ...
And that, as they say, was the beginning of the end.
I picked up the first book. And devoured it. I rushed out and picked up the 2nd and 3rd books. And devoured them. I bought the first book in the prequel. I started trolling the internet for Mortal Instruments related merchandise.
This was a slippery slope, my friends. A slippery slope, indeed.
A welcome, gritty, supernaturally charged slope that kept me hanging with bated breath.
As I found out, there's no turning back once you've stepped in ...
City of Bones, where the adventure begins...
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
- Jace drew his arm away. A ghoulish freckling of blood marked his face. He still reminded her of a lion, with his wide-spaced, light-colored eyes, and that tawny gold hair. "She can see us, Alec," he said. "She already knows too much."

I have a rule of thumb: If a book or series makes me want to climb inside it and roll around in the dirty streets and barrows (it's urban fantasy, dirty streets are a given) and I'm wondering if I'm going to die if I can't read the next one right away, I count that as a good book.
City of Bones gave me what I was looking for when I picked it up. I wanted adventure and romance and that touch of the mystical that I sometimes crave. I wanted a creepy, gritty landscape overlaid with the interactions between characters that might not be human, exactly, but that behave with distressingly human emotions. I got all that. Plus, some things that weren't even on my list.
The only thing that could have made this better would be to have book 2 already in my hands.
Without giving anything away, my heart broke a little at the revelation toward the end. Broke. I was picking up pieces and shoving them back in my chest. That said, I still hold out hope that the things I long for, the things that this revelation temporarily quashed, will somehow come to pass. I don't know how this will happen. I don't know when, but I believe!
City of Bones is Endlessly Quotable
Part 1: Dark Descent

- It was as if they had sprung into existence between one blink of her eyes and the next. There was the girl in her long white dress, her black hair hanging down her back like damp seaweed. The two boys were with her- the tall one with black hair like hers, and the smaller, fair one, whose hair gleamed like brass in the dim light coming through the windows high above. - pg 10
- The dreams held her, one after the other, a river of images that bore her along like a leaf tossed in a current. She saw her mother lying in a hospital bed, eyes like bruises in her white face. She saw Luke, standing atop a pile of bones. Jace with white feathered wings sprouting out of his back, Isabelle sitting naked with her whip curled around her like a net of gold rings, Simon with crosses burned into the palms of his hands. Angels, falling and burning. Falling out of the sky. - pg 56
- "You're my best friend," Clary said. "I wasn't mad at you."
"Yeah, well, you clearly also couldn't be bothered to call me and tell me you were shacking up with some dyed-blond wanna-be goth you probably met at Pandemonium," Simon pointed out sourly. "After I spent the past three days wondering if you were dead."
"I was not shacking up," Clary said, glad of the darkness as the blood rushed to her face.
"And my hair is naturally blond," said Jace. "Just for the record." - pg 115
City of Bones is Endlessly Quotable
Part 2: Easy is the Descent

- Now Isabelle did turn her eyes on Clary, and they were large and dark and unexpectedly thoughtful. "He's not a liar at all. Not about important things. He'll tell you the horrible truths, but he won't lie." She paused before she added quietly: "That's why it's generally better not to ask him anything unless you know you can stand to hear the answers." - pg 153
- How exhausting, Clary thought, to fight all your life and then be expected to continue that fight even when your life was over. At the edges of her vision she could see the square white vaults rising on either side of her in orderly rows of tombs, each door locked from the outside. She understood now why this was called the Silent City: Its only inhabitants were the mute Brothers and the dead they so zealously guarded. - pg 182
- There was a kinetic, almost feverish energy to him that hadn't been there before. Something about Jace sharpened him, brought him into focus. If she were going to draw them together, she thought, she would make Jace a little blurry, while Alec stood out, all sharp, clear planes and angles. - pg 192
- Jace, on the other hand, looked like the sort of boy who'd come over to your house and burn it down for kicks. "I like the dress," he said, unhitching himself from the wall. His eyes ran up and down her lazily, like the stroking paws of a cat. "It needs a little something extra, though." - pg 213
- "I'm sorry," she said, not sure who she was even speaking to. Out of the corner of her eye she thought she saw Jace shoot her a look of white rage - but when she glanced at him, he looked as he always did: easy, confident, slightly bored.
"In future, Clarissa," he said, "it might be wise to mention that you already have a man in your bed, to avoid such tedious situations."
"You invited him into bed?" Simon demanded, looking shaken.
"Ridiculous, isn't it?" said Jace. "We would never have all fit." - pg 317
City of Ashes, where love is never safe ...
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil -- and also her father. To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings -- and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.
- Alec looked at her and shook his head. "How do you manage never to get mud on you?"
Isabelle shrugged philosophically. "I'm pure at heart. It repels the dirt."
Jace snorted so loudly that she turned on him with a frown. He wiggled his mud-caked fingers at her. His nails were black crescents. "Filthy inside and out."

Oh, man. Where do I start? I love how this series is becoming bigger and more complex. I love how gritty and ragged the world around them is. There's betrayal and murder and fragile alliances. There's forbidden love (like, really forbidden - why am I so enamoured of it?!?) and the love that springs up between siblings and parents even when they're not blood relatives. As adrift as Jace feels that he is in the world suddenly, he has a family that loves him like he's their own. Clary has Luke, the substitute father who loves her unconditionally.
And then there's Valentine. The dark fog that sweeps through and infects everything he touches. Downworlder, human, Nephilim, demon, he subverts them all and uses his gift for twisting the truth to destroy them slowly from the inside.
City of Glass, the epic conclusion ...
To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight. As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost?
Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling trilogy The Mortal Instruments.
- Clary had gone straight to the Institute after she'd talked to Madeleine at the hospital. Jace had been the first one she'd told her mother's secret to, before even Luke. And he'd stood there and stared at her, getting paler and paler as she spoke, as if she weren't so much telling him how she could save her mother as draining the blood out of him with cruel slowness.

Wow. Just, wow. In the end, I got all the things I wanted out of this series. I saw epic love, familial love, betrayal in so many forms, fighting, more betrayal, decapitations, kissing, labyrinthine twists through forgotten tunnels and hidden hillsides, and hideous experiments. We learned that truth and lies can be easily wound together and that it's often a thin line that separates the two.
Despite being so phenomenally fantastic at everything, Jace is flawed. He fights hard, he loves hard and he uses his way of life to battle through his demons. Figuratively speaking. Literally, too, I guess. His ties to Valentine run deep and being strong enough to see through blind love takes courage. For the record, Jace will probably go down as one of my all time favorite guys. He's just ... whoa.
In case you couldn't figure it out, I pretty much loved this entire series. I'm excited beyond belief that we're getting another 3 books with these characters and I will be one of the first in line to get my hands on them when they come out.

- She touched his face with her fingertips, delicately running them over the planes of his cheekbones, down to the curve of his mouth. Jace never said things like that to anyone else but her. Alec and Isabelle knew, from living with him and loving him, that underneath the protective armor of humor and pretended arrogance, the ragged shards of memory and childhood still tore at him. But she was the only one he said the words out loud to. She shook her head; her hair fell forward across her forehead, and she pushed it away impatiently. "I wish I could say things the way you do," she said. "Everything you say, the words you choose, they're so perfect. You always find the right quote, or the right thing to say to make me believe you love me. If I can't convince you that I'll never leave you--"

A few reviews ago I mentioned that I rarely read other reviews before writing up my own because I don't want to get caught up in the things that other people liked or disliked about a book before getting my thoughts down. That said, the wild swings between "loved it" and "hated it" for this book caught my attention. So I read a few reviews. (Y'all were supposed to stop me from doing this, remember?!?!) It's funny to me that a lot of the reasons people fell into the hated it camp were the very reasons I loved it.
One of the points made was that City of Glass tied up the Mortal Instruments storyline and Cassandra Clare should have left everyone with their happily ever after. Another story wasn't needed.
My response: This arc directly builds on Clary's actions at the end of CoG. It isn't a brand new "let's see what shenanigans these Shadowhunters can get into now!" storyline but rather an organic continuation of the first cycle. One that addresses the idea that even well-meant actions have consequences. Jace is dealing with the fallout of what he experienced. The Lightwoods are dealing with the death of Max. Simon is dealing with the Mark that Clary gave him. Clary is getting her life back into a normal groove but she still feels lingering guilt over giving Simon his Mark and a vague hope that her gift for Rune-Writing has gone away for good. Add to that the realization that her wish to bring Jace back to life has opened a doorway to allow Very Bad Thing to happen and you realize that everything isn't rainbows and puppies.
Honestly, I thought all the characters benefited from the events in this book. It wasn't nice, it wasn't bloodless, but it made them grow. I liked seeing Alec more confident in his own skin. I liked seeing Alec and Magnus together. I liked that Isabelle is coming to grips with the reason that she goes through boys like socks. I liked all the little things that made these characters come alive and gave them depth even beyond what the first series gave them.
The other issue I saw popping up that seemed to drive people batty was that there were a lot of threads left dangling plot-wise. Well, duh. It's the first book in a story arc that will span 3 books. If everything was tied up here why would we bother with the next two books? Personally, I loved that the end of the book had this big, horrible happening that seems so catastrophic I can't see how Cassandra Clare is going to solve it. I LOVE IT WHEN BOOKS SURPRISE ME!
I have faith that the story will play out the way it needs to. I have faith in Cassandra Clare's vision for her characters. I nearly keeled over with the revelation at the end of City of Bones but everything worked out in the end and the characters I adored ended up in the place they needed to be. Why wouldn't I believe that this is going to happen this time?
The bottom line is that I loved jumping back into Jace and Clary's world. I loved spending time with them. I loved seeing that winning the war didn't solve everyone's problems. I'm in it to the end, guys. Through every battle, be it physical, emotional or moral. And, yes, I'm dying to see how things play out. I wish it was 2012 already just for that.

Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. Okay. Where do I start? How about: I liked the book. A lot. I loved the dim, sooty feel of the London streets. I loved seeing how things that Jace and the Shadowhunters in The Mortal Instruments series use are being thought up and invented here. I liked seeing how Charlotte, as a woman in Victorian England, is struggling to assert herself as she runs the Institute.
I adored Will. I have no idea what his issues are (although I could hazard a guess. I'd probably be wrong, but I could still guess) but the face he presents to those around him hides something deep. I like Jem and his struggle. I liked the juxtaposition of Tessa as a proper Victorian girl who is seeing that being proper might get her killed. She's strong and brave and loyal to a fault. And she's somehow different from any of the Downworlders we've seen before.
As with The Mortal Instruments, family becomes central to the development of the characters. Tessa crosses an ocean to find her brother. Charlotte accepts everybody into her makeshift family- Jessamine, Will, Jem, and those humans with the sight- and does her best to make the Institute more than just a place that they're living at. She tries to make it a home and a haven for those within its walls. Will has serious family issues that have only been hinted at. Jem's entire existence is tied to the horror he and his family experienced.
How long before book 2 comes out?!?!
Clockwork Prince
The Infernal Devices Book 2
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street-and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends. With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move-and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will-the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
