Lets face it - travellers keep teir valuables in ther fanny packs - and thieves know it.
It is more sensible to have an extra lightweight cloth bag on a string hanging around your neck with your passport and travellers cheques in it .
If there are two of you travelling together split your currency between you and also your vital medicines.
It can be very difficult to get prescription drugs in Foreign countries urgently.
Rome is a particular problem with Small children being run as thieves (like Fagin !) - I had two lots try to steal from my bumbag - they hold a piece of paper or newspaper in front of your face to distract you while one of them rifles your fanny pack. - I realised what was happening and pretended to smack the eldest one and they all ran away the danger with that is that the thugs who run these kids may have knives and atack you !) This happens in all major Italian cities in touristy areas.
I solved the problem by putting a cheap padlock on my fanny pack.

A Warning though about Photographic Logos on Fanny Packs - it's an invitation to be robbed in the seedier parts of town - Thieves know only too well the logos for Nikon and Hasselblad - and the fact that there are goodies inside.

Paint your ideas on your waistpack.
You'll need ACRYLIC paints and a fine brush and I'd advise drawing your design or picture on a piece of paper first.
Or put your name with beautiful embellished letters (from a design book or in your favourite style - mine is in Celtic Letters from the Book of Kells) Acrylic paints dry quickly and adhere well to most fabrics or leather. Although it will be touch dry in about 5 minutes, I'd leave it for an hour before using the bag.
