Fantastic Mr. Fox: The Story

Mr. Fox steals chickens, ducks and turkeys from three wealthy but ruthless farmers named Boggis, Bunce and Bean. He must do this to feed his family. Sick and tired of Mr. Fox, the farmers start looking for a way to kill him. One night, they wait outside his hole, thinking they can finally ambush him. When Mr. Fox goes out, they fire at him but only succeed in blowing off his tail.

Determined to catch him, the farmers dig their way into the foxes' home by using spades and shovels. However, Mr. and Mrs. Fox, as well as their four children, dig a tunnel deeper into the ground and escape. The farmers even use bulldozers to dig deeper, but to no avail. Consequently, the three mean farmers decide to keep watch on the entrance to the tunnel with their guns at the ready while their men patrol the area to make sure Mr. Fox and his family do not escape.

After three days without food, Mr. Fox comes up with a bright idea to escape. He and his family dig further on and end up in Boggis's number one chicken house. They steal a few chickens and run away without leaving any trace. What's more, they raid Bunce's storehouse of ducks, geese and vegetables as well as Bean's underground apple cider cellar.

On their way, they come across Badger and other animals, who are also starving because of the farmers' hillside siege. Feeling concerned and responsible, Mr. Fox invites the other animals to a feast. They decide to establish a safe underground town and continue to discreetly obtain food from the farmers.

Meanwhile, Boggis, Bunce and Bean keep guard on the tunnel entrance in the rain. They have no idea that Mr. Fox and his friends are stealing their food right under their noses. The book ends with the indication that the three bad farmers will be waiting forever, without fulfilling their sinister plan.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Is Up To Something!

About the Making of Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a 2009 stop-motion animated film based on Roald Dahl's well-known book of the same name. It was produced by Regency Enterprises and Indian Paintbrush, and premiered on October 14, 2009 at the London Film Festival. It went on general UK release on October 23, 2009, distributed by 20th Century Fox, and it was limited released in the US on November 13, 2009. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, and Bill Murray, it is the first animated film directed by Wes Anderson, and 20th Century Fox's first stop-motion animated film. About the making of Fantastic Mr. Fox, the director says, "We went out in a forest, went in an attic, and went in a stable. We went underground for some things. There was a great spontaneity in the recordings because of that. We wanted to use real trees and real sand, but it's all miniature."

Roahl Dahl: The Amazing Life of the Author of The Fantastic Mr. Fox

From Wikipedia:

Roald Dahl (13 September 1916 - 23 November 1990) was a British-Norwegian novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. Born in Llandaff, Wales, to Norwegian parents, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, in which he became a flying ace and intelligence agent. He rose to prominence in the 1940s with works for both children and adults, and became one of the world's bestselling authors. His short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their unsentimental, often very dark humor. Some of his better-known works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Matilda, The Witches, and The BFG.

Not surprisingly, a major part of Dahl's literary influences stemmed from his childhood. In his younger days, he was an avid reader, especially awed by fantastic tales of heroism and triumph. Amongst his favorite authors were Rudyard Kipling, William Thackeray, Frederick Marryat and Charles Dickens and their works went on to make a lasting mark on his life and writing. Dahl was also a huge fan of ghost stories and claimed that Trolls by Jonas Lie was one of the finest ghost stories ever written. While he was still a youngster, his mother, Sofie Dahl, would relate traditional Norwegian myths and legends from her native homeland to Dahl and his sisters. Dahl always maintained that his mother and her stories had a strong influence on his writing. In one interview he mentioned, "She was a great teller of tales. Her memory was prodigious and nothing that ever happened to her in her life was forgotten." When Dahl started writing and publishing his famous books for children, he created a grandmother character in The Witches and later admitted that she was based directly on his own mother as a tribute.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Original Soundtrack and Audio Books

Fantastic Mr. Fox (Original Soundtrack)

From The Philadelphia Inquirer, written by Steven Rea, October 25, 2009:

Sounding Fantastic. If the trailers for Wes Anderson's stop-motion-animation adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's book Fantastic Mr. Fox aren't enough to suggest great stuff ahead (the film opens Nov. 20), the sound track should clinch the deal. An integral component of the writer/director's movies thus far (think John Lennon's "Oh Yoko!" in Rushmore, Nick Drake's "Fly" in The Royal Tenenbaums), the collection of songs and tunes for Fantastic Mr. Fox includes such furry numbers as "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from the Wellingtons, two from the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man," and a handful of Burl Ives incantations - yes, Burl Ives! - guaranteed to spark a Burl revival. Throw in some Art Tatum, Jarvis Cocker, and Bobby Fuller Four, plus beautiful instrumental sketches from French composer Alexandre Desplat, and you have one of the loveliest, most eccentric sound tracks to come along since - well, since Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited.

The Roald Dahl Audio CD Collection: Charlie, James/Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Enormous Crocodile, Magic Finger

A customer who bought this CD collection wrote:

I ordered this CD set for my grandchildren to listen to. It rotates from house to house by the week. On busy nights, when Mom and Dad don't have time to read, this satisfies their desire for a bedtime story, plus it lasts longer than a short story or two. They sometimes drift off to sleep listening to the CDs. With 11 grandchildren, this comes in handy. I'm very glad I bought this set and am so impressed that it is read by the author.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Is a Foodie Movie. It Makes You Hungry!

Fantastic Mr. Fox Apple Pie Recipe

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a movie that really makes you hungry. Food is central to the story. Especially the three sinister farmers keep enjoying fabulous food, which Mr. fox wants to taste, too. The movie has many scenes depicting fabulous feasts, during which the characters enjoy fish soup, chicken dishes, pate-filled doughnuts, apple and blueberry pies, apple cider, and apple gingers snaps. In short, it gives you ideas about planning your Thanksgiving feast menu! Here's an apple pie recipe you can try:

2 cups flour
1 cup shortening
1tbs. vinegar
1/8 tsp. salt
4 - 6 tbs. water
4 - 6 large red delicious apples
1/4 cup of sugar
2 tbsp. flour
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1tbs. lemon juice
1/4 cup of sugar
½ tbs of cinnamon

Combine salt and flour. Mix them very well. Cut shortening into the flour-and-salt mixture with a fork or a pastry cutter. Add vinegar and a tablespoon of water until you have a soft but firm pie dough. The piecrust should be soft and slightly damp.

Cut the apples into thin slices after peeling and coring them. Sprinkle the apple slices with lemon juice. Mix all the dry ingredients together. After that, mix the apples to the dry ingredients. Combine cinnamon and sugar together in a small separate bowl.

Pinch pie dough in half. Roll out each half to fit an 8-inch or 9-inch pie plate on a floured hard surface. Place one piecrust into the bottom of the plate. Make sure the bottom lays flat to the surface of the pie plate. Pour the apple pie filling into piecrust. Place the top piecrust onto the pie plate and filling. Crimp the edges together with your fingers. Cut vent slits into the top of the apple pie crust. Sprinkle apple pie with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Cover the edge of the apple pie with foil for the first 25 to 30 minutes to keep the edge of the pie from burning.
