Wedding Favors - How Did It All Get Started?
In many societies the marriage of a man and woman was considered good luck, and that everything they touched would be blessed. By giving small gifts to their wedding guests, those same blessings would be passed on.
Many brides chose to share this good luck by preparing a small gift of almonds, beautifully wrapped in a box or elegant fabric. The gift of five almonds was said to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness.
In the thirteenth century the practice of coating almonds in sugar became popular, and were called "confetti". Over time, confetti has transformed into Jordan almonds, now one of the most common and traditional wedding favors. The combination of almonds and candy signify the bitter sweetness of married life.
