Fantasy Origami

The Benefits and Difficulities

Fantasy Origami models are generally accepted to be models in the intermediate and advanced levels. There is a certain amount of detail required to perfectly shape that phoenix' head or to get that unicorn's tail right.

That's why I won't be providing a lot of folding steps in this article. Instead, we'll be looking at what others do ;-)

Welcome to the Dark Side

Fantastic Creatures

Different kinds of fantasy creatures have spoken to the imagination of many people. Children, grown-ups, eldery people, we all share a wild interest in everything 'magical', or 'otherworldly'. The featured artists below have captured this imagination with paper and created some truly astonishing paper sculptures.

A Majestic Phoenix

A Unicorn, Perfectly Folded

A Dragon

Paper Dinosaurs

The Paper Castle

Although it's not so easy to defend it, this must be one of the most amazing pieces of paper art ever created. Imagine the dedication and patience these people had when creating this. There are no words to describe the awesomeness of this paper sculpture.

Fantasy in Pieces

In modular Origami, there are a lot of possibilities to create some extraordinary models. Modular origami allows us to be more precise, create bigger and better models and it's actually a sturdy thing you are designing.

Take a look at some of the pictures.

Modular Dragon

A Dragon Boat

My very own Dragon

I have tried to create a simple modular dragon, but as you can see in the picture, it turned out to be more like a walking snake with wings. Perhaps you can do better? If you are interested in creating this dragon, I can assure you that it is very easy, but it requires some time and patience. Follow the steps below to get started!

The Module

The start of your own dragon ...

Warning! You will need liquid glue to make the dragon model, preferably a glue gun.

Step One

You will need a standard A4 sheet of copy paper. Something slightly thicker could also work. Fold the paper in half, in the length, open it up and tear or cut it in two. You will have two pieces of paper as shown in the picture. Do this again for both pieces. You now have 4. Repeat. You now have 16. Repeat. You now have 32 pieces of paper.

Step Two

32 pieces of paper from one A4 sheet. The pieces are as shown in the picture. You need one hundred of these pieces. (!) I'll just wait right here until you finish....

Step Three

All done? Here's how to make one piece. Fold the paper in half.

Step Four

Fold in half again.

Step Five

Unfold your last fold. Wait! Did you remember to crease your folds well?

Step Six

Make sure that the open part of your model is facing downwards. Take the upper left ledge of the paper and fold it alongside the centre crease. Crease well.

Step Seven

Do the same on the other side. As you can see, we are clearly going for a triangular shape here.

Step Eight

Flip your model over.

Step Nine

This is a detail of what you have to do next. The small pieces of paper that are sticking 'out' of the model, need to be folded up. However, we go for a triangle, so first we need to fold a small triangle of both corners upwards. Only fold untill you reach the ledge of your model.

Step Ten

This is how it should look like by now.

Step Eleven

Now, fold the 'sticking-out' pieces of paper upwards along the bottom ledge of your model.

Step Twelve

Fold in half and you got one unit! 99 more to go!

How to make the rest...

Almost all of my art involves paper of some kind, and origami is one of my favorite art forms. Beautiful lens, and a great source of information on how to make a paper dragon.
