What to name my fantasy team?

Your entire fantasy season depends on this crucial decision. It determines whether you will be feared, respected or laughed at by other players. Don't screw it up.

Seriously, it's not that big of a deal. This guide offers ideas to help you pick a great name for your fantasy team or league. Many of the examples are from fantasy football but these ideas can be used to name teams in fantasy baseball, hockey, basketball, soccer or any fantasy sport...even fantasy golf.

What makes a good team name?

Team names can instill fear in your opponents, make them laugh or just ask "what is this dude on?".

A team name should sound good when used in smack talk.

Examples:
1. "You don't have a prayer against team name."
2. "team name is going to dominate this league."

Remember, it's your team so have fun naming it. The name doesn't even have to make sense and you can always change it later. Some people change their team name every week to trash talk their opponent.

Real Sports Teams

Lots of people name their fantasy team after their favorite pro or college team. It's quick, easy and you show support for your team.

If you want to be more creative, change the name up a little with similar words. For example, there's a guy in one of my leagues who is a Detroit Lions fan so he names his fantasy team "Motorcity Maulers".

You can also name it after your favorite team's fans like "Raider Nation" or a team slogan like "Fear The Turtle".

Songs & Bands

Use the title or a lyric from a favorite song. Country songs can make good team names because they usually have funny titles. Any song titles by Weird Al Yankovic are also good candidates.

Some example ideas:

Sports Phrases & Quotes

Athletes and coaches frequently mouth off with memorable quotes. Use one as your team name.

Examples:
"Just give me the damn ball"
"He hate me"
"They are who we thought they were"

Movies & TV Shows

The title of your favorite movie/TV show or a great quote from it can make a good team or league name.

Here are a few movie title ideas:

Current Events and Slang

Make up a name based on anything that's happening in the sport or other news. One year I named my fantasy NASCAR team "Jet Fuel Additives Anonymous" based on the fuel additive scandal at the start of the 2007 season.

Past favorites for fantasy football teams were names like "Vick's Dog Sitting Service" or "Favre's Flip Floppers". Last year saw lots of teams with "Winning" or "Tiger Blood" in their names. Check out Charlie Sheen's Twitter feed...it's full of funny team name ideas.

Slang words or phrases are good, too. "Pimp My Team" for example.

Your Own Name or Nickname

Hey, it's your team, put your name on it. A popular idea is to find something that starts with the same letter as your name. You could also use your pet's name.

Examples:
"Frank's Fury"
"Craig's Crew"
"Matt's Masters of Mayhem"
"Rover's Racetrack Raiders"

Where Are You From?

Use your nationality or location

Americans aren't fans of getting beat at our own game by someone who shouldn't know anything about football, basketball or baseball. So if you're from another country, make sure to remind us with your team name. Something like "British Bulldogs", "Kiwis" or "Scottish Soccer Hooligans" should do the trick.

You can also use your city, street or neighborhood in your team same. Some examples include "Pine Street Punks", "Boston Bruisers" or "South Street Crew".

Girl Team Names

Any of the above ideas will work for a girl's team. But if you really want to have fun, pick something that reminds the guys they are getting whooped by a girl

Kira suggested "Victorious Secret" in the comments below, that's a great chick team name!

Other Examples:
"Girl Power"
"End Zone Divas"
Anything with the word "pink"

Work and Occupation Related Names

A lot of fantasy leagues are started by people at the same job. Make up a name based on your company, job field or something funny that happened at work.

I've searched the web for lists of good fantasy team names. I discovered there's a lot of junk and not much good stuff. Here is the best of what I've found so far.

Junkyard Jake's Team Name Generator: This is cool. The site will generate a random name and logo for you. Expect names like the Astonishing Touchdown Hags, Disturbed GameDay Psychos and Loony TrashTalk'n Chicks.
FantasyTeamNames.net: A new site where you can submit and vote for your favorite fantasy team names. You'll find some good ones like Tomorrow Never Addais and Bill Belichick's Video Rentals.
Action Art Banner's Team Names: A sports banner company that built a list of team names from the banners they've created.
TeamNames.net: A list of team names that you can rate. Also has a random team name generator.
