Fargo - Not Just a Movie

Thanks to the Coen brothers, most people imagine Fargo, North Dakota as a hick town in the middle of nowhere, covered in snow and filled with crazy people. That's only partly accurate.

In reality, Fargo has been enjoying a booming rebirth over the past ten years. Even in the midst of the housing crisis and threatening recession, construction and business growth continue at a record pace. The downtown Renaissance Zone has revitalized and revamped an area all but abandoned, with new restaurants, coffee shops, condominiums, radio stations, and boutiques opening regularly.

This lens will be a part of a series of lenses focusing on various Fargo topics. Eventually, you'll find a lens on the annual blues festival, the summer performing arts groups, and what goes on in the dead of winter to keep everyone from moving to New Mexico. For now, please explore this lens and share any questions you may have in the guestbook.

Find Activities, Shops, and Fun in Fargo

Fargo is located on the border between North Dakota and Minnesota, along the banks of the Red River of the North, the only river in the world, besides the Nile, to flow north instead of south. The town straddles the intersection of two major freeways: the east-west Interstate 94 and north-south I-29.

Because I'm just starting this series, I've mostly got a pile of ideas and a hundred directions in which I want to go. In the short run, I offer these articles about the top ten things to visit in Fargo and the local employment market. (and if you don't believe me, you can watch CNN Money's video about Fargo being recession-proof.) You can also read the December 5, 2008 New York Times article about North Dakota's budget surplus and resistance to the national recession.

Here are some of the topics, attractions, and events I plan to cover.
Air Museum
FargoDome
Fargo Theater (pictured above)
Blues Festival
Film Festival
It's a College Town - Local Post-Secondary Education
Surrounding Area - Where Is Fargo?
The Heritage Hjemkomst Center, just across the river in Moorhead, Minnesota
Downtown Rebirth - Eating, Shopping, and Living (and a guide map to downtown)
Children's Museum at Yunker Farm
Plains Art Museum
Rheault Farm and Other Parks
Racing at the Horse Park
The West Acres Shopping Center (also knows as "The Mall")
Growth and Which Direction It's Taking

If that's not enough to hold you, you can always visit the site of the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors' Bureau. If you've got any other ideas or topics that need covering in Fargo, please drop a note below or contact me. I intend this to be a long-term project and I'm open to suggestions.

I'd like to thank "malepheasant" for making the above image available. It's a partial view of downtown from the Island Park parking ramp on Main Avenue. The photo below here shows the new pocket park on Northern Pacific Avenue, with the NDSU Architecture and the NP Railroad buildings in the background and is copyrighted to yours truly.
