Homemade Felt Boards and Giveaways
Looking for a unique giveaway for infant or toddler storytime? At my library, we make the Flannel Board Story Boxes once per year as giveaways for storytimes for infants and toddlers. We include a few simple felt pieces and rhymes for families to use at home. I made the other felt and flannel board kits to show parents and childcare providers what they can easily make at home with scraps of material.
(I've made several hundred flannel board story boxes for storytimes and childcare clock hours throughout the years. Once you get into a groove, they take an average of 2-3 minutes each to make NOT including cutting out the felt story pieces. They can easily be made while on desk during slow times.)

- We don't take registration for storytime as we have a large children's programming room. The largest (in the building) storytimes I've ever had were about 160 people, but I've done a few mini storytimes outside the building that were somewhat larger.

- Do you use flannel boards for each of these stories? What age group do you have attend your stories? What made you choose each of these stories?

- Personally, I rarely use flannel boards as I specialize in 3-5 year old storytime and only 3 of my storytimes per month are small enough to use them efficiently. I've personally performed all but 2 of the above stories for children ages 2-6 and have seen the other two performed. All but "Wolf's Coming" and "Do Like a Duck Does" can be acted out with 1-2 people and/or puppets. I chose these particular stories because they're my favorites I've used throughout the years that have worked well multiple times. I hope to update the lens soon with additional farm animal favorites... such as Cowlick by Ditchfield.

- Do you include an easy craft with your storytimes? Maybe you have some suggestions for that.

- At the library where I work, we only do crafts in 2 evening storytimes per month where numbers are more manageable for crafts. Our weekday preschool storytimes have anywhere from 45-120 people per session (times 3 sessions). However we do have a Discovery Time (ages 0-4) once per month with different stations set up to learn a specific skill or concept which usually includes a craft. I don't think I've ever used a farm themed craft in DT, though.
