A little girl, a father, horses, and a plow...the smell of fresh dirt, the sweat of horses and man, long rows of farrows, warm dirt squishing between little toes, the wind moving slightly, the sun shining brightly...all told the story that it was corn planting time on the farm! -Linda Kysar

Berry Buying Tips

- When buying berries, shop with your nose. Always pick the plumpest and most fragrant berries. They should be firm, bright, and fresh looking with no mold or bruises. If possible, buy locally grown berries. They're likely to be sweeter and juicier than those that are bred for shipment.
- Select berries that are in dry, unstained containers. (Stained containers may indicate over soft berries that are not freshly picked.) Mold on berries spreads quickly. Never leave a moldy berry next to a good one.
- Do not wash or hull berries until you're ready to use them, and refrigerate unwashed berries as soon as possible.
- Store them in a colander in the refrigerator. This allows the cold air to circulate around them.
- Tip: Remove berries from refrigerator one to two hours before serving. Berries are at their fullest flavor at room temperature.

Yacolt Cookbook Author Updates Country Recipes
By Brenda Blevins McCorkle"If Fran Gillette's cookbooks could talk, they'd do nothing but extoll the virtues of hearty, American fare. And each page would then shout: "Eat me!"
That's what the newest edition to the Yacolt woman's recipe collections is all about. The book, called "The Old Farmhouse Kitchen," was recently released in both hardbound and paperback form.
Each page bursts with color photos -- which fill the pages to the edges -- taken by Gillette's granddaughter, Gabrielle Massie of Yacolt. The book is almost impossible to put down once you pick it up.
A word of advice: Don't read it hungry."

Wow, that strawberry shortcake pic is exactly the way I remember my grandmother serving it when I was a kid. I'll be making that tonight. On her homestead she also had great herbs that she grew on the back porch. I found some great tips on Fresh Cooking with Herbsat this site.
