About Farthing Books

The South London Independent bookshop

Farthing Books bookshop

Farthing Books opened in December 2010. Founded by Annette O'Flynn, who used to run The Works at Redhill, it has been a welcome addition to the Coulsdon high street area.

It offers a wide range of books for all audiences, covering not just adult literature, but also children's books, puzzles, and more. For those looking for more eclectic reading, local authors are also well represented, with everything from histories of the local area to thrillers. Most of its standard stock includes remainders and other bargain titles, for readers looking for a discount.

Farthing Books - Toys are to play with!More than just a bookshop, Farthing Books is actively trying to encourage literacy and the social side of books. As well as offering a range of reading material, from puzzles and popup books to thrillers and reference material, the shop also acts as the hub for a children's reading club.

Poetry Competition This competition is aimed at local writers under 16. These run monthly, so contact the shop for information on entering and the latest competition.

Summer StorytimesThe shop also hosts storytimes for children up to the age of 8. Two more are planned this year, on the first Wednesday of each month, offering reading, singing and music, and hosted by Mark Leach:

  • November 2nd
  • December 7th

Cost is £1 per child, and tickets are available from the shop or by phone. Start time is 11:30 am.

Local History - and Local Authors!

Farthing Books in and around the area

Local HistoryFarthing Books offers a range of local interest titles, some hard to obtain. With Janes across the road, Cane Hill Hospital nearby and Kenley airfield on the hill, the area offers a lot of local history. Many of these titles can be found here, including Pam Buttry's excellent history of Cane Hill Hospital.

They also stock titles in all genres from a range of local authors, and hosted talks and signings.

police are finding out - and if he can't find
the truth he'll be going back to jail for life.

Pam Buttrey's talks on Cane Hill Hospital

Cane Hill Hospital by Local Historian and author

Cane Hill Hospital, the Tower on the HillPam Buttrey, a local historian and author of several books, including "Cane Hill Hospital: The Tower on the Hill", has given two talks on the history of Cane Hill Hospital.

Cane Hill Hospital was a psychiatric asylum, built in 1882 and finally closed in 2008. Named the "Third Surrey County Lunatic Asylum" when it opened, it was meant to hold 2,000 patients. A popular site for explorers after it closed, it has now been demolished following a series of fires. As a local historian, and part of the team who closed Cane Hill Hospital, Pam Buttrey is uniquely qualified to discuss its history.

The first talk on May 17th, drew more attendees than expected, and the shop was packed for the talk and presentation, which included a chance to discuss the hospital with the author. Another talk was held on 27th September 2011, focusing on the people and patients at Cane Hill, which was also well attended.

While "Cane Hill Hospital: The Tower on the Hill" is currently difficult to find online, Farthing Books can source this hard-to-obtain title. Please contact the shop for details.

Knowing how people are getting more and more used to just sitting in front of their computers, it's really pleasant to know there are still the good old book shops!
