Fascinator - hat or hair accessory?
Ranked #151 in Fashion & Beauty, #2,693 overall
What is a Fascinator?
A Fascinator is a fashionable hair accessory worn on the head. It may resemble a small hat but is held in place by a band, clip, pin or comb. Fascinators are usually worn by women, along with formal attire. Fascinators may be made from a variety of materials including sinamay, feathers, grosgrain, swarovski crystals, satin, silk, and tulle.
When to wear a Fascinator
Fascinator as alternative to hat or tiara

A Fascinator can be worn to weddings, christenings, a day at the races, cocktail and garden parties. Brides may prefer a veiled Fascinator to a tiara, and the bridesmaids and other members of the wedding party may like to wear matching or complimentary wedding Fascinators too.
Fascinator Materials
What is used to make a Fascinator?

Fascinators can be made from various materials, such as Sinamay, Jinsin, Paris Cloth and Crinoline. Ribbons of Petersham and Grosgrain line head fittings. Paste and real jewels, false and even real flowers may be used to make Fascinators. Swarovski Crystal fascinators make good impressions, as do elaborate feather fascinators.

Unique Fascinators
Why not make a Fascinator for Yourself?

Manufactured Fascinators vary from expensive versions with precious stones to much less costly and simple styles. For a truly unique look, making your own Cocktail or Wedding Fascinator is an obvious choice, and very much easier than making a hat - If you can sew buttons you can make a Fascinator.
The materials you need will vary according to the design you wish to make, but as a rule, the basic materials are:
Scissors
Dressmakers Pins
Thimble
Sewing needles
Small Pliers
Millinery Wire
Tape Measure
Sewing Thread
Mirror (to check the effect!)
Sinamay
Feathers
Elastic
Hair Combs
Bases

- I AM fascinated! I actually made one of these a few months back and wore it proudly until I crushed it in my luggage. Forgot all about the endeavor of curling feathers with an old, blunt, dangerous knife! Thank you for reminding me to dig out my feathers and reacquaint myself with fascination. :) Now I have some new inspiration, too.

- Wow, I didn't know these were a specific kind of headwear - I thought it was just putting some net or feathers in your hair lol. I think I might use one for a Christmas party! :)

- As you can see from my avatar, I love hats (and fascinators, too). I do wear hats but haven't tried fascinators yet. I did buy the materials to make a fascinator during the time of THE wedding, but haven't yet attempted to make one. I should get busy, huh?
