Fashion Magazines Subscriptions - Fashion! The beautiful gowns and hip outfits that keep on changing...

Keeping up with the world of fashion, models and couturiers of the world is easy with these great fashion magazines.

Vanity Fair Magazine

Nobody knows more about star power than VANITY FAIR, where you get access to people, personalities and power like no other magazine. From unmasking Deep Throat to intimate interviews with Jennifer Aniston, Martha Stewart and Lindsay Lohan, VANITY FAIR scooped the competition and gave its readers the must-read exclusives everyone has been talking about. Your subscription includes must-see special issues like the Hollywood issue and the Music issue, and monthly coverage of the movers and shakers in entertainment, media, politics, business and the arts.

Vanity Fair (2-year)

Amazon Price: $25.00 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $108.00

Vanity Fair has undergone a major transformation in the last several years from magazine geared towards women to a monthly that appeals to a much broader audience. The writing has gotten consistently better as well, though the occasional article will be little more than fluff. Photography is always lush, with the art world's top talent contributing beautiful done shots of major stars. Issues like Young Hollywood, or New Music Stars are fantastic, and every issue is something fresh and interesting.

In any given month we get a star showcase on the cover. Recent months have seen Lindsay Lohan, Sandra Bullock, and Hilary Swank. Interviews with these stars are fascinating because they invariably reveal more than they expect to. A recent interview with Sheryl Crow revealed the best of Vanity Fair, an intelligent, emotional, and honest interview that reveals a lot about Sheryl. The acccompanying photography is simply gorgeous. Every month has a rambling diary from the frequently tiresome Dominic Dunne (yes Dom, we get it, you know everyone.), a hard hitting political piece, and a expose on the past of politics, hollywood, or society. The articles are mostly great stuff, but with some clunkers in every issue. Every time I receive an issue, I know there will be articles that will fascinate me. Friends use to claim that Vanity Fair was a girl's magazine. Well, its not just for women anymore. -- A. G. Corwin (St. Louis, MO)

InStyle (2-year)

Amazon Price: $44.88 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $103.74

Hello, first off, I'm a dad and I got this magazine to add to other subscriptions for my daughter as she went from the tweens to the teens to help introduce her to styles and products in the marketplace.

Oddly enough, I have benefited a lot being able to recommend many of the products advertised therein to her (we used a Neutrogena face wash this week that actually worked!) and to have some idea what to purchase as gifts for other family members, etcetera.

As clothes and cosmetics become more and more expensive it helps to be able to make an informed decision the first time you buy and I enjoy giving many of the products as gifts for birthdays, Christmas, and surprises.

The magazine portrays some glitz but really appears to be excellent in its articles, advice, and the products it advertises (editor: cigarette ads are the exception).

Having run the gauntlet of women's and girls magazines and read all of them that my daughter subscribed to growing up for content and to discuss ideas with her, I recommend this for women and teens.

Be sure to order from Amazon, as I had major problems trying to give a gift subscription from InStyle's website as their site placed the order when I did NOT complete the order process and billed my friend instead of me and instead of being a surprise it was a month of wasted time back and forth with e-mails cancelling subscriptions and all the while they stated that I should notify so-and-so if I was displeased, but so-and-so NEVER got back to me, what a total mess! -- Computerboy (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

Vogue Magazine

Vogue is the fashion authority. Setting the standard for over 100 years has made Vogue the best selling fashion magazine in the world. Each issue delivers the latest in beauty, style, health, fitness and celebrities and your subscription will include the must-have Spring and Fall Fashion editions. Before it's in fashion, it's in Vogue!

Vogue (2-year)

Amazon Price: $29.95 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $95.76

Oh, I love Vogue and its flashy, flaunting of fashion, its articles lauding vacuous socialites, "it-girl" actresses and the occasional over-40 writer/power moguls, and pages of outerspace-priced clothing on willowy martian-looking mannekins (who we all know now on a first name basis). Really, I love it! Okay, well, it is a bit in love with itself and its authority on fashion, but really ladies, fashion won't save the world, no matter how many charity balls you cover. It's hard to get as worked up over a (last season) pair of ostrich shoes or clutch purse, and enter a mosh pit at some Barney's outlet sale at your "insider's" behest. It really could whip some impressionable young people into a froth of rampant materialism! Makes one wonder if those bound-in purfume samples are starting to smell like "advertorial!"

Vogue does have its merits, including great photography, the occasional thought-provoking article by a guest writer, and bits on designers lurking on !the fringes of affordability(Catherine Malandrino, Earl Jeans, etc). Still, it's a fun bit of eye-candy and fantasy/vicarious luxury living each month. Yes, I do have a subscription, but I read it with a boulder of salt lodged firmly in my cheek. -- G. Angell (Seattle, WA United States)

Marie Claire Magazine

Marie Claire offers solutions for the woman whose time constraints demand one resource to respond to diverse aspects of her life. From global and cultural issues to fashion and beauty coverage, Marie Claire is for the woman of substance with an eye for style.

Marie Claire (2-year)

Amazon Price: $15.00 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $84.00

The new editor of Marie Claire changed things to make my favorite women's magazine more like Cosmopolitan than I'd like . . . but it's still not quite THAT bad. If you're going to indulge in any women's magazine, this is the one to choose.

This magazine touts itself as a publication for "women of the world" and I have to say, it does a pretty decent job of earning that label. Marie Claire is the first place I read about the Taliban (years ago ... long before Bush and Co. exploited the Afghan women to propagandize their aggression in Central Asia), and about genital mutilation, sex slavery, and other issues that have since become very important causes in my life. The articles aren't as in-depth and well-balanced as they would be in other, more scholarly sources, but they're enough to pique the interest of any would-be activist. Unlike it's trashy cousin Cosmo, Marie Claire avoids articles about how to achieve the 15 minute orgasm or how to drive your man wild, but instead features articles about real women of all ages, shapes and sizes. When was the last time you saw a size 22 woman in Cosmopolitan, let alone one wearing a bathing suit and talking about how she'd learned to love her body? I just read that in Marie Claire last month! Also, Marie Claire tends to put more "real" women on the cover--Camryn Manheim and Susan Sarandon, for example.

In all honestly, I don't like the new editor as much as I liked the last one, but Marie Claire still takes the high road more often then not. This magazine is always a much-welcomed break from my law books and study groups--and sometimes I don't even feel guilty! -- SEP "sepowe" (Texas)

GQ Magazine

GQ (2-year)

Amazon Price: $20.00 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $95.76

GQ presents a difficult paradox of a magazine. There are many reasons to dislike GQ: Its pretentiousness, the focus on unobtainable clothing, the holier-than-thou writing.

But, there are so many positives about GQ that a subscription is not only recommended, it is almost required. First, and perhaps foremost, Alan Richman's food/restaurant columns. Second, Peter Bart (the once-deposed editor of Variety) writes a great Hollywood column. Third, GQ is far and away superior to its rivals, which I believe are Esquire and, somewhat surprisingly, Vanity Fair.

Fourth, the fashion features and celebrity interviews are beyond compare. Finally, GQ generally has one article a month that I would describe as investigative journalism, and these articles can't be missed. All in all, GQ is an essential for any magazine rack. -- D "sub" (Metro Detroit, MI USA)

When you don't work in a big city, you can get a little out of touch with style, and this magazines shows you how to keep in style for a budget. Excellent. -- Ellen b (Long Island United States)

CosmoGIRL! Magazine

Cosmo Girl!, is a magazine for teen girls providing inside information on beauty, fashion, and celebrities, while encouraging them to believe in themselves.

CosmoGIRL! (2-year)

Amazon Price: $14.00 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $59.80

I think I like this teen magazine the best of all the teen magazines. It wasn't trashy and focused a lot on clothes and fashion. Which I love. It also had other things typical of teen magazines but it is a lot classier in its function. I think this magazine also delves into your inner-self and not so much about how you look (fat, skinny, curvy) but that you can look great no matter what your body shape is long as you love yourself. I think this magazine is worth subscribing to. -- cassidrm

Harper's Bazaar Magazine

Harper's BAZAAR, the fashion authority, brings you the latest new looks from the hottest designers. You'll get 12 beautiful issues a year full of best dressed secrets, must-haves and great finds. Experience the best in style and beauty with Harper's BAZAAR.

Harper's Bazaar (2-year)

Amazon Price: $15.00 (as of 10/10/2008)
List Price: $84.00

The most consistently elegant mainstream fashion mag in the U.S. is Harper's Bazaar. You need only check out the recent covers in black and white, featuring Charlize Theron and Demi Moore, to see why this mouthwatering magazine is the high water mark for the best of the best of what's on offer at the supermarket check out stands stateside.

In a market crowded with magazines which look increasingly the same and seem to recycle the identical set of celebrity photos over and over again (snooze), Bazaar has cast an eye on the illustrious typography and design sense of its own past years. The results are evident on every glossy page, with very little of the guilty aftertaste here that you'll surely feel after flipping through the advertising book that is any issue of its bloated, mainstream market competitors.

Are the clothes ridiculously expensive for all but the richest among us? Of course. Do we really care about who showed up at what swanky party in NYC? Probably not. Will we ever look like any of those models? Darlin', you jest! But we do care (admit it) about the fantasy, the luxe, the allure of beautiful clothes on beautiful people -- they're lovely to behold, it's only natural, and it's fun -- you could do a lot worse than dropping a few bucks on this class act and its peer in the "shelter" magazines group, House and Garden. Another magazine not overstuffed with ads and perfumes and heavy on design sophistication, also highly recommended.

I'm sure she's a perfectly lovely person, but I have to say that the recent spread featuring the Duchess of Cornwall (that'd be Prince Chuck's new wife, Camilla) sitting at her vanity with an iPod in her ear was somewhat less than captivating ... unless you count all of the delicious little Corgis showing off at her feet (and I do) ... I don't understand how this got in, but sometimes these things are random, and she is after all the royal consort. Ho hum. Just a blip on the Bazaar radar.

Excepting things like that, way to go, Bazaar! Show them how it's done! -- Laurie A.E. (MA, USA)
