A short term condition that can occur from over exposure to the sun is photokeratitis. This condition can result in temporary loss of vision and is extremely painful. Photokeratitis most often is the result of outdoor recreation on water or snow where the suns rays are compounded by reflecting off of the surface, causing your cornia to become sunburnt. High quality sunglasses will prevent photokeratitis.
Finally, an often overlooked benefit to wearing sunglasses is protection from the wind and all of the particles that it carries. While wind does not cause any long term damage, it can cause your eyes to become dry. This dryness can result in ichy, burning, watery eyes.
