Fashion faux-pas for men. Avoid these traps and attract women!

For men, fashion is meant to attract. Yet, fashion sometimes turns on its head and manages to do the opposite. It is in these situations that you should resolve to pull yourself under the blanket and never get out of bed. Don't fall into such circumstances. Instead of giving you to-do recipes, we've compiled the following not-to-do commandments. Don't just learn them, memorize them and repeat them every day of the year!

Men's Fashion Faux Pas

  • Mayfair look - in a few words, if you aren't going to a summer fair, or aren't the performing clown in a children's show, it would be wise to keep from wearing 5 different colours that represent the sun, moon, stars, trees and the sea. Make your choice of colour judiciously go for smooth combinations or for stunning contrast within 2-3 colours. Remember, also blend in with your surroundings. For conformist office environments, shades of white or grey exude ultimate class and for the more relaxed environment, sky blue or light shades of red. Stick to "complementary colors" (i.e. purple and yellow, orange and blue) or 'analogous colors' (i.e. orange, yellow-orange and yellow). Also, if you have a good collection of shoes, it is pale clothes with pale shoes and dark with dark.
  • Better not spoken of - do not wear clothes with STAINS in them. For emergencies, Mr Stain Stick is always there for you!
  • What??? It's cold outside! - Please, I repeat Please do not wear shorts or Hawaii shorts on a winter's day or a woolen coat on a summer's day.
  • Embroidered quilt look - do not wear quilts if you wish to be fashionable, excessive patterns are abhorrent under all circumstances! Find a pattern you look good in and stick to it (e.g., check or herringbone).
  • Fabri-'queued ' look - do not wear an extravagant range of fabrics, i.e. wool, cotton, silk, denim, corduroy, etc! Fabrics exist in a certain 'class'. Leather jackets do not find any affinity with corduroy pants and silk is considered more formal than denim. Keep your winter and summer wardrobes reasonably separate and you should be fine!
  • Exposure of the lower body - The exposure of your lower body has to be optimal. Just as much as shorts in winter are to be avoided as an effective fashion statement, too long or too short pant lengths are to be avoided. Khakis and dress pants should end at the top your shoe's heels and jeans can be worn to the bottom of the heel. Pants should hide socks when you walk and not reveal more than an inch when you sit.
  • Wrinkles - Wrinkled clothes need to be ironed out! A scrappy way to iron is to spray water and heat with a hair dryer and hands.
  • Tuck 'em in - The rule of formal attire is the tucked in collared shirt with a khaki. Do not bend it and operate within it!
  • Low and high rise - Do not wear pants that sit too high or too low. Depending on whether you are short- or tall-waisted, wear low- or high-rise jeans and khakis/corduroy pants with front or side pockets.
  • Low and high tee-shirts - Do not wear T-shirts that are too tall or too shirt. T-shirts should not extend more than midway down your fly. And do not tuck in your T-shirt and match it with high-rise jeans!
  • Fcuk - Fashion is a statement of class, and such tasteful anagrams do not always achieve that purpose! Make T-shirts in solid colours or two colours stick to you and you'll also have more mix-and-matching options with jackets, cardigans and button-downs this way.
  • Hanging ties - Ties should extend to the top of the belt buckle and have a dimple in the centre of the knot.

many thanks, a really useful hub. I'm just changing my lime-green trousers at the moment, maybe also spap my flourescent pink shirt, thanks to your fashion advice. (that was kiddin).
Do you like the fashion of Serge Lutens?
He is my personal favourite when it comes to fashion. It's a shame that his ideas are not the conventional dressing rules in this day and age!
Once again, a really good hub,
    Will
