How to Stay Fit at 50

Ranked #27,121 in Healthy Living, #378,425 overall

Will you be FAST@50

Reaching 50 is an achievement many of us take for granted. As we go through life we give ourselves goals and objectives to reach and aspire to, and as I approached my 50th birthday I like many people I am sure, I looked back at my life and pondered. What have I achieved? What have I done? Will I have much longer left, to do all the things I have not yet done, will I reach my Eighties or Nineties or will I be one of those guys whose time runs out in my mid to late Seventies?

Could this be a midlife crisis?

Midlife crisis, what does it actually mean? Why I am I telling you this? Questions, Questions, Questions. At 50 I find myself constantly asking questions?

Is it that 50 is the time in your life when you finally see the direction your life is going, is it that 50 is the time in your life when you realise that you still have enough time left on life's clock to make the most of it. Wasn't I supposed to do all this when I reached 40, (what happened)?

The idea for FAST@50 was born

It's all about being fit and still training at 50

It's a common fact that as we get older our health often starts to deteriorate, things in general start slowing down, when I look around me I see other people in their 50's and 60's totally (knackered), they seem to accept that it comes with age. While on the other hand I also see many other people who are in fact totally the opposite, they are active lively and taking life for everything it has got. The big difference is they are FAST@50. They are simply Fit and Still Training, they haven't made the excuse that often comes with age, (I'm to old for all that exercise stuff).Find out more by visiting www.fastat50.com

Running for Charity

The FAST@50 Challenge

My official finish time for the GNR 2hr 09 min

Running for a charity is without doubt one of the most satisfying things you will ever do. And I am sure that those who have already done so will totally agree. It is also a great motivator, many people join a gym or exercise class and give up after just a few weeks, but people who decide to run for charity often tend to rise to the challenge, although they are the ones taking part and suffering the pain, deep in their hearts they know they are also doing it for others. Once you start you will enjoy the reward both mentally and physically. So why not join me and become FAST@50 and run for your favourite charity.

Take up the challenge you don't have to run a Marathon, start with just one mile if you have to, but a Marathon or Half Marathon is a great challenge to undertake as it requires dedication planning and discipline.

Once you are committed to raising money you will feel that obligation to continue, if you are the type of person who joins a gym and finds it hard to stay motivated, then running for charity will give you more purpose.

What's the importance of staying healthy at 50?

Why should you bother to exercise?

EDITORS NOTE:
I am sure I don't have to remind all of you why you should take up a more active attitude as you approach your 50's. However statistics show activity levels decline steadily with age, and by our mid-50s few people take regular exercise, men perfer to show off their belly size, than exercise and often seem quite proud of it. But why is that? It's even more important as you age because regular exercise has beneficial effects on conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and helps you maintain mobility and mental well-being not to mention, your independence. So come on guys, get off your backside and take some positive action.

Fat men

Some of the health benefits you'll get are the same as the younger generation, but there are things that are of particular benefit as you get older: For example you will have more energy - exercise makes you feel more energetic, while sitting around not doing much makes you feel sluggish and unable to do anything.

You will also improved your sleep - your body and mind feel as though they've done something and are ready for rest at night. Your weight will be more stable - regular exercise helps to keep you at a healthy weight. You will have improved circulation and lower blood pressure. You could even delay the ageing process - keeping active strengthens your muscles, joints and bones as well as helping with mobility and balance, this is important as it helps to prevent falls, which are the leading cause of injury and death for the over-75s. So don't sit around waiting. Remember that in addition to these health benefits, exercise can be an excellent way to meet new people, whether it's at a gym, or running club, or just people you meet while out running, it will do you more good than sat at your computer or watching TV.
