Even web experts sometimes overlook this simple step when building a web page. But you can fix it quickly.

You might never notice these parts of a website, but the search engines do...

How often do you look at that blue bar at the top of your screen? Probably not very often - but guess what? Search engines look at it all the time!

Many websites - even sites created by so-called experts - have nothing there but the web address or the name of the business. What a waste!

Each and every page on your site should have a title tag - and that title tag should contain your most important keywords. You can get up to about 65 spaces up there, and they should be not be wasted.

Unless you believe people are searching for you by name only - rather than by the goods or services you offer - that title shouldn't even include your name.

Think hard about this before you title your pages, because the title needs to make sense to anyone who might read it while also incorporating your keywords.

Notice I said pages - each page should have a different title, and that title should be related to the content on that page - not just to the site in general. If you mention macaroni in the title bar, be sure you mention macaroni in the copy - preferably in the first sentence or two.

It is simply amazing to see how many sites fail to take this simple step. But I can't say much, because every now and then I forget to do it when I create a new page... then find it and feel silly for the oversight.

Now ... if you've got your pages titled, take a little extra time and add some site optimization features to your images.

Create an alt tag for every image on your site - a tag that contains your keywords. This is useful for the search engines, and for humans, if they can't download your photos. If you have a lot of extra time on your hands, rename those photos as well. Just remember there are two steps involved - renaming the photos AND changing the "img src" tags in your source copy.

One more thing...

Before you leave your site, re-check your web copy to make sure your keywords appear in the first paragraph of copy on each page as well as inside your H1 tags. AND - be sure it all makes sense to humans as well as search engines!

If you don't see your keywords where they belong - re-write the copy! If you can't figure out how to do that, call me. I'd enjoy turning your copy upside down to make it right-side-up.

Web copy - with search engine optimization - is not mysterious. In fact, it's pretty straight forward. You just need to organize your thoughts, consider why customers benefit by coming to you, and then present the information in an easily understood manner, while implementing a few solid SEO techniques.
