The short answer: Obedience to God

The long answer: In an attempt to use the talents and training God had given me in journalism, I began writing Bible columns sharing what he taught me. It was my goal to help spare people grief by sharing the painful lessons I learned the hard way. It was my hope some folks who might be making the same mistakes, or who might be inclined to make the same mistakes, would realize their errors and choose to change. I learned the hard way wrong choices lead to trouble, so I believe right choices can reduce the troubles. I hope this Christian book spares many needless grief.

Sure, we will have challenges, we will have losses, and life won't be just the way we'd like it. God is in control and he's looking to mold us, shape our characters. His ways are different than ours -- so they're likely to clash at some point. But by learning the truth from the word of God we can help ourselves. The sooner we get the lesson, the sooner we can move on, instead of reliving the pain until we get it right. God wants to free us from the traps the devil has for us. He teaches us that truth that sets us free in the word of God. I share some of those truths here in an abbreviated form, at God's request. I believe they are best suited for those who are eager to know more about God, but maybe don't know quite where to start. It is especially suited for the young, newly surrendered-to-God Christian, newly Baptized, or individual challenged by life's problems who is open to seeking God. It is suited for those open to God but who don't like to read or believe they are too busy for Bible study.

I am believing it is a tool God can use to reach those who don't reach for the Bible, for whatever reason. It is a tool God can use to teach someone important truths quickly when it would save them from much pain, or free them to serve him more quickly.

Christianity. This book is unashamedly about Jesus Christ, the word of God. It is not about any specific denomination, or even non-denomination.

Unfortunately, religion can distract us from what is really important: Knowing God. We get sidetracked. We get into arguments about who is right and who is wrong. What is truth and what isn't. What rules we should be following.

This Christian book attempts to circumvent the arguments and focus on the one who is all important: God. He's also the one who is all knowing. It is God who knows where you're at and where he wants you to be.

Frankly, it's not my objective to convince you to practice any certain religion. As a consequence,Fast Track to Victory, A Christian Guidebook, does not address religious doctrines -- even those mentioned in the Bible, like Baptism. Instead, Fast Track to Victory focuses on practical tools to help Christians of any faith background -- like how to forgive and love, how to deal with fear, and how to deal with the reality of death.

The Bible quotes in the book are from King James. That's where I am at. That's the Bible edition which inspired the lessons. It also happens to be in the public domain, which relieves me of any red tape securing permissions to use Bible quotes from any other edition. You are free to look up the cites in your own preferred version and compare them, if you wish.

I believe in Jesus, the son of God and word of God, and regularly attend a Bible-believing non-denominational church. However, I was raised in a large denominational church and attended it for many years. I also have visited churches in different denominations in my own search for God.

What is important is knowing our Savior, Jesus Christ -- having a relationship with him. Fast Track to Victory, A Christian Guidebook is about what I have learned from God and about God.

Attending church is important, but God has a plan for each one of us. It's not up to me to interfere with the plan he's set in motion for you. What church you attend is a choice you make. Hopefully it is one you pray and seek God about.

Great! Fast Track to Victory, A Christian Guidebook is aimed at folks who don't like to read -- especially for folks who have trouble reading Scriptures! Maybe they fall asleep. Maybe they find it hard to sit still that long!

It's also aimed at those who are too young to have extensive training in the word of God, or who are new Christians still trying to develop the daily habit of spending time with God. It's aimed at those with a busy lifestyle, who can't seem to make time for regular Bible study.

Fast Track is intended to help you and encourage you as you begin seeking God daily. It's a skinny book, less than 100 pages, chock full of biblical wisdom. It's not supposed to be read like any other book. It is a devotions book. As such, it should be read one lesson at a time for 40 days. That means you likely will spend a few minutes reading, a few more minutes praying, and maybe a few more reflecting on the lesson and how you can apply it to your life. You may want to pull out your Bible and read the quotes in context. Hopefully you will!

Don't expect to sit down and read through the book in one, or even two sessions. You'll probably find it too intense. You likely will get much more if you pray, reflect, and try to apply each lesson to your life as you go along. You'll likely get much more if you ask God what he is trying to teach you with each one -- if you ask him if there is anything he wants you to do differently.

So if you don't like to read, and that is the reason you don't like to read the Bible, you've got help. God, and Fast Track, meet you where you are at. Fast Track helps you to relate Bible wisdom to your life, quickly and easily.

This lesson, about how God miraculously healed me from Environmental Illness, is intended to bolster your faith, encourage you to seek the one who made you, and put him first in your life. It is the second lesson in Fast Track to Victory.

I have a confession.

I used to have doubts about God's existence. I would pray and I wouldn't always get an answer, so it felt like a one-sided conversation.

Then one day when I was very, very sick and out of options, I surrendered my life to God. I didn't know what else to do.

Guess what? HE heard me.

It was late 1996 and I was suffering from severe immune dysfunction. Basically, I was super sensitive to everything in my environment and I was getting worse.
I had already prayed. I had already seen the doctors. I took their pills. I took their allergy shots. I took out my mercury fillings. I did deep-heat detoxification in a sauna. I tried to avoid my stressors.

And still, I got worse.

At first, it was better and worse. Then, it was much, much worse. So much so, I didn't know where I could live.

Now that seemed like a problem of God-size proportions. I told him I had done all I could. If he could do something with my life, he could have it.

Well, that's not much of a salvation prayer, but God seemed satisfied with it. He got me a new place to stay within a few hours. He filled me with faith in him and a desire to be obedient to his wishes. (I previously had relied pretty much on my own judgment.)

For two weeks, he tested me. I rotated sleeping places at his discretion -- kind of like the Israelites following the cloud in their wanderings.

"And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys:
"But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up." Exodus 40:36, 37

And then, my mother sought prayer for me from Messianic Vision's radio show by Sid Roth, a Georgia pastor. They drew my name by lottery on the show and prayed for me.
I didn't even know my mom had put my name in for prayer, but I sure knew someone prayed for me. I became more optimistic and resolved to make the most of my situation.

The folks on the show declared me healed. Indeed, as I later learned, I had received the Holy Spirit. My body became stronger and stronger as each day passed.

"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you." Romans 8:11

Well, it was (and is) true.

The Holy Spirit led me to seek prayer wherever and whenever I could. I had people lay hands on me and pray, just as they describe in the Bible.

About six months later, God led me to a statewide charismatic prayer conference. It was there I received a physical healing from Environmental Illness.

My life has never been the same since.

I found being the boss isn't what it's cracked up to be. I just don't have all the answers, as much as I'd like to ... It's sure been a weight off my shoulders.

I have to admit that, deep inside, I was running scared. It wasn't a good feeling.

Now, I can rely on the one who made me to do what's best.

"In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid of what man can do unto me.
"Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
"For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt thou not deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?" Psalm 56:11-13

Cheryl Rogers is a former newspaper reporter who came to know God through a devastating illness. When she surrendered her life to God, he healed her.

Her story is one of hope and encouragement for all who struggle with problems too large for them - whether it be a disease, an addiction, or misery.
