Juicing Your Way To Better Health

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a documentary by Joe Cross. For nearly 9 years he has suffered from an autoimmune disease and decided that he was tired of living this way. He was almost 40, 310 pounds, and taking all sorts of pills.

He challenged himself to do a 60 day juice fast while traveling the States. In this documentary he takes you from New York to California in his car - 3,000 miles - juicing along the way.

You will meet the people Joe met along the way and see how his simple faith in the body's ability to heal itself can transform anyone willing to give it a go.

My Thoughts

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

photograph by Daniel MarracinoMy thoughts on the documentary film by Joe Cross "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead".

This film was recommended to me via an online support group for a 28 Day transition to raw challenge I am currently undergoing. Now, I did this same challenge earlier this year in May-June and although I stuck with the program for the first 3 weeks, by the end of the 3rd week I was back to my old habits.

This time around was going to be different. I engaged with the people in the challenge via my blog as well as the forums. It was on the forums and via a fellow members blog that I found out about "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". At first I thought it was nice how she found something to inspire her and left it at that. I found more people talking about this film and yes, my curiosity was killing me so I went to Netflix streaming to watch it.

I am not disappointed. Both of the feature characters, Joe and Phil, went through dramatic changes both outside and inside. It was definitely an inspiring film and if it gets more Americans to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables I will tell as many people as will hear.

Phil The Trucker Joins the Challenge

An inspiring human to behold

Phil the Trucker photograph by Daniel MarracinoAs Joe Cross was traveling across the states he met Phil at a truck stop. It was a meeting written in the stars as Phil also suffers from the exact autoimmune disease that Joe suffers from. [a rarity indeed] Joe shares a glass of green juice with Phil and offers him help to reboot his health.

Just as Joe completes his 60 day fast and returns to Australia we are introduced to Phil as he calls Joe in a desperate attempt to heal himself.

Joe travels back to the states and gets Phil set up on a 10 Day juice fast.

You will fall in love with Phil as he is such a kind soul. He starts out at over 400 pounds, depressed, in pain, and like Joe, taking lots of pills. He was fed up with the way he was treating his body and sought out help which Joe was more than willing to give.

Phil is set up in a hotel and given a juicer and for 10 days he takes in nothing but fresh fruits and vegetables. He feels so good after the 10 days that he challenges himself to go another 30 days.

I am diabetic and really want to do this so bad. I need to lose 100 pounds, which will lower my blood sugar levels, able to handle life better. I do not own a juicer, but do have a Healthmaster. It leaves pulp in but juices everything, so I am going to try it for 4 days to start!

Frankster says:

Yes, I am starting today. I may not do a lot of juicing but I will definitely cut out the sugars and add more fruits and vegies to my diet. Thanks for the inspiration.

Buy a Breville Juicer

One Powerful Juicer

Joe uses a Breville Juicer in the movie by hooking it up to a generator while he travels 3,000 miles across the United States. You see him often in the back of his car juicing his next meal. Traveling didn't stop Joe-goes to show you that when you are determined to do something YOU will find a way.

This is a 600-Watt juicer that states it is one of the easiest juicers to clean after. Most people who juice know that the most difficult part is the clean up. All those parts?

It has a wide mouth, can take whole tomatoes and whole apples. It makes 1-quart of juice in less than minute. Reminds me of one of those branch shredders - add your kale, carrots, apples, coconut and other whole foods and out on the other end is clean juice. There is a separate container for the pulp. Don't throw the pulp away though either use it in raw food recipes or add it to your compost pile.

The amount of fruits and vegetables you have to intake would have you chewing all day long - adding them into a juicer makes it so you get all the goodness but in a glass of juice.
