men being released from prison

ex prisoners in society

I have been working with some prison inmates to make some legal reform. I got started because of a cousin that got involved with drugs. I have found out that all inmates are not killers and rapists. They also are not uneducated, toothless oafs. Many of the ones I have come to know are from good homes, well educated and intelligent. I found that 66% of the men in prison are there directly or indirectly because of drugs. For example, some were arrested for stealing, but they were stealing to support their drug habit. It appears most of the prisons are just human warehouses where the men are kept until their time is up. Very little education and training to prepare them for life in a productive society goes on there. We have all heard how men go to prison and learn how to become real criminals. That may be because they have too much time on their hands. Now, do not misunderstand me, I am not one of those bleeding heart liberals that believes in a slap on the wrist. I do believe in capital punishment and long sentences. I think as a society we should insist on faster process of the capital punishment. When a man is on death row it costs the taxpayers about $50,000 per year to support him. Many of the death row inmates stay on death row 15-20 years before the sentence is carried out, that equates to about $750,000-$1,000,000 for the taxpayers, and I think that is far too much.
However, my concern for the inmates is after they are released. If they are out on a program such as probation or parole I think they should have close supervision and no understanding if they screw up. However, if they have EOS'ed which means end of sentence, a whole new set of rules should come into play. When a man is incarcerated he loses all rights such a right to vote or carry a firearm. Once a man completes his sentence EOS, that means he did not get out early, he has done all his time and as we used to refer to it, has paid his debt to society! Once this happens, that man should automatically regain his rights to vote and participate in our society again. We expect them to be a productive member of our society yet we do not put the same requirements on people who have not been incarcerated. For example, I know many people who are on welfare and disability that should not be, we do not punish them. Yet we expect more from a man released from prison, why is that? The states make it very hard for a man to regain his footing when released that's why so many return to prison. I did a case study of a man released who had no family. He was released with a cheap suit and $10. He had no place to stay, no clothes, no job and enough money to eat for one day. What was this man to do? We accept the responsibility to lock up people who break the law and we take away their rights as an American. I think we should accept the same responsibility to train them while in prison and restore their rights and dignity when they have served their time. If men were taken off death row in three years, which is plenty of time to appeal, insted of the 15-20 years, it would save the state of Alabama for example, about $96,000,000. That is a lot of taxpayer money and could be used to help the men being released be successful. If a man gets out of prison and gets his rights back, has enough money to get by until he can get a job he is far less likely to return to prison and will become a taxpayer insted of a tax burden.

Excellent lens and facts! This is indeed a big problem which leads an inmates to commit many future offenses. Without some kind of job education after their release from federal prisons, correctional facilities, county jails or department of corrections, they're doomed to go back!

Hi - great lens. I also suggest to most people to help when needed but not to try and push. Some people when getting out are a tad leary of people and motives. Anyhow - I also found a place that has a good time credit prison calculator that works for federal prisons and all state prisons - its at http://www.jailguide.com
