Father of the Groom Speech

Even if you are used to presenting in public and most people start sweating at the very thought of it, the father of the groom speech has to be planned. Afterall there are things you really cannot leave out or forget to say. Just think about the scandal if you forgot to welcome the bride to the family? What if you were so tense that you told that embarrassing story that you so promised you would not tell?

When you are happy with your notes, I would write it out on small cue cards. They are easy to handle and will help you enormously to deliver your wedding speech. They will also fit in your suit pocket on the day, so you can keep them close!

Practice, practice, practice. I cannot stress this enough. Do a couple of practice runs on your own. Make sure that you say your speech aloud. You need to get used to the sound of your voice as you say your speech. I know that might sound silly but you need to think about people listening - are you varying your tone for example? Are you saying the punchline the way it should be delivered? Are you talking loud enough - will guests at the back of the room hear you?

Practicing your speech aloud will help you answer these questions. It will also give you the confidence to deliver a really great father of the groom speech. Once you feel that you are well practiced, gather a small audience and do one last practice run. Take on board any helpful criticism they give you and give your speech one final polish.
