My Dad
When I was in college and visiting home for a holiday, I managed to "total" mom's car, with a cigarette! The car had smoldered all night long. Obviously I was not very adept at using the ashtray! Dad was called home from work because of the fire. When he arrived, the yard was full of people, cars, fire trucks. In the small town of Scottsboro in those days, fires were big news announced on local radio - and everyone had come out to see the big fire!
Dad got out of his car, walked across the yard, waved at the crowd and with a big smile said, "Good Morning, Everybody!" He then threw his big arms around me and gently walked me into the house.
He never said much about that car, but he did reprimand me for "sneak-smoking".
"If you are going to smoke, don't sneak!", he said. "And quit stealing my cigarettes!"
I can easily laugh about that now - but oh how that story depicts our dad. He never got excited or upset about that event at all. He just handled it all in his usual calm way.
I am thankful. Thank you, Dad!

The World is Mine by Dr. Tennyson Guyer
Daddy's Favorite
Today upon a bus I saw a girl with golden hair;
She seemed so gay, I envied her, and wished that I were half so fair;
I watched her as she rose to leave, and saw her hobble down the aisle.
She had one leg and wore a crutch, but as she passed--a smile.
Oh, God, forgive me when I whine;
I have two legs--the world is mine.
Later on I bought some sweets. The boy who sold them had such charm,
I thought I'd stop and talk awhile. If I were late, t'would do no harm.
And as we talked he said, "thank you, sir, you've really been so kind .
It's nice to talk to folks like you because, you see, I'm blind."
Oh, God , forgive me when I whine;
I have two eyes--the world is mine.
Later, walking down the street, I met a boy with eyes so blue.
But he stood and watched the others play, it seemed he knew not what to do.
I paused, and then I said," Why don't you join the others, dear?"
But he looked straight ahead without a word, and then I knew, he couldn't hear.
Oh, God forgive me when I whine;
I have two ears--the world is mine.
Two legs to take me where I go,
Two eyes to see the sunset's glow,
Two ears to hear all I should know,
Oh, God, forgive me when I whine;
I'm blest, indeed, the world is mine.

- Your dad sounds like a great father, Joan. He handled that situation perfectly -- without scarring you. That's a wonderful father. ...My dad, once he grew up and became himself, had the kindest eyes I've ever seen. The visual memory gives me comfort at rough times.

- Great lens and your Dad sounds like he was a wonderful father. I just call my Dad "Dad" but called him "Daddy" when I was a kid. And, he is still alive - I'm so grateful for that - even though I rarely see him - it's nice knowing he's only a phone call away.
