ADRENAL FATIGUE, EXHAUSTION, WEAKNESS - THE NATURAL WAY OUT!
Before we get to the real causes of this condition, let me go over the structure of this lens, First, we will cover U.S. stats, then primary and secondary symptoms, popular opinion of the causes, M.D. treatment and complimentary recommendations (incl. exercise). After we lay out the general perspective, coverage of natural medicine causation and restorative strategies will be presented.
For those in crisis, there is section devoted to bringing you quickly out of the dungeon so you can stabilize and sit down with your practitioner.
One million Americans have CFS. This mysterious illness holds captive more people in the U.S. than multiple sclerosis, lupus, lung cancer or ovarian cancer.
RISK GROUPS
Medical researchers continue to search for possible causes and risk factors for CFS. Many questions remain, but there are some characteristics that may help indicate who is most at risk for CFS:
- CFS happens 4 times more often in women compared to men, while either gender can manifest the disease.
- CFS occurs more frequently in people in their 40s and 50s, but not limited to this range.
- CFS is least common in children than in adults. According to research, CFS is more common in teenagers than in younger children.
- CFS occurs in all ethnic and racial groups as well as all countries. Research indicates that CFS occurs equally amongst African Americans, Hispanics and Caucasians.
- CFS is not limited to income level. All financial strata are vulnerable to CFS,
- Sometimes multiple CFS occur in the same family, however, there is no indication that it's contagious. Instead, there may be a familial or genetic link.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention May, 2006
DEFINING CFS SYMPTOMS
Diagnostic Criteria: CFS is marked by unexplained persistent fatigue that has lasted, minimally, 6 months or more, not the result of ongoing effort, not substantially relieved by rest while CFS causes a substantial reduction in activities of daily living (ADL), along with at least four of the eight primary signs and symptoms:
- Extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise
- unrefreshing sleep
- Substantial loss of memory or concentration
- Unexplained muscle pain
- Pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness
- headaches of a new type, pattern or severity
- sore throat
- tender neck or armpit lymph nodes. Painful and mildly enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
Consequences may develop if one exerts beyond capability. CFS can impair as much as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, congestive heart failure and similar chronic ailments. Symptom severity varies from person to person and may vary over time for an individual.
Additional Various Signs and Symptoms (unofficial definition)
These include:
- Abdominal pain
- Allergies or sensitivities to foods, alcohol, odors, chemicals, medications or
- noise
- Bloating
- Chest pain
- Chronic cough
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness, balance problems or fainting
- Dry mouth
- Earache
- Irregular heartbeat
- Jaw pain
- Morning stiffness
- Nausea
- Chills and night sweats
- Psychological problems, such as depression, irritability, anxiety disorders and panic attacks
- Shortness of breath
- Tingling sensations
- Visual disturbances, such as blurring, sensitivity to light, eye pain and dry eyes
- Weight loss or gain
If you have chronic fatigue syndrome, your symptoms may peak and become stable early on, and then come and go over time. Some people go on to recover completely, while others grow progressively worse. It depends on whether you can grasp the following concerns and strategies or not.
DOCTORS SAY THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE, HOWEVER...
Doctors will say there is no known cure for CFS. According to the Mayo Clinic, "treatment is aimed at symptom relief and improved function." "A combination of drug and nondrug therapies is usually recommended." However, the most obvious reasons or pre-conditions, if changed, will eradicate the conditions the body is serving up. This website is dedicated to revealing true restorative strategies that in the long run benefit the client. THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF EXHAUSTION CONDITIONS
Our Civilization is Programmed For Our Children To Perform and Compete or They Will Miss Out On the Good Life
STRESS FOUNDATIONCan we measure up to this expectation? For awhile but when reach into our 40s, The ability to push long hours on the job, exercise to exhaustion, party hearty, regenerate the next day and do it all again the next day, doesn't work the same way as it did in your early 30s. Add to that a familiy, marriage, kids, finanacial goals, and you have ongoing stress.
If one has a childhood history where excess stress and trauma occurrs then the person may become vulnerable to an intolerance to stress. This can show up later as hypervigilance or extra excitability. This pre-condition makes later stress more challenging. When a normal stress event presents itself then the psychic charge is more than doubled. This makes for an extra challenge. Even though, a lot of us are walking around with this experience, may have an opportunity for empathy and support, most will choose to suffer quietly and be left alone.
PERPETUATION OF STRESS - MIND-BODY-SPIRIT CONNECTION
In the present, when stress is experienced, the fight or flight response is more heightened as opposed to a neutral, thoughtful, analytical and non-reactive communication. With a habitual response of going beyond unrecognizable boundaries of energy reserves, eventually, the store of energy contained in the kidneys and adrenals becomes depleted. If the stressed person cannot stop themselves from running themselves down, then eventually, the body will give out in one of a multitude of imbalances:
- Chronic Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Allergies
- Panic Attacks
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Digestive Problems
- Insomnia
- Spasms
- Tremors
- Paralysis (one side or both)
- Emotional/Mental Imbalance
Many people, from my observation, continue in their burnout behavior, even though, they are becoming symptom and disease ridden. This strongly suggests that there is an additional psychic-spiritual component. In the past, a key person said something to wound the person and that keeps him or her locked into the destructive demeanor. The pattern is very similar to an addict who can't stop the dependency behavior on the drugs and lifestyle. In similar fashion, The person cannot stop the energy depletion cycle:
- stay up late and burn out their adrenals
- eat a diet that keeps them up at night and breaks down their digestive balance
- career-work behaviors which exacerbates the body's energy deficiency syndromes.
- take on more family resposibilities beyond their current physical capacity
diabetes, chronic fatigue, anxiety, menopause/andropause, heat attack, stroke, cancer, obesity, arthritis, MS, shortened life span, etc.
The underpinning is an irrational spiritual conflict. People are caught in the belief they must continue in behaviors that sacrifice the body. They believe they have to work harder to be secure. But instead of making themselves secure, they do the opposite. They wear themsleves down til the adrenals/kidneys run down. Then, all the organs stacked above, that depend on the energy provided by them, start failing. The heart skips beats, we feel anxiety or palpitations. The liver is weak and so blood isn't filtered, the stomach hurts with nausea, gall bladder problems, then all the organs become undernourished. In this general, weakened, sluggish state, there is no wonder, we are overwhelmed and lost, as to which way to turn. Some will say to themselves, "I have to go harder!", when the body is screaming, "Stop, take care of me!" Other voices have become too loud to hear yourself think and feel.
Analogy: Your body is like a car. Remember when you were driving your car and your car was almost empty of gas. You looked around for gas and could not find a station. So you went further, and now your car was running on gas fumes and vapor. The car starts to sputter, it jumps, accelerates and slows down, back and forth. You hope you can make it to the filling station. But you don't make it and your car stalls. You now have to walk down a dark road to rent a gas can and then walk it back. You put the gallon in. You start the car and it takes awhile for the gas to start. Gas is finally going to the engine, You flood it with too much gas. You have to wait for the gas to subside. Then you start without gas. Then it goes. But not for long because you have to stop to fill the car up. Fill it up and now you are on your way.
As with the car, we have to learn not to go too far or we will get stranded or exhausted. And when we do get some energy, we have to go slow at the start until we have enough energy to run. We have rebuild our energy reserves and maintain it.
Some come into the world knowing how to maintain their natural energy, whereas some have to learn how to do it, while others play Russian Roulette with their it.
Our Environment of Stress
- We believe we must be the steady rock or be strong for everyone else. The result is we drain our reserves.
- Our boss and jobs expect us to give everything.
- We have to have the bigger house or 2 houses.
- Then the domestic engineers take on too much because the other spouse is felt to expect it.
The end to this exhaustion syndrome will come when the sufferer seriously matches the problem(s) on a body-mind and spirit level. The wounds need attention from:
- Medical professionals: doctors and ancillary staff are valuable for diagnostics and making recommendations per symptoms. Patient management and direction can be valuable when the practitioner is aware of the options that best match the patient's needs. Some clients want pharmaceutical and/or 100% natural formulations.
- Chinese Medicine Herbalist: The physical wounds may be better served by a seasoned Chinese medicine master herbalist who can communicate comfortably in the client's language. Though they cannot diagnose, they can assess according to Chinese medicine practices. He/she will offer herbal formulas that are customized to meet physical symptoms while the patient processes the mind-body-spiritual connection. The Chinese medicine practitioner can give you a diet that enhances your restoration rather than defeats your recovery. An accupuncturist is usually not trained at doing this procedure. The practitioner has to have a strong desire to practice herbology after their education.
- Spiritual Life Coach: The wounds need attention from an adept Spiritual Life Coach whether professionally trained or a highly skilled coach. What matters is that the practitioner can help the wounded get at the underlying, irrationally charged, unconscious message that drives the individual to expend beyond physical reserves. Effective counseling skills are essential. Their skill level and life experience is an added benefit if the client desires to move quickly through the mental obstacles.
- Chiropractors: Clients may present with skeletal-soft tissue complications. For instance, if the back is compressed and thus cutting off pathways then adjustment can be very valuable. Connective tissue can benefit from chiropractic manipulation. They have more techniques than can be listed that many report freedom from constriction.
There are other skilled practitioners that should not be forgotten. They have demonstrated effective support: Naturopathic doctors, Massage therapists, Iridologists, Energy medicine practitioners, etc.
FOOD THERAPY FOR EXHAUSTION CONDITIONS

STRENGTH FOODS
If you want to become strong, eat carbohydrates before your workout and eat plenty of protein afterwards. Normal amounts of insulin help muscles grow, and eating carbohydrates causes your blood sugar to rise, which, in turn, causes your pancreas to release insulin. Taking in large amounts of protein after a workout helps muscles to recover faster from hard exercise, so you can do more hard work and grow larger and stronger muscles (Journal of Physiology, Volume 573, 2006).
To increase muscle strength, the weights you lift must be heavy enough to cause muscle burning while you lift and your muscles to feel sore on the next day. The soreness is caused by damage to the muscle fibers themselves. Most athletes quickly learn to lift lighter weights on as many days as it takes for the soreness to go away, and then lift very heavy weights again. The faster muscles heal from hard workouts, the more quickly you can go back to lifting heavy weights and the stronger you will become.
Insulin brings protein building blocks, called amino acids, into muscles to increase the rate of healing. Eating carbohydrates raises blood insulin levels. Protein is the building blocks for all tissues, particularly muscle. So the faster and more protein you can bring into muscle fibers, the more quickly they heal and the faster you can go back to your heavy lifting program. Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

HOW ARE YOU DOING? OH, I'M GOOD, I'M GREAT! REALLLY!
How many times have we all answered others positively when we really feel bad?
More and more people who are used to feeling strong and/or expect themselves to be strong are gradually becoming aware of hitting the wall. Stress is re-creating stress:- Fathers who are used to being the rock in the family are finding their energy slipping away. They push harder thinking they can last a little longer.
- Mothers who accepted the program that they must work, take care of the home, exercise, study to be equal or better are finding they can't recover their vitality. That morning coffee is mak'n it as usual. After work, go home, and what?
- Marriages are more stressed. Both are working plus hours. Because both are tired, they need more from their partners. This tires the other out. Have some children? "Whose turn is it to get up this time when the baby is crying?" And so it goes. When they are tired, their choice of words contain elements of their stress which the other can easily be misinterpreted. The incongruent expression can lead to arguments with no resolution especially for the untrained in relationship skills. Are we running out of the "juice" to maintain a healthy relationship?
- Singles: May quietly prefer to stay that way while the urge to merge is also great. To be with someone or not is tempered by prior relationship learning experiences that did and didn't work out. Given the degree of stress in enough areas of life, singles can be highly affected and may divert more from being with another. Stress has a way of surfacing old wounds. These wounds can be projected into our current relationships and be disruptive depending on how we are doing. Its important, in relationships, that there are elements of calmness and security rather than too much excitement, which is not too far from stress, if prolonged.
- Co-workers can't take the stress in the office. Certain workers who are way out of bounds on their stress are taking the rest of the office down the tubes.
- Road rage: People are on the road getting more aggressive and less courtesy. Are we more irritable, less tolerance, grumpy, vulnerable to blow up.
- Parents at Little League ball games are getting more than excited at their kid's games. Yelling and becoming physical with kids and other opposing kid's parents. A general posturing for neighborhood war is raging in our society. Where is this coming from?
- Bosses: Don't think your boss is getting away with anything. The average executive is working long hours (70 hrs.+). Maybe on top they recuperate (hardly) but the middle executive is losing her job and the one holding on is taking her work home every night. She worries if she can handle the next challenge, unable to sleep, doing her subordinates work and hers to meet goals and objectives. However, their productivity gradually wanes and the result is put another healthy part in their place-more stress.
- Small Business Owners: Trying to keep up with it all. If you can just get ahead, get some trusted help. Its great to own your business but being stretched so far means late and long hours. If you have a family, you feel guilty you are not around enough. If you sacrifice too much then the body can suffer, chest pains, can't sleep, blood pressure, etc. All signs letting you know, you are going to far.
- Health: Since 1990, diabetes has grown more than 500%. Half the population is now overweight. How did this happen? Doctors are the #1 killer, not heart disease. Advertisements on TV about pharmaceuticals are as common as cigarette campaigns before they were made illegal on TV. WOW, thats progress!
optimism may have room to rise. The first step is to become aware of the hole
we are digging.
When we are tired, we are more likly to make mistakes in social settings. Its kind of like being drunk. Our brain, in particular, our upper brain (Cortex) doesn't receive enough energy and blood, so it suffers and doesn't serve to normal capacity. The result is we act without our best judgment and are really taking risks with the consequences. The capacity to discern our situation of sustained weakness is not as apparent. We are not conscious and we are not as aware of how we are affecting others. We are less caring and/or empathetic.
Even though this is obvious, hospital administrations still abuse their interns with 100+ hour work weeks. Never mind the treatment mistakes. Have you ever talked to a doctor in this state? They are short, curt and insensitive. What would anyone expect when the status quo is to treat these young, beginning physicians like fodder rather than as human beings. How can they learn, let alone, be sensitive caring doctors. Here they are supposed be role models of health, to spout the bliss of health, however, they are set up to fail in this expression from the beginning.
I know we are trying to do the best we can but it is time to rethink before we can't think anymore. If we continue in this hyper vigilant pattern then its harder to turn it around. Our physical organs become deficient. The kidneys and adrenals, the seat of our life force or energy may not revive. Eventually, we will just crash due to exhaustion as a people and society, economically depressed, socially depriived, etc.
For those not experiencing stress, who have learned to manage it, you are a valuable asset for those who are still learning. I welcome and honor your knowledge and request that if you see someone pushing too hard, let them know what you have learned. You could make a difference.
The Hare And The Tortoise
Once a hare was roaming near a lake in a forest. Suddenly he saw a tortoise and mocked at him saying - "Hurry up, you slow coach! Don't you find life very dull taking so long to cover a few yards? I could have run to the other side of the lake by now."The tortoise felt teased and dared the hare to a race. The race was to be through the wood to a fixed goal.
The hare agreed laughingly. In a few minutes he was away and out of sight.
"What a funny race it is!" he said to himself , "I am already half -way through. But it is too-too cold; why not have a nap in the warm sunshine?"
The tortoise walked steadily on and on. In a short time, he passed by the sleeping hare.
The hare slept far longer than he had intended. When he woke up at last, he looked around in surprise and said to himself," Not even a sigh of the poor tortoise anywhere so far; I had better trot along and finish the race."
The hare ran to the goal. He was amazed to see all the animals cheering the tortoise who had arrived just a minute earlier. how ashamed he felt indeed!
MORAL : Slow and steady wins the race.
Story from Bygosh.com/Features/092000/hare.htm
"Never allow anyone to rain on your parade and thus cast a pall of gloom and defeat on the entire day. Remember that no talent, no self-denial, no brains, no character, are required to set up in the fault-finding business. Nothing external can have any power over you unless you permit it. Your time is too precious to be sacrificed in wasted days combating the menial forces of hate, jealously, and envy. Guard your fragile life carefully. Only God can shape a flower, but any foolish child can pull it to pieces."Og Mandino quotes (American Essayist and Psychologist, 1923-1996)
TOP 10 CAUSES OF ADRENAL & CHRONIC FATIGUE
Primary activities that interfere with adrenal health and your life energy.

- Working too much: Due to insecurity whether it's boss sponsored or yourself, the end result is you go too hard and long beyond your adrenal's reserves. Your boss can be asking for too much and you may be a willing participant or not but you still go on. You need to honor your needs. The job or others will not. Its time, to take care of yourself. Now, is an opportunity to learn to recognize when you are approaching your exhaustive boundaries.
- Incongruence: Personal dishonoring. You say no when you mean to say yes and you say yes when you meant no. This can involve work, friends, community and family. This state causes distress and disgust for oneself. You need to slow down until can hear your voice or higher consult clearly. Then learn to follow through on that premise rather than be reactive.
- Over-indulgence: Excessive occupation with anything such as food, drug, sport, etc. can result in an imbalance where your primary needs are neglected. Sleep can be interrupted if your belly is too full, prevents laying down and raises blood sugar where you remain in a wakeful state. Athletics can be conducted beyond your reserves thus weakening your immunity and protection. Sports are OK but there needs to be a steady buildup, not an all out blast of epinephrine, to the point of exhaustion. Consider Tai Chi, Qi gong and Yoga which builds energy rather than depletes it.
- Harassment: Whether it's a personal relationship work relationship or neighbor, this can be very disturbing. Sleepless nights are not unusual and need to be assessed as to whether the relationship should continue or remedied. Working with a counselor, psychotherapist or Spiritual Life Coach can be very beneficial in resolving this concern.
- Menopause and Andropause: The liver in the body can become excessively warm due to toxicity. The warmth travels up while cold moves down. When liver heat rises, the waves to varying degrees heat up everything up through to the head. At night, the heat causes sweating, keeps us alert, excess thinking, avoidance of deep level (REM) sleep, etc. When you cool the liver with diet and Chinese herbs, this aspect is removed from the equation.
- Trauma: Delayed Stress. Shocking events can be too taxing on your kidneys and adrenals. When you are engaged in an emergency all the emergency hormones like epinephrine and nor-epinephrine are employed. Once used up, then the adrenal crash, with you along with them. We may call this fainting, sudden fatigue, collapse, etc. But when it is prolonged, you need to wait and be sincerely patient in their gradual build-up of these hormones. This does not mean when you get a little energy back, you're ready to go hard. Take it slow and easy.
- Prolonged Burn-out: Some of us know we are burning out our adrenals but still keep going. We are gamblers. We say to ourselves, "I'm exhausted but if I can just go a little longer then I will cruise later. I just need to get this project(s) done." In reality, its a habit of putting ourselves off. We are getting tingling sensations, numbing, memory slippage indications, but still we go on. We keep going on fumes! Stop or get help to stop. You can set up strategies where your negative habits are curtailed so as to not cross into those areas where gambling on your health is not rationalized.
- Insomnia: Inability or avoidance of sleep can wear down the kidneys and adrenals as most of you know. For some this is standard protocol. Whether its hyper-vigilance or undisciplined behavior, the result is a depletion of body energy. This process detracts from the needed energy to run the body and all of its functions. When this area is plugged up, the body has a great capacity to heal its self.
- Incontinence: Waking up every 2 hours to go the bathroom can be distressing. Likewise the pattern prevents deep level REM sleep as well. The reason is because the bladder has lost its energy. The cause of this is adrenal fatigue. This spiraling syndrome requires the adrenals to be supported along with bladder control that naturally suppresses the urinary urge to release even though the bladder is empty.
- Wounds From the Past: I saved this for last, not because its last in my concerns but more to delay it. A slight avoidance on my part. Even this writer has to get in touch with the emotions and then dig to make some sense of this. Here goes. When we have been over-challenged in life, it puts a stress on our minds, spirit and, of course, our body which manages the movement of the charge related to that event. To sensitive beings, they can tell you where its located at. For those not as aware, with a little help, you can not only feel its stored location but you can see it. The wound can stem from a major assault against your being or can seem like a small event. All that matters is that your equilibrium has been disturbed. The negative charge can develop with a condescending remark from parents, family, teachers, friends, etc. The judge of its intensity is you not anyone else who decides you are over-sensitive. The wound and its charged event is very important for the injured to transform it in order to be free from it. You can process this with a good talk therapist, hypnotherapist (not hypnotist), Spiritual Life Coach, etc.
- The Angel Syndrome: I know I said 10 Causes but this keeps coming up in my intakes so I have to point it out. I am finding "Angel type" personalities, mainly women and some men with the following characteristics:
- caregivers
- people are dependent on them
- people counsel with them
- get things done
- community hubs
- above average - genius intelligence
- feel guilty when saying no
- feel guilty when others help them
- fall in love with someone's potential and try to coach that person to greatness
- may be co-dependent with addicts & alcoholics ("enablers")
- people oriented
- eat for stress reduction
- give beyond their energy reserves
- prefer to be with people, one-to-one
- Get along with most people
- rarely break a rule
- stay in relationships much longer than the average person would
- take on the relationship as an assignment whereby they try to help the person overcome their self doubts and focus upon their strengths and talents
- caregivers
Summary: I hope this prompts you to seek further support on this challenging condition. To accept this as a way of life will have serious consequences to your longevity and your quality of life. Please move to your next level of release from chronic fatigue.
Some Patients Are Beyond Help!
This may be a harsh way to put it but someone needs to take the risk to reach out to these clients before its too late!
If you have been in the field long, you are bound to run into this type of client. I find about 20% of the clients are unaware that they are in this pattern. The client comes in with her/his complaints about leg pain, back pain, hand pain, neck pain, knee pain, etc. There may have been an accident. So, most practitioners will try to discern how much of the pain is accident or behavior related. So, a good practitioner will further develop an understanding of how the client contributes to his/her pain or weakness. Here, for example, are some of the questions and not so unusual responses from the client:- "Did you have an accident?" "Yes"
- "Where is the pain?" "Lower back and right leg."
- "What do you think is causing the pain?" "The car accident."
- "Any allegies?" "Not that I know of."
- "Do you eat any sweet foods?" "No, I eat only good food."
- "How much bread?" "Oh not at all!"
- "How late do you stay up?" "I go to bed early every night. Once in awhile, I stay up late."
- "Do you overeat?" "No, I eat very little."
- "How much is very little?" "A little. Not even enough to make me full."
- "Do you exercise?" "Yes, all the time. Four times a week."
- "How much do you drink?" "Very little."
- "Any other problems, people have talked to you about?" "No, I have good relationships with everyone!"
- "How is work going?" "Just fine! I am one of the best performers at work."
- "How many hours do you work?" "Whatever it takes to get the job done." (If it seems vague here, keep following)
Typically, the patient is not conscious of what is happening here. That is, the patient is holding back on telling the practitioner the whole story for a good, unconscious reason. They are protecting themselves from invisable pain that is worse than the pain they are experiencing now.
The client is:
- not able be honest
- subtly ashamed of their unhealthy behavior. They really want to get well but not at the expense of someone knowing about their uncontrollable, dependent behavior.
- not able to admit he or she is trapped and not able to muster up self - discipline.
- unable to admit he or she needs some gentle help with self honesty regarding their health.
- incapable of confronting oneself and admitting that they are powerless over this one area.
- not able to cease externalizing responsibility for treatment failure (practitioner). This can be tricky. Treatment adjustments may require 3-5 trials before the practitioner-client relationship is insinc and the right remedy is determined.
- unable to discontinue moving from one practitioner to another.
Now, you may wonder, how do I know this person so well? Well, I know, because I am aware that all of us do some of this in our treatment until we finally get it. We turn our malady around by teaming up with people who are strong where we are challenged. All of us have challenges, don't let anything get in the way of your treatment success.
