Acquiring a Tiffany-inspired Atlas pendant

Designer inspired jewelry: same look, great price!
When I vacationed in San Francisco several years ago, I went into Tiffany & Co. just for a fun browse; I'd heard so much about the famous store that I was curious to experience it for myself. That's when I saw their Atlas line of silver jewelry and fell in love with it. That was a serious flaw in my plan! I'd thought it would be all glittery gemstones and fancy things that don't fit my lifestyle; I hadn't expected to see anything I'd seriously want. Tiffany jewelry doesn't come cheap, and I'd already spent a lot on the trip.
The round Atlas pendant is the piece I wanted most, but the $200 price tag made me uncomfortable. What if I bought it and rarely wore it? Worse, what if I wore it and lost it? After being reassured that I could buy the piece from their website at any time, I finally decided to hold off and think longer before making such a big purchase.
Two years later, I was still thinking about that pendant. I'd visited the Tiffany's website several times and was almost ready to buy. I decided to do some web searching on the chance that I might find a coupon for free shipping -- which is when I discovered lots of web stores selling replicas of the pendant I wanted for a fraction of the cost.

Not all replicas are quality
And not all sellers are reliable
I decided to only consider pieces I could order through Amazon.com; that way, I'd have the protection of Amazon's guarantee to fall back on if the transaction went bad. (If you think that's not a concern, read this New York Times article about the danger of shopping with an unknown retailer online.) Even with a safe storefront, ordering a replica can be tricky. I was under the impression that the pieces would all be roughly the same size as the Tiffany version, which wasn't the case. The first pendant I ordered was smaller than I expected, too thin, and irregularly shaped -- in short, a huge disappointment. (Not every vendor supplies detailed information about the jewelry size, and you can't always tell from a picture.) So I returned it. I was tempted to give up at that point and order the real thing, but I decided to give it one more try.The vendor I ordered from next was Eve's Addiction, and I couldn't be happier with their product. The silver is lovely, the design is perfectly symmetrical, and it looks very high quality. Plus the chain is a nice length and quite sturdy -- not thin and flimsy in the least. (While it didn't come in a gift box, Eve's Addiction included a blue velvet drawstring bag, which I prefer since it takes up less space.) I wear my pendant often and I've gotten lots of compliments on it, so I consider the experience a total win! I have the necklace I wanted, and it didn't bust my budget. (Plus I don't have to worry about it costing a fortune if I lose it. I misplaced mine for a few weeks when I moved, and it was comforting to know that I could afford to replace it if necessary.)

Tiffany-inspired jewelry from Eve's Addiction
I can't stress enough how happy I am with the Atlas pendant I got from Eve's Addiction. I would definitely order from them again -- in fact, I have another of their pendants on my wish list.
UPDATE, 5/29/12: The original pendant is currently out of stock, but should be available again soon.

Tiffany Atlas auctions
eBay auctions are another alternative to buying direct from Tiffany, although I strongly recommend bidding with caution! Be sure to look at the seller's reviews before you bid.

- It seems to be about 50/50 when it comes to replicas compared to originals, at least in my experience. Finding a quality item from a reputable seller can be tricky, expensive, and time-consuming but also very exciting once one or two are found.
Thank you for this lens and your experience.

- Enjoyed this much. Too many replicas in Asia, I don't want to look anymore at replicas but I have to admit there are some really good ones.

- I thought your story was really cute and I am glad that in the end you were able to get what you really wanted for a fraction of the price. All it matters is that you enjoy the piece and have fun wearing it. Way to go!
