My Favorite Funny Thai Ads. # 1 - 5

Thailand: A Land Of Mysteries - And Kooky Advertising

I wouldn't be the first to say that Thai people (and indeed, most of S. E. Asian peoples) somehow manage to appear very happy, irrespective of Life's circumstances.

I find that trait both admirable and confusing but still utterly charming and it is certainly evident in their TV advertising, which is funny, cheeky and often surprisingly irreverent.

Thai viewers complain (on Youtube) that their commercials are the best part of Thai television - apparently, it mostly consists of low-budget soap operas - but if that's the case, my advice is turn the sound down for the programs and up for the ads. - they're certainly worth it.

# 1: Shera Ceiling Boards: Shakespearean Gecko

have the wrong ceiling boards might precipitate a romantic disaster

Two Geckos, deeply in love, are torn apart by fate - and poor ceiling protection. The home owner should have had SHERA ceiling boards. Tut tut!

N.B.: The theme is from the tear-jerker movie, LOVE STORY.

Love Story

the soundtrack to the good old romance tearjerker from 1970

"One of the best musical scores ever.

I remember seeing the film when it came out in the theaters and then getting the soundtrack on vinyl and playing it to death. Now with the CD release it still brings back the images of the film and the times it was released, as vividly as if they were today. The score is haunting and beautiful and magnificently echoed the feel of the story, enhancing the youth, promise and sadness in the lives of Oliver and Jenny.

If you loved the film, you have to have the album.."

# 2: Penzoil Long Life Motor Oil

featuring some of Thailand's infamous trans-gender lady-boys

To many Westerners, Ladyboys or kathoey are, at best a phenomenon and at worst, abhorrent. To Thais, they are an understandable part of a complex Society - a position that I'm at ease with.

Nevertheless, to me, poking fun at these Thai transvestites - as in this Penzoil ad - is fair game.

N.B.: This Thai language translation c/o:Youtube member Random Mizer (edited - with guesswork - by yours truly)

Ladyboys: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bearded Ladyboy: Miss Dow, what the heck's in that car? Oh! What a handsome guy. My God!
Ladyboys: ^_^
Pennzoil Long Life voice over: The Power of Pennzoil Long Life can protect the machine and make it [run] perfectly (i.e. run away from Lady Boys)
Bearded Ladyboy: Wait for me please!!! Come back!

"Yeah, but what happens if the ladyboys buy the [Penzoil]? :O! -gasp-" Youtube member Bioloser

REUTERS reported in June 2008 that Ladyboys at a school in Thailand have won the right to have their own toilet.

The Third Sex: Kathoey, Thailand's Ladyboys

a spotlight on Thailand's trans-gender phenomenon

The Third Sex (Kathoey - Thailand's Ladyboys)

Amazon Price: $9.00 (as of 02/23/2012)Buy Now

"Totman's access to the trans-gender community in Thailand is very unusual, and he has been able to gain access to very intimate facets of khatoey life that is denied most people. The book itself presents a mix of biographical sections, (about two khatoeys called Daeng and Lek) and sections on the wider issue of khatoey. The latter parts cover such issues Buddhism and khathoeys, the sex industry in Thailand, historical and modern khathoey."
Amazon reviewer Bu-Chan

"Totman provides the reader three excellent kathoey life histories, the final one transcending the diva pretensions of the first two. A...commendable and intelligent work"
Amazon reviewer Calliope Van Halen

# 3: Green Tea Drink

unfortunately, I can't work out the name of the brand

FYI: Green tea (especially that made from the tips of the plant) has been drunk in the East as a preventative for several thousand years and modern Science is rapidly discovering that ECEG - green tea extract - has a powerful inhibitory effect on many diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease, High Blood Pressure, various cancers etc.

(See: Science Daily.com for many scientific research studies)

In this fantastic, mythology-like ad., the father and son caterpillars are after the tips of the green tea - and they almost get it with the son's use of hypnosis - except that the human tea-picker knows that his tea tip is needed for the green tea drink and somehow manages to overcome the young caterpillar's mystical mind powers.

A-w-w-w!

But thank goodness!

"These guys need a friggin' TV SHOW. " Youtube member ZnaylPyro

"If that [caterpillar] had a hand and just did the Jedi wave, it may have worked. LOL" Youtube member Gine012

# 4: Sealect Tuna

Apparently, there have been other versions of this commercial (American and Italian, at least) but I can't find out where the commercial originated from. Unfortunately, this video version includes canned laughter from a TV show - damnations!

Fat Actress - The Complete First Season

starring Kirstie Alley

"Fat Actress...is...an awkward mixture of reality show, satirical autobiography and vanity production. [The] comedy chronicles Alley's battle with her body, an entity which has grown in size like one of those voracious radioactive monsters in sci-fi films of the '50s."
The Washington Post

Fat Actress...is shocking and very funny...In the guise of self-deprecation, Ms. Alley sends up the rest of Hollywood in all its folly."
The New York Times

"Hilariously catty and supremely mean."

"This show is frankly, the funniest thing on TV. It's not everyone's taste, granted but it made me laugh so hard I almost passed out." Amazon customer W. Dorsett

"As the title of the show suggests, it revolves around Kirstie being a fat actress in Hollywood. From the first episode, which starts with her getting on a scale and throwing herself on the floor screaming and sobbing, till the last one which ends with her saying "As God is my witness, I'll never be fat again" this show is funny, funny, funny.
She has taken her real life experiences and has created most honest, in-your-face comedy I've seen in a long time. Put in a mix all of her Hollywood friends as guests on a show and you've got one entertaining show."
Amazon customer David Khaindrava

"I can't remember that last time we laughed so hard." Amazon customer C. LeClaire

# 5: Thai Mobile Phones

the pigeon expresses his opinion

My husband was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam war. I had to show him some of these, especially the ones with the geckos. He thought it was really funny because geckos were always falling off the ceilings. Very cute lens.
