Children's Music Can Drive You Crazy!

Children love music, don't they? From the cradle where they heard "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to preschool where they did finger play to songs like "Itsy, Bitsy, Spider", it enriches a child's existence to hear and to participate in musical activity. But let's be realistic. How much can an adult actually take of nursery rhymes and the alphabet song?

What About the Wiggles?

Can't stand 'em.
Read why below.

Spare me the Wiggles, please.

I am not a Wiggles fan. As a musician, I find their melodies simplistic and trite. As I listen to them, I don't hear anything new. If I'm going to listen to the Wiggles, I might as well turn my musical sensibilities all the way down and buy a Barney or a Raffi album!

Along Came Sirius

I received the gift of Sirius Satellite Radio one Christmas and discovered the Kids Stuff Channel. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving. Not only could I listen to my 70s and 80s channels of music, Elvis and Frank Sinatra, the children had a channel all their own. Their own channel with songs that were catchy, easy to listen to, and (ahem) great for a sing along. I'd like to highlight a few of my favorite songs here.

Peter Himmelman

Apparently this dude was in the "real" music business and quit to do children's songs. Boy, am I glad I did. He's great. Songs like "Feet" and "My Green Kite" are loved by my children, so much so that I finally purchased them from Amazon and made them their own custom album of songs.

How can you resist the marching band rhythm of "Feet" and the lisping, rather annoyed pilot in the bridge of "My Green Kite". Sometimes I find myself humming these songs while I'm cleaning. Very catchy, with lyrics that my children love and interesting instrumentation.

Justin Roberts

All I can say is this guy looks exactly how he sounds. I have no idea how old he is, but he looks about 12. Either way, he has quite a few songs that I like - "Pop Fly" about a kid in left field watching with growing trepidation at a fly ball hit his way, "Way Out" a quasi-calypso (think "Under the Sea) tune about characters who long to be something different than they are. He's also got "Tickle my Toes" which reminds me of a John Denver song.

The Sippy Cups

they rock out!

Talk about a rock band! My son loves to 'rock out' to their "Use your Words": " The super guy told me%u2026..all second graders got to use your words%u2026%u2026(you're a prestidigitator when you use your words!)%u2026.use -your--words!" Catchy, upbeat and has a lesson too! "Magic Toast" is a Beatles-esque song that is about a great breakfast. I can't say that I've listened to all of their music, but those are the two selections that are my personal favorites.

18 Wheels on a Big Rig

While I'm not a fan of "Alien in my Nose" I will stay in the car to hear "18 wheels on a Big Rig". I love the counting in roman numerals part! "Oh, there's I, II, III, IV,V, VI, VII...." You have to hear it to appreciate it.

"You don't have to be driven crazy with repetitive kiddie songs - you have an alternative!!"

Your faves can become your kids' faves!

Are you tired of your children's music? I suggest that you take a look/listen on Amazon.com to some "alternative" children's music. Believe me, just because their children doesn't mean we have to dumb them down with repetitive nursery rhyme songs that drive us crazy! How about some Peter, Paul and Mary? Pete Seeger? John Denver? A friend of mine used to have her children listen to the BeeGees - said they put them to sleep every time. Don't know whether that's good or bad, but if it worked for her, hey, more power to her! Screen some of your favorite songs with your children - it gives you a chance to listen to something you both like.
