Memorable Lines From Great Movies

A great movie quote will bring back all those emotions you felt when watching it the first time. From crying your eyes out, to jaw-dropping amazement, or rolling on the floor laughing. Or spluttering your popcorn all over the person sitting next to you!

My Fair Lady

In the wonderful film My Fair Lady comely but common Eliza Doolittle takes elocution lessons from the supercilious Henry Higgins, professor of phonetics (the latter has made a bet with a friend that his methods can improve even the coarsest of accents). After hours of hard work, Eliza learns how to talk 'posh'. The Professor is so sure in the efficability of his teaching methods, that he asks Eliza to accompany him to a day at the horse races. The Professor is confident that Eliza will fit in perfectly with the upper-crust race-goers. How wrong he proves to be!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is guaranteed to make even the most serious person laugh till they cry. The Oompa-Loompas are sooo funny, but the quote of the movie must go to Willy Wonka himself. It's a difficult choice, as there are are many gems of complete nonsense to pick from. In close second place is 'Wangdoodles and Hornswogglers and Snozzwangers and rotten Vermicious Knids'. And in top position is Wonka's marvellous definition of invention - a very useful line to quote when someone is questioning your creative skills.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is an lovely movie. It turns a premise on its head, amply showing that simple can be as worthy as complicated. There are many brilliant quotes making choosing a favorite very difficult, but as the 'Life is like a box ....' line is a bit overused, here's another piece of knockout dialogue which hints at some homely truths.

Meet The Parents

Robert De Niro is a magnificent actor. His reputation may be built upon powerful performances in stellar movies like Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull and Goodfellas but in recent years he has tried his hand very successfully at comedy. One of the best of these is Meet The Parents, where he plays the part of an ex-CIA agent greeting a prospective son-in-law. De Niro is hilarious as the ultra-suspicious, ascerbic and very protective father, delivering some wonderful one-liners to his daughter's beau.
The sequel to Meet the Parents is the just as funny Meet The Fockers.

Little Miss Sunshine

Little Miss Sunshine is the very witty tale of a totally dysfunctional, totally mad, totally whacky family taking a road trip in a beat-up VW camper van from Albuquerque to California. I'm now certain that all families are in one-way-or-another similarly nuts, as this quote had the whole movie audience laughing, obviously since everyone knows the feeling only too well.
