A List of Some of My Favorite Movies

Bookmark and Share

I made this page about some of my favorite movies to give readers who are trying to pick out a movie some tips for selecting a good one. Now everyone's tastes are different, so I make no guarantees. But, I do suggest that if you haven't seen these, you really should try them out.

I'm not a professional reviewer, not a critic, and I won't even rate the movies I list on this page. You can just assume these movies are probably a 3 1/2 star movie in my eyes compared to others I have seen. If a movie is mediocre in my opinion, you won't see it here. I will most often avoid the obvious choices and go for films that weren't necessarily blockbusters here in the US although many are award winners. In addition, most of these movies are not the latest releases.

I won't be telling you all about the plot either; why would you want to know everything before you view the movie? I'll simply give you a bit of a hint about the type of movie they are and what it is I enjoyed about them.

Take a look below, and come back in a week or two as I update the list of my favorite movies routinely.

Tsotsi

Tsotsi

This first film on my list of favorite movies is a foreign flick. Tsotsi (2005) is the story of a young South African man, hardened by years of violence, loss, and poverty who has mutated into an indifferent criminal. When one of his crimes takes an unexpected turn, he is forced to come face to face with his true self; to reflect upon his past, to find what lies within himself, and to make a decision about his own fate.

I found Tsotsi (meaning "thug") to be a film that had me fully invested in the title character; hoping desperately that he could shed his outer shell to reclaim his soul. The film's presentation of life in the ghetto is realistic, the crimes brutal and shocking, and Tsotsi's transformation sometimes subtle and tenuous. This film is not overly sentimental although certainly the hope for restoration or rebirth is a strong theme.

Tsotsi's ultimate fate is left uncertain but his choice is clear, leaving the viewer to consider their own feelings and thoughts about the sometimes grey area between victims and criminals.

Tsotsi is not a family film, the language and violence are far too strong. However, it is engrossing and thought provoking; a film I found myself thinking through for weeks afterward. Actor Presley Chweyagae was outstanding as the title character; from the blank, cold stare of a criminal with no conscience to the confusion and then fear of a man making a fateful decision, he is convincing, frightening, and yet able to make the viewer care deeply about his plight.

**English subtitles: If you don't watch subtitled movies, believe me you will adjust quickly. The next day you may not remember it wasn't all in English.

Arlington Road

Arlington Road

Amazon Price: $9.99 (as of 12/30/2009)Buy Now

This next pick on the list of my favorite movies is uncharacteristic of me. Not everyone loved Arlington Road(1999). I stumbled upon it one summer when, on a lark, we went to one of the last remaining drive in theaters. Tim Robbins, Jeff Bridges, and Joan Cusack star in what I feel is one of my favorite thrillers. The terrorism focus isn't one that I thought would pull me in, but it did.

Jeff Bridges plays a widowed professor who studies and lectures on terrorism. His wife had been an FBI agent, killed in the line of duty, and he harbors a great deal of ill will and suspicion toward the agency. The primary story revolves around the widowers relationship with his new neighbors and his growing suspicions about them. As a viewer you move from skepticism about the main characters sanity to an increasing fear as his paranoia begins to feel very real.

I found the movie to be a mild "intellectual challenge" and one that had a terrific ending that took me by surprise and left me a bit uncomfortable. If you're ok with less than an "everything's right with the world" feeling when you finish a film, this one may be a good choice.

Movies Worthy of an Honorable Mention

Some movies aren't on my highlighed my favorite movies list above but I felt they stood out due to their unique nature and are definitely worth mentioning.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004):
This was Jim Carrey minus much of his goofiness in a rather unique love story, or break up story, whichever way you want to look at it. It started out a bit confusing for me as it switched between past and present, reality and memories, but it ended up really pulling me in. Good acting, interesting story line, and a revealing message about losing and forgetting a love.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape?(1993)
It's an older film but in case you missed it, this one is a worthy watch. With Johnny Depp as the star you can expect something that's not just run of the mill and in this one you get the bonus of a young Leonardo DiCaprio turning in a fantastic performance. It's the story of a young man's struggles under the pressure of a great deal of responsibility and living in a family with a secret and some significant dysfunction.

Hotel Rwanda (2005):
This film is based on the true story of a man who managed to shelter and save the lives of over a thousand Tutsis during the 1994 Rwandan genocide through shear persistence and a willingness to deal with anybody in anyway necessary. The horror of the event and the failure of the world to respond are stunning but real. Don Cheadle plays the lead role of the desperate yet resourceful hotel manager who does not allow himself to be paralyzed by his dire situation. The film conveys the brutality and carnage but doesn't display any graphic violence. This film should be required viewing to awaken and sensitize the world to the crimes that we are often too willing to ignore.

The Usual Suspects

These are a few all time favorites, but don't make the hightlighted portion of my favorite movies list above due to age and/or their huge box office success. In these instances, I feel confident that most breathing beings have heard of them; but, just in case...

Shawshank Redemption (1994):
If you have somehow managed not to see Shawshank Redemption, you must. Tim Robbins plays a very reserved, mild mannered hero, imprisoned for the murder of his wife and her lover. Morgan Freeman is a lifer at Shawshank who ultimately befriends him. Both are admirable men and their friendship and triumph over "evil" is perhaps predictable and somewhat melodramatic but nonetheless uplifting and beautifully told.

Crash (2005):
This movie is probably my number one choice as it was a conversation piece for weeks afterward. It weaves the lives of several individuals/couples of various racial/ethnic backgrounds together and demonstrates the destructive role that stereotyping plays in society. This is a must see.

Sixth Sense (1999):
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as more of a "psychological thriller"; it's ending, which I figured out only a moment before it occurred, was astonishing for me. If you haven't seen it and haven't heard about the ending, I say you should take the time to see it for yourself.

Babe (1995):
I do like family movies too. Babe is an older movie but one of my favorites. I love the story book feel of this film but even more, the characters are simply wonderful. Babe, the title character (pig) is adopted and befriended by a smattering of other barnyard animals and manages to escape his slaughtering and become a much more accomplished swine than anyone ever imagined. There is only suggested violence; a butchering before the holiday meal. My only reservation is that cats are maligned as the only feline character is typecast as the evil and vindictive nemesis of Babe. (oh, well) A thoroughly enjoyable film!

A Beautiful Mind (2001):
This film is loosely based on the life of world renowned mathematician John Nash. Russell Crowe is the lead and delivers an outstanding performance. As a genius with numbers, Nash is recruited to work with the government in breaking codes. His world begins to unravel however and viewers experience the reality of schizophrenia. The distinction between paranoia/delusions and reality is at first difficult to make but for me this seemed to be what the schizophrenics world must be like. The film is entertaining, educational, and inspirational; one that will surely win a spot on nearly anyone's top 20 list.

Some great choices here, funny I was only talking about The Sixth Sense to someone yesterday! Arlington Road was great too - I think Joan Cusack is very under-rated as an actress.
