My Favorite Southern Gospel Groups from Yesterday and Today

I love Southern Gospel Music. I have been a fan all of my life. I can remember as a young boy going to the all night singings. I remember hearing the Happy Goodman family, the Hinsons, the Kingsmen, the Master's Five and the list goes on and on. I was at the Georgia Mountain Center in Gainesville, Georgia when a new group from Dahlonega, Georgia made their debut and opened for the mighty Kingsmen. The new group brought the house down and stole the show and have been doing it ever since. That group was Gold City. Gold city is one of the top groups in Southern Gospel. They have been nominated and won many awards that are too many to mention. Gold City is one of my favorite groups. It really would be easier to compile a list of my least favorite Southern Gospel groups because there are really none that I do not like. There are some that I like less than others, but if it is Southern Gospel, I love it. My favorite group of all time is the Hinsons and my favorite singer is Kenny Hinson. Kenny has often been imitated, but never duplicated. Tragically, Kenny died in his prime in 1995 and is now singing and blessing hearts in Heaven. He still blesses hearts of many here on earth as his music lives on. Kenny has a son, Weston, who is following in the footsteps of his Dad and carrying on his legacy. When you listen to Weston and close your eyes you will think that the late, great Kenny Hinson is standing in front of you. This lens is dedicated to my top 5 favorite Southern Gospel groups of all time. They are not in any particular order other than my number one favorite, the Hinsons.

#1 The Hinsons

The Original HinsonsMy favorite group of all time is the Hinsons. When you combine the pen of Ronnie and Kenny with the voice of Kenny and the sound of the group, you have, in my humble opinion, the greatest group that has ever performed Southern Gospel Music. Granted, there are probably other groups that may have stronger and tighter harmonies, but as far as excitement, stage presence, Spirit (I'm talking about the anointing of the Holy Spirit) you will find none that surpass the Hinson family.

The Hinsons were originally from California and the original group was made up of siblings Kenny, Yvonne, Larry and Ronny. They started their career in Southern Gospel Music in 1967. In 1970 they released their first album with Calvary Records entitled "Here Come The Hinsons" followed by "A Gospel Sound Spectacular." In 1971 they released what would propel them to the top of the charts as they recorded the album "Sing About the Lighthouse" and the rest as they say is history. Numerous #1 hits would follow and the unmistakable voice of Kenny coupled with the pen of Ronnie would make the Hinsons one of Gospel Music's first families.

Who is your favorite Southern Gospel Singer?

My favorite Southern Gospel Singer is Kenny Hinson, second to that would be Kenny's son, Weston. Who is your favorite?

  • Benji May 26, 2012 @ 12:39 am | delete
I like the Hinsons, very good, many favorites of mine, they are all so special with the different talent to write and sing songs and play instruments, just like Joel Hemphill is also another great song writer, and Kyla Roland, Ronnie Hinson of course, and the list goes on and on, but my favorite would be of all times is good ole George Younce, allways something special about that man, untill he got runned down and was barely able to make it to the stage, I seen him at his best, and at his worst when he was holding on to make to the bus, I know if he could he would have gave us more at times, but when he felt good and was feeling a 100% their was none better than graced the stage like George Younce and his Cathedrals was unbelievable, and he would wrap up the concert in a nice neat package.

My all time favorite Gospel Group was The Hinsons and they still are and always will be. My all time favorite Gospel Singer was Kenny Hinson, cant no one sing like Kenny Hinson. He was the greatest gospel singer to ever hold a mic. and sing! Its just to bad and sad that Kenny is dead, but I am going meet him one day, when I got to Heaven. Great choice for # 1 group.

I fully agree that Kenny Hinson was the best. There will never be another Kenny Hinson but have you heard his son Weston? You can close your eyes and you will think that you are listening to Kenny. Weston comes as close as anyone I have ever heard to sounding like Kenny but of course he should... after all, he is Kenny's son.

The Happy Goodmans

My number 2 through 5 groups are not actually in order. They can change really based on what I'm listening to. My all time favorite will always be the Hinsons, but sometimes my second favorite is The Happy Goodmans sometimes its Gold City. Sometimes its the Cathedrals and sometimes its the Kingsmen, so I haven't numbered them in any particular order.

The Happy Goodman family had their beginnings in the 1940s when Howard (Happy) Goodman. The Goodmans which were made up of a combination of Howard and his brothers and sisters (seven siblings) sang as a family group through the 1950s and early 60s. In 1963 Howard and his wife Vestal along with Brothers Rusty and Sam released their first album entitled "I'm Too Near Home."

In 1964, along with the Florida Boys and the Couriers, they began performing on the weekly show The Gospel Singing Jubilee. Over the course of their career they would be honored with 2 Grammy awards, numerous Singing News Fan Awards. They would chart 15 number one songs and preformed over 3500 times.

They recorded such classics as "I Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now", "Who Am I?", "God Walks The Dark Hills", "Had It Not Been", "What A Beautiful Day For The Lord To Come Again" and many others.

The Cathedral Quartet

The Cathedral Quartet started in 1963 as a trio singing for Rex Humbard as the house Gospel Group on his Cathedral of Tomorrow. That original trio was made up of Glenn Payne on lead, Bobby Clark on Tenor and Danny Koker on Baritone. Within a year Rex Humbard wanted to expand the trio to a quartet and added George Younce as Bass. In 1969 the Cathedral Quartet launched out on their own. Their acceptance as a professional Gospel group rather than a Church Quartet was very slow. They went through several personnel changes but the combination that really stood out was Glenn on lead, George on Bass, anchoring the group, Kirk Talley singing Tenor and Mark Trammel on the Baritone and playing Bass. with Roger Bennett on the piano the Cathedral Quartet solidified their place in Southern Gospel Music. Kirk Talley would later be replaced by Danny Funderburk and Roger would eventually leave to start a Record company and would be replaced as pianist by Gerald Wolfe (now with Greater Vision)

The Cathedral Quartet had such hits as "I've Just Started Living", "Somebody Touched Me", "Champion Of Love", "I Can See The Hand", "Step Into The Water", "Moving Up To Gloryland", "I Know A Man Who Can" and probably one of their most well known songs "We Shall See Jesus."

The Legacy of the Cathedral Quartet continues on with their last tenor, George's Son-in-law, Ernie Hasse and Signature Sound and the Cathedral's last Baritone singer, Scott Fowler with Legacy Five and Mark Trammel, former Baritone has his own successful Quartet, The Mark Trammel Quartet. Gerald Wolfe now sings with Greater Vision. Glen Payne and George Younce left behind a great heritage and legacy that will continue until their song "We Shall See Jesus" becomes a reality.

By 1982 Garry Jones had taken over as the groups pianist, Ivan Parker at lead and Brian Free at tenor. In 1985 Mike LeFevre joined the group singing baritone and it was this nucleus that would launch Gold City to the forefront of Southern Gospel Music. Gold City would include such greats as Mark Trammel (formerly of the Cathedrals, Jay Parrack (son of Johnny Parrack) and Jonathan Wilburn. The Kingsmen

The Kingsmen Quartet is one of Southern Gospel Music's top groups and has included such legendary names as Jim Hamill, Eldridge Fox, Squire Parsons, Anthony Burger, Mark Trammell, Ed Crawford and Ernie Phillips and Aurthur Rice. The Kingsmen Quartet originally had their start in the 1950's with three brothers, Raymond, Reese and Louis McKinney. Over the next several decades there would be numerous personnel changes but would gain their biggest popularity in the 1970's with Johnny Parrack, Jim Hamill, Eldridge Fox, Ray Dean Reese, Charles Abee, Jim McCauley, John Broome, Leonard Hollifeld. They have enjoyed much success in Gospel Music and are still one of the most popular Southern Gospel Quartets. The name "The Kingsmen" is synonymous with numerous number 1 hits and a whole list of fan awards and accolades. The late great Anthony Burger, probably Southern Gospel's greatest Pianist was voted Southern Gospel's Favorite musician 10 years in a row and was eventually retired from winning the award and the award was renamed the Anthony Burger award in honor of him.
