What makes a teacher great ... not just competent, but really inspiring?
In seventh grade, I transferred to a new school. My homeroom and social studies teacher, Mr. Mein (yes, pronounced "mean") was really tough with us. He filled the chalkboard each day with illegible scribbles and demanded we copy it - disappearing out the back door and returning through the front minutes later to demand if we had finished.
He graded with a thick, red marker, and held our papers up for the class to see the grade. He also asked, over and over "so what?" I later majored in history, earned a Masters in history, and taught history, and his question is the most important one I've encountered.
Nick Mein passed away at a relatively young age, almost a decade ago.
What stories do people tell about their favorite teachers? Do they go back to visit them, and what do they find out when they do?
Here are some stories about favorite teachers, some information about what it means to be a teacher in different parts of the world, and a chance for you to tell the world about a teacher you remember.
How to be a great teacher
(advice)
Teaching is a voyage of discovery. It is a cakewalk. It is a trial and a test of wills.
Teaching is 90% preparation and 10% inspiration, except when it's 10% preparation and 90% perspiration.
What makes a great teacher? The received widsom is an ability to teach the students what they're ready to learn - finding where they are, and getting them to where they need to be.
Teachers can't manage this through preparation, planning, assessment, perfect record keeping, access to information, and diligence alone. They need to have rapport with their students. They need to be a bit over the edge.
Think of your favorite teachers. Weren't they just a but nuts? Mine were. Rusty Swingle of Marin Country Day School had us acting out prepositions - a lesson I remember a quarter century later, and it's not the only lesson of hers I remember.
John Hasslinger at Homestead Elementary in Mill Valley used to throw chalk at us when we let our attention lapse, all part of coaching us - not very gently, either - into way above proficiency reading ability.
I TAed for Prof. Miriam Silverberg in Japanese History at UCLA, and remember surprising and illuminating details of her undergraduate lectures a decade later.
Sure, these were all professionals, well schooled in techniques, yadda yadda. The key was they loved their jobs, and they prepared the way artists and athletes do, out of pure enjoyment. Diligence is fine for a portion of what teachers do. And dotting "i"s and crossing "t"s - sure, important.
But inspiration is what makes teaching really work.
When I taught, I had some difficulty with students who really didn't want to be in school, had few tools for dealing with being in school, and resisted most attempts to be schooled. I had "taught" for two years before at a private school, the same grade level and subject.
But that wasn't teaching.
I only began to teach after figuring out what my new students needed, what they could handle, and how to get them from point A to point B.
And it came down to teaching procedures - empty of content at first. Then, slowly, as they mastered the motions of being students, I gave them content.
What I made sure they had was (1) clear objectives, (2) appropriate skills, and (3) multiple opportunities to demonstrate competence.
If there's any such thing as a formula for success in teaching, I'll nominate this one.

Study after study shows the single most important factor determining the quality of the education a child receives is the quality of his teacher.

I run a website where a lot of kids hang out and talk about school and all sorts of things. Something that is a recurring theme there is how some teachers are about as creative as a stuck record when it comes to lesson planning. Many others have complained about their teachers having the manners of a rabid boar. Since this seems to be quite a problem for these young people, I have decided to ask them what they think makes a good teacher, and compile the results together in this guide, which will hopefully prevent teachers who read it from becoming another heated discussion on my site. When APA President Robert J. Sternberg, PhD, was in elementary school, his teachers took one look at his low IQ score and lowered their expectations. The result was a self-fulfilling prophecy--a cycle of low achievement that didn't stop until a fourth-grade teacher named Mrs. Alexa decided he could do better. Edward Ayers is a great teacher. His students think so, and so do his colleagues. They call his lectures "spellbinding" and praise him for getting undergraduates excited about research. Even Mr. Ayers, when pressed, acknowledges an "almost insane commitment to teaching." [article continues at linked site]

- Starr Points - My Favorite Teacher
- My favorite teacher was scary and mean -- but only in the eyes of those who had never been in her classroom. Those of us who were her students encouraged the rumors and bolstered our reputations for bravery, secure in the knowledge that she would protect and defend us with every ounce of her being, because we were "her students." What kind of teacher inspires such trust? The best kind! (follow link for full story)
- The "Favorite Teacher" Credential
- As my friend told me the story of a great teacher, he broke down with emotion. That teacher had kept him after school. His parents had questioned whether he was being kept after to be punished. No, it wasn't a punishment. It was a teacher giving of her after school time to coach her English learners in skills of English pronunciation and grammar. He credited this teacher with his success in life. (follow link for full story)
