Raindrops On Roses... A Song About Things That Make Us Happy

No need to wait for the dog to bite or the bee to sting, you can lift your spirits at any time by remembering your favorite things! Yes, The Sound of Music and its sweet songs have over the years attracted criticism for being too saccharine, but consider that this musical is loved by countless people around the world almost 50 years after Julie Andrews first broke into song on that mountain. The Sound of Music and its songs, including My Favorite Things, have an enduring appeal.

In any case, what is wrong with some sweetness sometimes? After all, life can be pretty sour and so can people around us. We can't all have the cheerful optimism and eternal faith of the screen version of Maria von Trapp, but the simplest of ideas can also be the wisest. Notice the little things that make you happy in life. Focus on the positive.

In the song My Favorite Things Maria sings of those little things that make her smile and bring her comfort. Discover them here.

A Few of My Favorite Things (Song)

Sung by 6 Year Old Carina

When it came to finding someone to sing My Favorite Things to us, 6 year old Carina seemed like the perfect choice! You can just see her playing one of the von Trapp children on the stage... Talented singer and dancer Carina has her own YouTube channel and is now 8. I'd be surprised if we don't hear more from this young lady in the future...

Fresh roses are one of the most loved of all flowers with their enchanting scent and delicate petals. While cut flowers make a lovely gift, I'm with Maria von Trapp on this one -- I like my roses growing and jewelled with raindrops.

We all (give or take a grump) love kittens, from their whiskers all the way to the tips of their tails! Who could be sad with a kitten beside them? Not me, that's for sure!

Bright copper kettles

Kitchen - Cherished Memories by suburbanscenes

We don't see many copper kettles these days, which is a pity as they add such a pretty touch of warmth to a kitchen. Sure, we have time-saving gadgets galore, but sometimes that old-fashioned charm of fine-crafted kitchenware wins the day over modern wizardry.

By the way, this artist-photographer creates the most amazing artworks. Click on his link (suburbanscenes) to see his collection.

You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to...

To me, a Brit, these are woollen mittens with a double L. Anything else looks odd to me. Of course, if you are in the US, our way looks strange. But however you spell it, there's nothing quite like a pair of warm woolen mittens to keep your fingers toasty warm on a cold winter's day.

In these days of emails and instant messaging, I sometimes feel the joy of receiving a handwritten letter or a mysterious string-tied parcel all wrapped up in brown paper has been lost.

Of course, we can still wrap gifts in enchanting paper packages with a little effort and know-how. Some people make a true art-form out of gift wrapping!

Ever spent time with a pony? If not, go visit one. They all have different personalities. Some ponies I've met are like dogs and will happily race you or come running to greet you. If the owner doesn't mind, take a carrot, apple or even a mint!

Mmmm, I'm feeling hungry even thinking about apple strudel (apfelstrudel). That sweet and fragrant apple all wrapped up in crisp pastry... Somehow, though, it does seem to taste better eaten in a mountain restaurant or in a warm Austrian city cafe with steamed up windows and pots of hot coffee.

Fly Away Home is a moving story of a girl, Amy, who takes care of orphaned goose eggs. On hatching, the goslings see her as their mother. Which presents a problem, since it is the responsibility of their mother to help them fly south. Amy and her father must find a way to take them on an amazing journey across the skies.

Girl in White Dress by suzyscarborough

This image of a young woman in her white dress with blue sash holding her cat amid butterflies reminds me of the film Bright Star. The love of poet John Keats, Fanny, fills a room with butterflies -- representing first the ecstasy and then the despair of love. Her cat, Topper, is more interested in stalking butterflies than in affairs of the heart.
