My Favorite Things -- Song from The Sound of Music
Ranked #5,350 in Entertainment, #60,180 overall
Raindrops On Roses... A Song About Things That Make Us Happy
No need to wait for the dog to bite or the bee to sting, you can lift your spirits at any time by remembering your favorite things! Yes, The Sound of Music and its sweet songs have over the years attracted criticism for being too saccharine, but consider that this musical is loved by countless people around the world almost 50 years after Julie Andrews first broke into song on that mountain. The Sound of Music and its songs, including My Favorite Things, have an enduring appeal.
In any case, what is wrong with some sweetness sometimes? After all, life can be pretty sour and so can people around us. We can't all have the cheerful optimism and eternal faith of the screen version of Maria von Trapp, but the simplest of ideas can also be the wisest. Notice the little things that make you happy in life. Focus on the positive.
In the song My Favorite Things Maria sings of those little things that make her smile and bring her comfort. Discover them here.

A Few of My Favorite Things (Song)
Sung by 6 Year Old Carina
When it came to finding someone to sing My Favorite Things to us, 6 year old Carina seemed like the perfect choice! You can just see her playing one of the von Trapp children on the stage... Talented singer and dancer Carina has her own YouTube channel and is now 8. I'd be surprised if we don't hear more from this young lady in the future...
Raindrops on roses
Fresh roses
The perfect rose...
And whiskers on kittens
We all (give or take a grump) love kittens
Are you smitten with kittens?
Bright copper kettles

Add warmth to your kitchen with copper
And warm woolen mittens
You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to...
To me, a Brit, these are woollen mittens with a double L. Anything else looks odd to me. Of course, if you are in the US, our way looks strange. But however you spell it, there's nothing quite like a pair of warm woolen mittens
Warm -- and fun -- woollen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
In these days of emails and instant messaging, I sometimes feel the joy of receiving a handwritten letter or a mysterious string-tied parcel all wrapped up in brown paper has been lost.
Of course, we can still wrap gifts in enchanting paper packages
Creative and elegant gift wrapping
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored ponies

Ever spent time with a pony? If not, go visit one. They all have different personalities. Some ponies
Fall in love with a pony
And crisp apple strudels
Mmmm, I'm feeling hungry even thinking about apple strudel (apfelstrudel). That sweet and fragrant apple all wrapped up in crisp pastry... Somehow, though, it does seem to taste better eaten in a mountain restaurant or in a warm Austrian city cafe with steamed up windows and pots of hot coffee.
If you want to make your own apple strudel here are a few recipes:
- Traditional Viennese Apple Strudel - Altwiener Apfelstrudel
- Easy Apple Strudel
- Apple Strudel (UK: metric and imperial)
Delicious apple dessert from Austria
Doorbells and sleighbells

Sleigh Bells Christmas/Holiday Card by lauralippay
Do sleighbells make you think of Christmas? They do me. I wonder if the horses mind all that jingling?
Ring a beautiful doorbell
And Schnitzel with noodles
OK, I admit it, I've never tried Schnitzel with noodles (Schnitzel mit Nudeln). If you want to give it a go, here are some recipes:
Traditional European-style Schnitzel
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
Fly Away Home
Fly south with the geese

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes

Looking for a white dress with blue sash?
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Snow... brrrr! It's cold and it melts.
Snowflake jewelry
Find a sparkling snowflake that doesn't melt...
Silver white winters
Magical winter days
That melt into springs
Joyful spring flowers

- Really fun lens! Would you believe I sang this very song in a competition once. That was a long, long time ago, but the response to the song was overwhelming. I love the attitude of the song.

About my Avatar: When I first joined Squidoo I used a photo of a smiling green pear that I had made myself. Over time the pear and WordCustard have become so linked that it would be hard to change it. So you will see a pear somewhere on most of my pages. Here in my bio I'm using an awesome avatar created just for me by the talented graphic designer and fellow Squidoo writer arncyn.
