Fresh roses are one of the most loved of all flowers with their enchanting scent and delicate petals. While cut flowers make a lovely gift, I'm with Maria von Trapp on this one -- I like my roses growing and jewelled with raindrops.

We don't see many copper kettles these days, which is a pity as they add such a pretty touch of warmth to a kitchen. Sure, we have time-saving gadgets galore, but sometimes that old-fashioned charm of fine-crafted kitchenware wins the day over modern wizardry.

To me, a Brit, these are woollen mittens with a double L. Anything else looks odd to me. Of course, if you are in the US, our way looks strange. But however you spell it, there's nothing quite like a pair of warm woolen mittens to keep your fingers toasty warm on a cold winter's day.

In these days of emails and instant messaging, I sometimes feel the joy of receiving a handwritten letter or a mysterious string-tied parcel all wrapped up in brown paper has been lost.

Of course, we can still wrap gifts in enchanting paper packages with a little effort and know-how. Some people make a true art-form out of gift wrapping!

Ever spent time with a pony? If not, go visit one. They all have different personalities. Some ponies I've met are like dogs and will happily race you or come running to greet you. If the owner doesn't mind, take a carrot, apple or even a mint!

Mmmm, I'm feeling hungry even thinking about apple strudel (apfelstrudel). That sweet and fragrant apple all wrapped up in crisp pastry... Somehow, though, it does seem to taste better eaten in a mountain restaurant or in a warm Austrian city cafe with steamed up windows and pots of hot coffee.
