I Love These Flowering Bushes In The Spring And Fall

There is nothing more that I like to do than watching my backyard bushes bloom.
It does my heart and spirit a lot of good to see life coming back to those trees every spring.

Thanks Mother Nature for putting so much joy in my life by giving me the lilacs, the forsythias, the burning bushes, the bleeding hearts and many more.

Planting Lilac Bushes For Springtime Scent And Color

In general, the best time for planting lilacs is in the fall or spring. In zones like ours, which can have extremely harsh winters, I personally think it's best to wait until the spring. That way you can be sure they have plenty of time to adjust before winter arrives. It also pays to watch your local nurseries. In my area, nurseries always seem to have the best selections of lilac shrubs in the spring, so one can only assume that spring would be the optimal time to plant them.

Romantic Bleeding Hearts

I Have A Few Bleeding Hearts In My Backyard

Bleeding heart, (Dicentra spectabilis), is a shade-loving perennial flower, reminiscent of cool, woodland paths and old-fashioned gardens. Although the bleeding heart flower, with its heart-shaped bloom and tiny hanging protrusion, is available in both white and pink varieties, pink bleeding hearts are the most familiar. As long as bleeding heart is planted in a cool, shady area and gets enough moisture, the plant is nearly care-free. However, an occasional pruning will keep the bleeding heart plant looking its best.

My Beloved Forsythia

One of the earliest signs that spring has arrived, is when the Forsythia bursts into a profusion of yellow blossoms spreading from the ground to the tip of each graceful, cascading branch.

Burning Bush

Burning BushThe main reason I love the Burning Bush is for its spectacular crimson color in the fall.
I can't say that I am crazy about it in the summer though.
To me, it's really a fall bush.

Last year, I finally bought 2 Burning Bushes and I hope that this second fall of having them
in my backyard will be even bigger and better looking.

What Are Your Favorite Bushes For Your Backyard?

Just had to come and take a look at your bushes... I don't know what the yellow is called, but our next door neighbor has one and more than a few lilacs... you can definitely tell that spring has arrived!

Love the lilac, honeysuckle, laurel and rose bushes. My favorites! Angel blessing!

I love the backyard bushes and my favorite of all is the Lilac Bush. The color and the aroma are amazing. I think your page of favorite backyard bushes is a great place to start the Spring gardening projects. You have many backyard bushes I love but haven't thought about in awhile. Mixing a few you have here would be a great way to add color and floral aroma therapy to any yard.

Stunning bushes! I've always loved forsythia.

I want forsythia because my favorite color is yellow.

I would have to say the lilac bush is my favorite, along with my yellow rose bush.

Old Fashioned Lilacs and Roses, Tree Peonies, Mock Orange, and Viburnum come to mind first, but there are others... My witch hazel is currently blooming for the first time. I love Forsythia but they were very invasive here and I had to remove them.

My thumb is not particularly green, but my croton just grows and grows! I also can't keep my split leaf philodendren from growing too much - it's as tall as the house!

I like Forsythia. You are right, it heralds in Spring and is always a cheerful sight. But I'd love to try growing some of these other colorful shrubs.

I just followed your links to find out the best time to transplant Lilac bushes. Answer: Springtime and OCTOBER. Thank you for posting this link. I've two colors to transplant. (A white .. triple blossom and an almost raspberry colored lilac bush.) These bushes hardly ever send out shoots but this year they did. I am going to have a lot of lilacs in the back 40 next year! Thanks again.

I love the burning bush. Squid Angel Blessed.

I love Mexican Heather. It blooms all spring and summer here. It dies off in the late fall. All I have to do is cut it off at the ground level and next spring it blooms back even larger. My city is known for its azalea bushes. They're pretty too.

I really like Forsythias, they are so bright and because they flower early, they mark the arrival of Spring.

A while ago my sister sent me a little plaque that read, "Burning Bush or Still Small Voice, speak Lord, I'm Listening" for my new apartment. I found it remarkable that there was a burning bush right outside my front window. I sure hope to have my own yard again one day to play favorite bushes and other plants.

Very nice lens, you have beautiful plants, love viewing garden lens.

Great lens! The burning bushes look awesome! I wonder how they'd do in my area. I've been missing having nandinas, myself. A neighbor at the end of the block has some and every time I drive by, I look at them longingly....
  • Heatherseesthelight May 4, 2011 @ 6:31 pm | delete
These photos are gorgeous! Now I remember why I love spring so much. Growing up we had a lilac bush in the backyard. Whenever I smell that scent, it just brings me back to childhood. Thanks for the great lens! http://www.squidoo.com/brilliant-outdoors
