Book Reviews

I have listed a few of my 4 year old son's favorite books of which I too am very fond. I hope you enjoy these books as much as my son and I do. Yours truly, Mike.

The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson, Illustrated by Axel Scheffler

This book is one of my favorites. It is written in rhyme and follows the adventures of a snail who rides around the world on the back of a whale. It culminates with the tiny snail saving the life of the giant whale. A great story with beautiful illustrations and a good message. It is a book I do not mind reading over and over again to my son.

Where's the Dragon by Jason Hook, Illustrated by Richard Hook

The author tells a story that captivates young minds. The book is written so a child as young as my son can follow the story, but a child a little older could better grasp the meaning of some of the misunderstandings caused by the grandfather who is hard of hearing. The book is textured and has a game to count all the dragons that are placed throughout the book. This is a book that a child can read over the years and find new things at different ages.

The Mitten by Jan Brett

Based on a Ukrainian Folktale, this book is very cute. A boy loses a pure white mitten in the snow. It soon becomes the home for animals of increasing size who are trying to keep warm. My son loves the animals. I love the humorous idea of the story.

Minerva Louise and the Red Truck by Janet Morgan Stoeke

This book is simple, clever and funny. I have read it to my son a million times and I still get a good chuckle and he laughs like crazy. Minerva Louise is a chicken who has a different take on the world. She sees everyday objects from her own perspective as she sneaks a ride around town in the red pick up truck.

Squirt Swims with the Stars by Michael Stephens

I love this book because I wrote it for my son. I will leave the review up to you. You can get a free copy of the downloadable ebook version at the following website:

Review of Squirt Swims with the Stars

Squirt Swims with the Stars
Michael Stephens
Privately Published
No ISBN, $7.99 www.squirtthewhale.com

Squirt Swims with the Stars is the first in a forthcoming series of children's picturebooks based on the friendly character of Squirt the whale. Available as a downloadable Windows program that can read aloud the story or a softcover print edition, Squirt Swims with the Stars follows a young whale's quest to get closer to the shining stars overhead. He meets a wide array of ocean friends, and finally his brother Tommy takes him to a place where starfish abound - swimming among them is, in its own way, just like swimming amid the lofty heavens. "Sometimes when you are always looking for the one thing that is out of reach, you miss the beautiful things that are right in front of you." The charming illustrations have a relaxing, deep blue color theme, making Squirt Swims with the Stars ideal for sharing with young people right before naptime or bedtime.
