Lighthouses in and around Lubec, Maine that We Visited

I love lighthouses. In the Summer of 2005, my husband, my daughter and I packed up our van and traveled 21 hours to Lubec, Maine. Lubec is the "Easternmost point in the United States". We stayed in a beautiful cabin overlooking the Lubec Channel Light (or Sparkplug) and down the road from the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. While there, we visited West Quoddy daily and we fell in love with it. We also took a whalewatching tour, in which we saw more lighthouses than whales, including another favorite of ours, the East Quoddy Head Lighthouse (or known locally as the Harbour Head Lighthouse). All of the lighthouses on this lens are ones that we saw in person during our trip. The "polaroid" and "flickr" images are pictures we took ourselves.

DID YOU KNOW?

The West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is one of only two U.S. lighthouses with red-and-white bands.

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

Lubec, Maine, U.S.A.

Thomas Jefferson signed the order in 1806 authorizing construction of a lighthouse at West Quoddy. The tower was finished in 1808, and guided ships through the Quoddy Narrows, between the U.S. and Canada, until 1858 when it was replaced with the current tower and keeper's house.

The distinctive red and white bands make this light picturesque and a popular photographic choice for calendars and commercials. The light is located in West Quoddy Head State Park, as far east as you can drive in the U.S.

DID YOU KNOW?

The East Quoddy Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed
lighthouses in the world.

East Quoddy Head Lighthouse

Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada

Locally known as Head Harbour Light, the East Quoddy Lighthouse stands on the eastern tip of Campobello Island, overlooking the treacherous waters of the Bay Of Fundy. Although now automated, it once housed the Light Keeper and his family. The lighthouse and adjacent buildings sit on a small outcropping of rocks which is accessible by foot for a very short span of time at low tide. You have approximately 1.5 hours to make the crossing to the lighthouse and get back before the tide starts coming in. Once the tide is in you can be stranded for the 8 hour duration of the tide. There are many signs explaining the dangers of crossing over to the lighthouse. There are metal staircases which aid you in making the crossing but many of the rocks are very slippery.

Lubec Channel Light or "Sparkplug"

We stayed in a cabin overlooking good ol' "Sparkplug"

The Lubec Channel Light, or "Sparkplug", established in 1890, is one of three surviving "sparkplug" style cast-iron lighthouses in Maine. The 53 foot tower stands guard in the middle of Lubec Channel between Lubec and Campobello Island. It was automated in 1939. Both this light and the Mulholland Light on Campobello Island can be seen from the F.D. Roosevelt Memorial International Bridge which connects these two communities.

In 2006, the lighthouse was made available to a suitable new steward under the guidelines of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. There were no applicants, so in July 2007 it was auctioned to Gary Zaremba for a high bid of $46,000.

Mulholland Point Lighthouse

Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada

We enjoyed the view this lighthouse provided us in the morning from the deck of a small cafe across the Lubec Channel in downtown Lubec. Built in 1885, Mulholland Point Lighthouse served as a guide for the many small coasters, passenger ships, and freighters traversing the narrow Lubec Channel en route to or from the United States or Canadian ports on Grand Manan.

Although the lighthouse is not open to the public, visitors are free to walk around the structure and to enjoy the picnic site next to it. From the picnic area at Mulholland Point are views of the FDR Memorial Bridge, Lubec, Maine, the Channel Lighthouse, and the islands and waters of Johnson's Bay. Often, harbor seals can be seen swimming just offshore in the Lubec Narrows.

Cherry Islet Lighthouse

A relatively unknown lighthouse on the Southern tip of Indian Island. Can be seen from the Deer/Campobello island ferry that runs only in summer. Replaced by a navigation light on a concrete pole. Outbuildings were demolished in 1999-2000. Automated. In 2000 the concrete cylindrical light was re-named as the "Cherry Island Directional Light".
