Hovawart

German Dog Breed

The Hovawart originated in Germany. Hovawart means "Estate Dog" as is the breed's original purpose in the early 13th century. Many early stories of the breed boast of noble acts towards their masters, especially children.

Today, the Hovawart, make a very good family dog. Their temperament is loving and loyal. They are still a working dog and require activity and positive training. The breed is very intelligent and independent. Keep in mind they are not working for you but with you.

The Hovawart males are 25-27 inches and can reach a weight of 55-90 pounds. The females are 23-25 inches with a weight range of 55-90 pounds. The color description is black, black and gold, and gold.

During the Second World War the Hovawart neared extinction.Thankfully German dog breeders and enthusiasts have promoted the breed and they are now becoming popular in other countries.

Uromastyx

AKA spiny-tailed Lizard

The name Uromastyx is derived from the Ancient Greek word oura meaning tail and mastigo meaning whip or scourge.

The name Uromastyx is derived from the Ancient Greek word oura meaning tail and mastigo meaning whip or scourge. This spiky guy spends most of his time basking in the sun. Their size ranges have been reported anywhere from 14 - 36 inches.

The Uri's tail is not only very cool but is also the main source of defense. If threatened, the Uri will whip its muscular spikes at a potential predator.

Primarily the uromastyx inhabit North Africa and the Middle East. They have been sold in captivity although poor knowledge and lack of care have rendered a very low survival rate. This species should only be kept as a pet by an experienced and educated owner.

The Domestic Cat

AKA (at my home) King and Queens of the roost

By far cats, in my opinion, are the most diverse pet. Many cat owners only own them for their hunting capabilities. Farm owners, for instance, will keep many cats on thier land to keep down vermin and rodent population.

In my home the cat, or should I say cats times three, are anything but vermin catchers. They are pillow sleeping, lap cuddlers who wake us up at 4am when they decide to bounce off walls and wrestle between our feet.

Kitties are a very independent species. As far as maintenance they do not need much space or no late night walking. Although at the same time they can be very high maintenance. My cats get very vocal if I forget to fill up the food bowl. They also let me know they were not pleased when I switched to weight management food.

Cats definitely have very diverse and unique personalities. I have never met two cats exactly alike. This is only one reason why the cat is my favorite pet! I think they are puurfect!
