My Favourite Art Shops - Resources for Artists

Ranked #3,123 in Arts & Design, #42,620 overall

Which is your favourite art shop?

As more and more sales move online, it's crucial that all artists continue to patronise and support our favourite 'bricks and mortar' art shops in our towns and cities. These are where we can find the specialist art materials which can be impossible to find online.

This site contains:
(1) reviews of favourite art shops
(2) photographs of what they look inside
(3) details of how to find them.

If you have a favourite art shop, why not do a review on your blog, load your photos of it into a Flickr set and also the Flickr favourite art shop group and send me the links. If you've done a good job of the review it will be included here.

This lens relates and supports a group on Flickr where people are showing the interiors of their favourite art shops.

In April 2010, this lens was awarded a purple star

Why it's important to support our favourite art shops

I'm finding that more and more art shops that I've used in the past are not stocking things they used to and/or are becoming more focused on cheaper goods and the student market or are clearing shelves for 'craft' goods.

Lots of shops I visit on my travels increasingly seem to stock what I would refer to as 'lowest common denominator' stock. I guess the online suppliers of art materials are hitting them hard. However I do wonder why more don't choose to compete in the specialist art materials market as it's always struck me that it's the specialist suppliers who do good business. Why would I go down the road for standard stock when I can buy it cheaper on the Internet?

I do know I'm finding it increasingly difficult to visit my usual art suppliers and get everything I want.

On the other hand I'm also finding that the dedicated art shops and stores are continuing to stock their very good range of specialist stock.

Plus of course they so very often have extremely helpful staff who can provide lots of valuable advice.

DON'T use their expertise and then go and shop online. Be fair - you're paying for the availability and the expertise in the price you pay in the shop.

Making A Mark Reviews

a consumer's guide to quality and value in art books, art supplies and services to artists

Read reviews about art books, art supplies and other products and services used by artists. My aim is to try and identify good quality and good value.

Making A Mark Reviews highlights:
- book reviews (art instruction and art history)
- reviews of art media, art materials and art equipment
- reviews of places where you buy (art shops, online art suppliers and art bookshops)
- reviews of other products or services used by artists
- summaries of good quality and relevant reviews by other practising artists

Making a Mark: Art shops in London
Yesterday I had a brief but enjoyable visit to L.Cornelissen & Son in Great Russell Street. This is the sort of shop which would make most artists think they'd died and gone to heaven!
Art Materials Shops in London -- Best London Art Materials Shops
If you're looking for art materials or art supplies in London, you've got quite a few choices of shops. This is a list of my favorites.

Cornelissen's prices are competitive, if not always the cheapest, but if you're looking for a specific art material or something less commonplace, it's the place I'd go.

Green & Stone of Chelsea - reviews

259 Kings Road, Chelsea, London SW3 5EL

This shop is well worth an expedition to visit. Some artists even travel to London and head straight to Green & Stone of Chelsea.

Green & Stone can be found towards the western end of the Kings Road. I'm guessing it's about a 10-15 minute walk from Sloane Square Underground Station. 'How to find us' on their website provides a good location map and directions on their website.

Dealers in Fine Art Materials and Drawing supplies since 1927 - for the serious artist. Green & Stone are independent suppliers who contsantly strive to offer the Finest Artist's Materials available today, including, Artist's Oil Colours by Jacques Blockx, Michael Harding, Sennelier and Winsor and Newton. Watercolour Paints by Schminke and Winsor and Newton. Acrylic Paints by Golden and Liquitex.

At present Green & Stone do not offer the facilities to buy online but do offer an excellent Mail Order service and can send most items to most destinations. Browse through the online catalogues, then contact by email, post or phone, with your requirements. They will check to see if the item(s) are in stock then contact you to arrange payment and delivery.

Historical Notes:
1) The current address of the shop - 259 Kings Road - was previously run as a shop for the Womens Suffragette Movement!
2) The shop has a display of old watercolour sets in a glass case (see photos below)

Making a Mark: Art shops in London - Green & Stone
Last week I visited Green & Stone in Chelsea and this is the second of my reviews of art shops in London. They were kind enough to let me photograph inside the shop so this is something of a photo-essay as well!

I'd definitely recommend this as a fine art materials shop you must visit if you come to London. It has the same approach and quality as Cornellisen but this shop is much bigger and has more stock. It might be a little out of the way but the range and quality of the stock is extremely good - just beware of the other temptations caused by walking down the Kings Road and keep your wallet firmly in your pocket until you've visited Green & Stone first!
Felicity's Philosophies and Other Curiosities: London views and shops
Green & Stone always remains the same, I just love going in there. It's as if you step back in time and into a time when art was important. I've never found it to be stuffy or unfriendly as some say, just the opposite.

Making a Mark reviews......: Art shop review: Magasin Sennelier, Paris
A traditional shop on the banks of the Seine (same side as the Musee d'Orsay and across the river from The Louvre) which has been around for over 120 years and is likely to be around for a long time to come. I don't think you'll find a bargain but you will see the complete range of some products which are difficult to see elsewhere.

But back to old favorite Parisien art shop, Magasin Sennelier on 3, Quai Voltaire 75007. By the way they've been around since 1887, which means the Impressionists probably got their gear there. But why is it when I show up, the place is always closed!!!

I enjoyed the virtual trip to the London Art shops and I wish I could go to Paris too.. I love to visit art shops and to investigate their stocks. But as you say the good shops become fewer and fewer. Art shops have a difficult time to compete against big wholesalers and online shops and on top the rent for space in the cities gets higher and higher. But I think real art shops will not die because artists need to see, touch and try materials.
