How to Save Money and Go Green by Switching to an Internet Fax

It's easier than you think to set up an internet fax number!

These days there is a big push for businesses to start thinking about "going Green". When you hear someone talking about a company becoming environmentally friendly, they are usually referring to large corporations spending huge sums of money to retool their production facilities or switch their energy supply to a renewable source. What most people don't think about is how they could make their own small business, no matter the size, more environmentally friendly and save money at the same time.

Although the first fax-like machines have been around since 1861 (the Pantelegraph), it looks like they aren't going to be decommissioned any time soon in the business world. Whether it is sending a quote to a client, receiving tax returns from the accountant, or sending back signed documents to a lawyer, everyone with a small business or home office knows that a fax machine is a must for day-to-day operations.

The problem comes from all the hardware that needs to be bought, spent toner cartridges that need to be replaced and end up in a landfill, and all that paper that will eventually get either filed or thrown in the trash because it didn't really need to be printed in the first place. Luckily, just like regular-old snail-mail, sending and receiving faxes has now evolved and is readily available as a mature, environmentally-friendly digital service that, unlike most green movements, can actually save you money!

There are several established fax to email providers that can now offer you a dedicated local or toll-free fax number which allows you to send and receive faxes just as you would email. You don't even need to change your business cards, simply forward your existing fax line to your new number. When you want to send a fax, you attach the document to your email message and send it to the provider's email address, which then takes the attachment and sends it to the receiving fax machine. When you are sent a fax, you receive an email with the fax as an attachment which you can then either digitally archive or print at your own discretion (thus saving paper, toner, and energy).

Sending and receiving faxes by email has many advantages over traditional faxes for small businesses, home offices, consultants on the road, and even for personal use. You retain all the same functionality of a normal fax, plus get to enjoy the mobility, freedom, and cost savings of email. Of course, you also get to tell your clients you are doing a small part to help preserve the environment!
