Being a responsible adult can put a serious dent into one's comic book budget, or in my case, completely obliterates it. So the promise of free and easily accessible comics is too good to pass up. Let me introduce you to the world of Web Comics.

The good Web Comics tend to be more intelligent and more thoughtful than the drugstore variety. There is also a much greater range of genres in Web Comics, as opposed to the spandex clad one trick pony served out by the major comic publishers.

I'll try to steer you clear of the duds and give you a basic working knowledge of Web Comics in this Lens.

A Glossary of Web Comic and Related Terms

Doujinshi: Manga or Comic created by fans (i.e. Megaman comics). A copyright nightmare often ignored by the original creator(s) because it is flattering and usually harmless profit-wise.
Example: http://ppg.snafu-comics.com/?strip_id=1

Furry: Anthromorphic characters, think Mickey Mouse or the Thundercats. Animals as people, the genre has a fanatical fandom and gets ribbing from the other guys but a good story is a good story - fur or no fur.

Manga: Japanese for comic book. Manga are targeted at all age groups and cover a wide range of genres. Western comics which are typically based around superhero themes.

Manga is traditionally read back to front and right to left, it takes getting used to but becomes second nature after a bit.

L33t: Leet or Elite, based on the ascii rantings of caffeine powered online gamers. Numbers and punctuation marks are often used to replace letters. "W00t! 1 pwned u! 1M uber L33t!" Also annoying when overdone, you have my permission to smack offenders in the head.

Sprite: Not a fizzy drink. Sprites are blocky, low resolution pictures often associated with Nintendo and such. Sprite Comics are made by cutting and pasting these sprites into backgrounds and adding voice balloons.

Sprite Comics are often the refuge of the Art Impaired endowed with the Funny.
