Ever since then I've been afraid to fly, not the kind of fear that keeps me from flying but the kind that makes traveling on planes almost unbearable. I've tried alcohol to calm me down, valium, you name it.
But, in the end the fear was always there. That is until I started doing some research on ,my own about panic attacks and phobias. I learned that there are many things we can do besides self-medicating to overcome our irrational phobias and fears.
Here's what I learned. What you put in your body has a great effect on your state of mind and your mood. Getting wired up on coffee or drinking a twelve pack of beer on Friday night can go along way towards screwing up your mood and bringing on phobia.
And that means any fear, not just fear of airplanes, it could be fear of public speaking, or fear of crowded places. I have since reformed my intake of intoxicants down to a much more manageable level and I have noticed a huge difference.

I also learned that eating fruits and vegetables has a massive effect on your body. I should have listened to my Mom when I was a kid...eat your spinach, dudes and dudettes.Once I started piling on the veggies I noticed a distinct drop in my fear of airplanes and flying. Again, this stuff can be applied to any panicky moments.
Exercise is so good for your body, but did you also know that it's amazing for your brain? Yep. By exercising your body you increase blood flow to your brain making it more effective and much stabler.
I would recommend a good cardio plan, there's plenty of info on the net about starting a program. One word of friendly advice, start slow and don't get discouraged, it takes a little time to work your way up.
When I fly on a plane today I also have a method for dealing with panic when it comes on, it works everytime at taking me out of a state of panic.
