Fear of Cooking
Ranked #13,592 in Food & Cooking, #239,092 overall
I was afraid to cook.
Ever known someone with a fear of cooking? I don't know of anyone who was as afraid to cook as I was when I was younger. I thought that if I cooked something it would turn out terrible, so I was paralyzed and afraid to try at all. This was very hard to overcome and produced many embarrassing and painful situations in my life.
Even now I'm somewhat afraid to cook. A lot of it has to do with the fear of criticism. I don't want to displease my potential hungry diners so I have done the worst thing of all - which is to not serve anything at all. Cooking has been a huge issue for me over the years.
I know there are other people out there with a fear of cooking - so I'm writing this lens for them, to hopefully give them ideas on how to get beyond this issue, to learn to cook effectively and happily.

Fear of cooking?
...learn to walk before trying to run.

If you're afraid of cooking, you're not ready for a dinner party and invited guests - especially if they include your mother-in-law. I still remember the first time I cooked for my mother-in-law - I was terrified! I ended up cooking white rice with vegetables that came in a freezer bag, already cut, spiced, and ready to warm up. A great cook I was not.
Years later I'd approach the task considerably differently. First, I'd use my rice steamer which I love, love, love for an easy dinner. I'd use brown rice since that's what I prefer. I'd use fresh veggies including potatoes and put them in the top part of the steamer. I'd serve a sumptuous dinner this way, quick and easy without the stress.
The stress is the worst part of dinner parties.
What I wanted to say, however, is that if you fear cooking then learn first to cook for yourself. Figure out what you like to eat and become proficient at producing several types of meals for yourself. Once you're wholly satisfied with your ability to cook for yourself, you may be ready to quadruple the recipe and invite some friends over to break bread with you.

If you're afraid to cook...
...get a job in a restaurant where you're forced to cook.

I wish I had gone to work in a restaurant (as a cook) thirty years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain. I finally did get a restaurant job later in life, and that helped me become more comfortable with food and cooking. I had to be trained to do everything - a natural cook I was not! But I managed just fine and learned to love cooking - in the restaurant. That of course carried over into my home life.

The great learning to cook debate
...is it easy or hard to learn to cook?
When you learned to cook did you find it easy or difficult?

Difficult for me...
Showpup says:
I'm no Martha Steward (does she really do the cooking?) but I've made a few things that were good. My goal was to one day come up with a dish that everyone would ask me to bring for potluck family gatherings. Finally got one.
LindaJM says:
Cooking for myself is easy. Cooking for others has been scary! As of late I've been able to prepare foods to take to potlucks without any fear. I think I've pretty much overcome the worst of my fear of cooking.
Easy for me...
charlino says:
I'm lucky I overcame my fear of cooking at an early age.
WriterJanis says:
I found it to be fun.
OhMe says:
The cooking part was easy. It was the cleaning up that I hated and still do.
Gerald_McConway says:
I found it easy and love it. I honestly don't think my girlfriend has ever cooked me dinner as I am in the kitchen before she ever arrives drumming something up.
GramaBarb says:
I love to cook from scratch - from the garden to the plate. Brought up that way so it is easy for me.
Suggestion: watch a lot of cooking videos

- Although I've had my share of cooking fears and apprehensions over the years, growing up with both parents working, and living on a farm with two younger brothers gave me little time to think, or develop a fear cooking.

- I'm glad you wrote this and I'm sure there are many who are too. Honestly, I have always cooked and never gave a thought as to what it would be like to actually have a fear of cooking.

- As a professional chef the concept of having a fear of cooking was alien to me. I enjoyed your honesty in this lens and can appreciate the fear of having dissatisfied diners. I fully agree with the idea of cooking dishes that please yourself and hope you continue to cook. If I could offer any advice it would be that if your dish is a savoury item than don't be so dependant on a recipe, you will be supprised how much you can tweak.

Learn to cook
...with confidence!
My fear of cooking was numbing...
...and I'm so glad I have it under control now.
Sorry to say, my mom didn't spend much time teaching me to cook. She had her own problems at the time and was doing good just to show up in the kitchen and do her thing.
My early cooking experiences included making tossed green salads for dinner, and making sandwiches for myself for lunch. She also taught me to make a cake - from a cake mix. There were a few hamburger helper experiences as well. But that didn't prepare me for adulthood, and when I went out into the world to try to fit in, I was terrified of cooking!
I eventually proved to myself that I could cook and no longer worry about it as much as I used to. That feeling of fearing cooking is sometimes still there - but it doesn't interfere with my life anymore.
