Dental fears versus bad teeth - get a check-up now!

Oral hygiene is far more important than we think and visiting your dentist for regular check ups is paramount to our ongoing good health, even if we are scared to do so. However those fears begun, nobody wants to be walking around in later life without any teeth!

As a child I grew up in Britain and we used to have dental visits in our school once a year, as I recall. It may be a costly business to have a dental check up within your schooling, but I feel as though it should never have changed. Sadly, many years ago they stopped this great service and it is for the usual reasons - the government did not want to spend the money on this service any more. Never having lived in Canada until 2006 I have yet to ask anyone if this was the same here.

My fears of going to the dentist started when I was young. My mother did not have enough faith in the dental visits made to our school and would periodically take myself and my siblings to a local dentist. That is where the fear began. Each visit to the local dentist used to mean two or three fillings for all of us. On top of that we were never given any treatment to aid the pain.

Trust your dentist

Children's dentistMy mother worried that we weren't taking care of our teeth and thought that we obviously needed the fillings. Why else would be given unnecessary dental work?

It took a few years, and several fillings later before it was realised by my mother that the school dentist would say that we had no problems, and upon visiting our local dentist shortly after we would be required to have more dental work.

In those days the government would give x amount to dentists, so I am told for every filling they had to do. The National Health Service meant that our mother did not need to pay for dental treatment before the age of leaving school. This was a good thing, but not when dentists in Britain were paid by the amount of work done. This being said, I am quite sure that not all dentists were out to fill every child's head with fillings, but it was certainly open to abuse to the few bad dentists out there.

The sad thing is that it made me paranoid to go to the dentist in later life, but over the years I have overcome this fear and now gladly visit my local dentist for a dental exam now.

I now floss daily, get regular check ups and was recently had to see my local orthodontist to be fitted with a bite plate due to grinding my teeth at night. Bite plates are not easy to get used to, but I'd much prefer not to wear my teeth away with all the grinding I do at night. My teeth are in great shape for my age, despite the amount of fillings I had as a kid. If you're frightened of going to a dentist, think again! Without their help you could loose your teeth!

I should go to the dentist more often. I avoid it like the plague, but I know it makes sense to go.

The drill really makes me squirm and as a child had me running for the exit!

The worst part of visiting the dentist is the sound of the power tools. They should be made with silencers and it wouldn't be nearly as bad.

I quite agree. I had nightmares as a kid about those sounds!

A regular visit to the dentist can help your teeth stay healthy in the same way as a regular check on your other bones can save you from the risk of femur fracture.
