Would You Rather Die Than Make A Speech?
Do you cringe at the thought of making a speech? A lot of people do! In fact, I remember somebody once telling me that the fear of making a speech is greater than the fear of dying. Now this might be a bit of a strech, but not much of one I'd wager.I know I was terrifyied of giving speeches when I was younger. I barely got through a couple in college without passing out. And, it's funny, I'm a very outgoing, normal, well adjusted person, it's just that I have an irrational fear of being the absolute center of attention.
I realized as I got older that my fear of making a speech was silly and I would have to do something about it because, let's face it, everyone has to make speeches occasionally, I don't care who you are. And rather than having it be a horrifying event I wanted to make it easy and comfortable.
I learned that what was happening to me when I gave speeches was that I was having panic attacks.
I got the classic symptoms, brain fog, irrational fear, feelings of floating outside myself, feeling like a was going to die or go crazy, excessive sweating, etc, etc.

Ok, I thought to myself, I'm having panic attacks. What's my next move? How do I solve my problem. I did some digging on the net and I learned a lot of cool stuff.I've always been a big fan of exercise but I admit that I often let my routine slip. You absolutely cannot do that if you have panic attacks. All that nervous energy stored up in your nervous system is just waiting to jump out if you don't burn it off. This simple trick can work wonders, so stick to it. I can also admit that I like McDonald's and I like beer and lots of other things that are not good for my body.
What I didnt' realize is that these things are bad for the brain and will induce panic attacks in people that are susceptable, like me. See, poor nutrition and toxins tax your neurotransmitter pool and make it much more likely that panic attack will occur.
Conversely, a healthy diet, emphasizing fruits and vegetables will totally ramp up your neurotransmitters. Products like 5 htp and valerian are also supplements that I take to keep my mood level and my panic mode in the off position. Even if you pay attention to all these factors, like diet and nutrition it's very possible that you have a learned fear when it comes to fear of making a speech. That's what I had.
So, it wasn't as easy as cleaning up my diet and exercising for me, I needed additional help.
And you know what, I persevered and I found it. Basically I found a program for panic attacks that is not specially for giving speeches but for people suffering from related phobias....and it worked like a charm.
I don't understand how it works completely, but the program is called Panic Away, and it teaches a technique in which you learn how to move activity from your midbrain (emotional) to your forebrain (logical).
Again, I'm no scientist. But, it works like's no body's business, that's all I care about, I know if it worked for me it can work for others. Definitely check it out, and fear of making a speech will be just a bad memory for the rest of your life.
