Celebrating February Holidays is a great way to make the time go faster and make the month tons more fun. Shake off those winter blues with these fun, bizarre and unique holidays.

February 1st

National Freedom Day

type=textMajor Richard Robert Wright Sr., created National Freedom Day believing that there should be a day for all Americans to celebrate their freedom. Being a former slave, this was very important to Major Wright.

In 1948, President Harry Truman signed the bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day. The date was chosen because February 1st 1865 was the day President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery.

Today is a great day to celebrate your freedom!

Groundhog Day

February 2nd

type=textOn Groundhog day, Phil the groundhog emerges from his burrow. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, we'll have an early spring. Learn more at Groundhog.org the official site of The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

The Day The Music Died

February 3rd

type=textFebruary 3rd 1959 in Clear Lake, Iowa a small plane crashed into a field, killing all 4 people on board. Three Rock and Roll musicians, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), all perished in the crash along with the pilot.

The musicians were on tour together and Holly had decided to charter a plane to the next stop on the tour instead of riding in the cold tour bus. Richardson was ill with the flu and asked one of Holly's band members, Waylon Jennings, if he could take his spot on the plane. Jennings agreed to give up his seat to Richardson.

Singer Ritchie Valens had never flown on a small plane before and asked Buddy Holly's other bandmate if he would give up his seat. Tommy Allsup told Valens he'd "flip him for it". Valens won the coin toss.

In 1971, Don McLean wrote American Pie, a song about the day of that 1959 plane crash. In it were the words, The Day The Music Died. Which is what February 3rd, is now known.

President's Day

February 21st

type=text

Presidents Day is a pretty complicated one. It's a federal holiday, I can tell ya that much. It seems to have originated with a power struggle between celebrating President Lincoln and President Washingtons birthdays, although different states have different definitions and some people believe it's a day to celebrate all the United States Presidents. And theres a bunch of hullabaloo about the actual date...So yeah...
But hey, it's also the day when all the local car dealerships have those nifty "Presidents Day" sales!

George Washington's Birthday

type=textGeorge Washington, father of our country, and his birthday is pretty much as complicated as "Presidents Day". Here's a quote I found on Wiki that sums it up best: "Washington was born on February 11, 1731, based on the Julian calendar then in use in the British Colonies. Though a common misconception, President's Day is NOT a holiday to honor the birthdate of Washington. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in the English Colonies (1752), he opted to begin observing his birthdate anniversary on the equivalent date of February 22, 1732."
