- I just started a lens on the homeless. We, me and my friends, bring them into our homes. We are building a bunk house to house more. Over the last 5 years we have brought in men, women and families...well over 200. We live in the Puget Sound region in Washington State.
Read my lens, I think you'll be encouraged.

- Hi Leanne - I wanted to stop back by for two reasons. Since I visited your lens and read your story last November, I have made a commitment of buying food each week when I shop for my family and dropping it by my local food bank. It puts a pinch on our grocery budget, but doesn't compare to the hardship that others in dire need face. It was sad to see how low the shelves get in the non holiday seasons. We've learned to give food consistently throughout the year. Thanks.
The second reason for my visit is to drop off an Angel Blessing for you today. :)

- This is a very inspirational story and one that touches the right notes within to get people to do something. I have spent years visiting with the homeless in Canberra by meeting them in the city where they often hang out. Some I have counseled to try to help them turn their lives around, these were mainly young people who just left home for almost no reason and who turned to crime to support themselves. So I understand your take on this subject and thank you for doing what you do and for sharing this with us. I am lensrolling it to child abuse because its often how people become homeless in the first place. In fact I will feature it there. Congrats on the LOTD and thanks for the blessing on My spirituality lens

- You did a great job with this lens!! I help out locally at my church for the Room At The Inn and am coordinator of the women and children's night there. I love to converse with them and try to understand what they need to get them off the streets. We help many people achieve that goal, and some are just adjusted to living on the streets and would rather not have any 'rules' in life. This is a great way to do what we are 'suppose ' to be doing in life, and I think you have done a great job portraying that in this lens.

- Outstanding lens, Leanne! I'm proud of you! Congratulations, too, on lens of the day!
Strangely enough, I decided to look at this lens to compare your recipe of homemade bread to mine...but found something else entirely - and the title still fits the subject of your lens. Amazing and creative!
I can't see the poll on how we will feed the homeless; I see 33 people have responded, though. It sometimes happens to my polls but I don't know why.
My plan, this coming Christmas, will be to donate to a food bank. We don't have homeless people here, as in living on the streets, but we do have homes in which 14-17 people live so a few extra groceries doesn't hurt.
On one of my days off, I intend to make a few batches of cookies and distribute to the kids I encounter during that day; after all, every day I walk down the street, I have at least 25 to 30 children, often in groups playing on the street, and everyone has to say "hi" to me and each child expects me to say "hello." Saying hi once does not suffice; if there are ten children, I say hi ten times. I'm sure these children would love a few homemade cookies...and, who knows? I may even invite them over for pizza or hot dogs another time.
Thanks, Leanne. I always wanted to reach out to the children around me more because I see a few children suffering at the hands of their parents, in one way or another; parents smoke and can't afford to feed their children, parents gamble for long hours into the night while their children are not being supervised and healthy groceries go back on the grocery shelves when there isn't enough money for healthy foods and junk food, to name a few. In responding to your lens, I know how I can help even a few of these children, on some occasions.

- It's nice to want to make the lives of others better. Does giving the homeless a holiday meal really improve their lot or does it mostly just give the somewhat better off a reason to feel warm and fuzzy inside about themselves? What about the other 11 months of the year?
The homeless don't need or want further dependence on busybody dogooders for their welfare, sentenced to forever be their social inferiors. What they really they need and want are the tools and skills to provide for themselves and a chance to do so so they can be considered by you to be your equals.
Please don't stop helping the homeless at merely giving them some unwanted off-brand cans of food that have been sitting around in your pantry for years. Please help your help your fellow human, homeless or otherwise, to not only survive but thrive throughout the whole year!

LeanneChesser Nov 13, 2009 @ 7:31 am | delete
- I hear your plea for a deeper level of giving and empowering. I agree. At the same time, I think that any giving is good. The organizations that I refer to here all work in a holistic and long-term manner, providing tools and skills for people who are homeless. But they depend on others who give food and other items. If people can contribute in that way, I think it's fantastic. Even just giving food at holiday time helps those organizations continue the work they do and it does make a difference in the lives of people who are homeless. They're very appreciative of people who help.
I also hear your passion about the equality of all humans. Again, I absolutely and wholeheartedly agree. That's something I believe strongly in and I would never imply otherwise.

- I don't know a lot - - but if you or someone you know is in need of a turkey, food, or even gifts during the holidays (especially Christmas), you can contact your local food bank, a local church (often they put together hampers, or they could put you in touch with someone who could help) or a Christmas Bureau type-organization. We have a Christmas Bureau in Edmonton and they provide tons of families with hampers of various kinds at Christmas. They're also in need of supplies.
Hope that helps!

- Thanks for this important reminder. Sometimes we can get so caught up with all the trimmings that we lose sight of what really matters.

- I don't see myself as a hero! I'm just a person who cares about the homeless and others in need and I've done a few things to help - - not nearly as much as I'd like! I sure do hope, though, that I've made a difference in someone's life. Thanks for your kind comments!

- Very special lens, each year in the past we have donated food that is distributed to those in need in our local area...think there will be even more need this year, so very appropriate lens.

- Wow - this lens is a blessing. No wonder it's getting so many blessings. You've given lots of options here and I like the way you took the time to explain why it's so important for you. Yes, I think interacting with the homeless face to face is so necessary and you've given me a nudge.

- My dad was homeless briefly, well about 6 months, oddly by choice. I wrote about it on my lens about him The Story of a Vietnam Veteran so I really appreciate this lens and like it. It is so good that you do what you do to help. Thank you!

- Wonderful lens! I'm glad Crystal posted this in the forums. I've never actually volunteered at a food bank (or "soup kitchen" I guess is another term), but, every year, the Jazzercise fitness center I belong to takes up a big collection of food to donate. This year, more than ever, the Food Banks here in Flagstaff need our help, with supplies running significantly lower than demand. Your lens is a terrific reminder that all of us who can should pitch in SOMEhow.
